LOVE the idea of using coroplast as the top- lightweight- let's in light during the day and waterproof... So much more lightweight then other ideas I've seen out there- well done!

Cool beans for sure ! I am no sower ... sowing cloth is some thing I will have to farm out to someone who can sow .. my claim shell front hinged roof top is to provide standing room under it .. front storage for clothing & other daily use items .. but the rear is for standing room ... my roof top is extremely light weight & will house my solar panel mounted to aluminum angle frame work .. & have a heavy duty aluminum piano hinge for front ... yours looks great !

Great job! The use of coroplast for a rooftop tent has been on my mind for a long time. Thinking of making one without tent material and just coroplast with a 3/4 ply wood base. Best diy tent on youtube man!

Can you make an update video- a new video of your review after use. What worked, what helped, what went wrong or you would do differently. I’ve seen some diy rtt stuff but this was the first hard shell clam style I saw. I’m a contractor that works with metal and thinkin about giving it a go. But I would really appreciate if you did a follow up with your experiences using this badass thing you created. Thanks for your time!

My primary critique of your tent is the lack of ventilation. Without some form of ventilation, a modern tent will become a very humid environment. For those inspired by this video, I advise including SOME form of side windows that you can close from both inside and outside the tent. better yet put the screen on a zippered panel so you can open it up and access the outer rain flap while still inside the tent so you can seal up the tent during unexpected popup showers. As a secondary recommendation, get some of those industrial plastic floor tiles that allow liquids to drain through them. This will allow air to circulate under your bed pad in whatever form it takes which will greatly reduce the ability of mold and mildew to form on the mattress Finally, while using tape for the edge seal is o.k. for a short term test of a prototype, it is a poor long term solution. aluminum edging is a much better choice in the end. alternately, you can buy fiberglass cloth and epoxy on amazon which would allow you to seal the top properly and have a much stronger shell.

This is an awesome build. Good job! What kind of rack would you need to put on top of your vehicle to support it?
@nicholask.18745 жыл бұрын
Thanks, the rack I have is an Adarac Aluminum Series truck rack. It mounts to the bed rails of the truck. I think with slight modifications this type of tent could mount to most types of roof racks as long as they could support the weight.

Hey awesome work!! I am building myself a rooftent actually and I am in trouble with the gas springs, I have no idea of where to place them exactly to open it exactly how I want... And I don't want to make the holes and réalise that it's not well placed... What was your method?
@nicholask.18744 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The hard part was getting an accurate measurement of the strut when it was compressed since I had to compress it with one hand and measure with another. It did take me two attempts so I ended up with additional holes to fill.

Nicholas, Thanks for posting this, it looks great! What did you treat your 1x3's with to make them waterproof, and did you use plywood for the base? Thanks in advance for any advice you can give! Greig

Hey Greig, the best is 3/4" plywood and all of the wood sections are painted with several coats of outdoor deck paint which seems to be pretty weatherproof and durable.
