I couldn't find roof rack that didn't require drilling into the roof the truck so i made one and want to share the details so you can too. More photos of the truck and other projects, / overlandunderbudget
I use this rack to mount my 6 round lights, the perimeter amber lights and my extra storage case. basically just anything you want to toss up there.
Mounting feet are Yakima q towers. Be sure to search craigslist and ebay, you can find them cheap! yakima.com/products/q-towers-...
The cross bars I used are 37.5inch long, 1x2 inchs and drilled and tapped for 1/4 tread bolts. www.tnutz.com/product/ex-1020...
The electrical connectors www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07...
7inch round lights, price went up from $40 to $60! www.amazon.com/Driving-Lights...
Amber side lights price went down to $22 for 2! www.amazon.com/Nilight-15020F...
As always thanks for watching and subscribing to the channel!

The amber lighting is so much easier on the eyes than the white. I have a pair of Rigid Ignite floods on each side and they are a little intense for scene lights, but work great for night trail runs.

Well done! Your vids are awesome. Lighting wire routing is always a challenge. Have you ever considered entering from the third brake light? I was thinking about drilling the cover out just because it can be easily replaced if I wanted to sell. Keep up the work!

Another awesome video! One source for those Thule bars would be from Audi roof rack bars on craigslist. I bought four sets for under $100. It seems no one ever installs them and they appear almost identical to the aero bars

Nice job on the rack. I love seeing clever DIY solutions for things like this. A couple of questions, though. Brands like Frontrunner and Prinsu have machined slots in the crossbars so they can pop in special tie-downs or bolts into the channels. Have you made any provisions for that? Otherwise, it looks like you'd have to partially unbolt the rack to get anything into those channels. My other question concerns load... How much weight do you think your setup can hold? Products like Prinsu bolt in to the roof structure and can support some substantial weight. Of course, Prinsu-type products are not easily removable like your rack. Cheers!

Would the Yakima bars still attach like this on an Xtracab? I love this roof rack and like that it is a no drill!
@lizardraven
@lizardraven 2 жыл бұрын
For a first gen Xtracab you can use four Yakima Q towers with the "Q Stretch Kit" which allows the rear towers and bar to sit farther back on the roof past the door. They don't mount to the pop out window, but two Q clips will mount to each door.

I'm in the same boat. First thought is the q towers on the front legs, and then maybe a fixed mount in the back? I'd also like to avoid drilling into the roof.

Don’t the hold downs on your roof rack let more water in between the door and the cab? If you want to keep the rack for the life of the truck, why not install the rack in permanently.
@OverlandUnderBudget
@OverlandUnderBudget 3 жыл бұрын
Nope! i haven't had any issues with water, and i dont think yakima could sell the racks if they let water in. Not having it drilled and permanently attached lets me stay flexible with the truck. I like being able to remove everything if i want and sometimes i do! I also like the way the weight is distributed with the yakima feet. Anyways those are just my reasons, drilling and permanent mounting could be the right option for someone else!
