I'm really impressed with you Izzy, John and Matthias you guys show such professionalism. You never get rude or mad with each other and you just try to improve on and make simple or just give another example. The fact that you all don't drag each other through the mud shows that you are true professional and I for one really appreciate all of you giving over your time and knowledge to help ones like me out and inspire something special in me thanks!

I like the straight forward design concept. It's something that someone can build from your plans and is not overly engineered and complicated

That's really clever. It looked like it couldn't possibly work until you described the spring in there, which made it make sense. Nice job man.

The cool thing about the sliding router depth is that if you created a follower that was attached to the router carriage, and spring loaded it against your template, you could cut the inverse. This would be epic for things like creating a case for a complex object. Anyway, cool stuff - excited to see where it goes!

Excellent Concept Izzy. Especially like the ability to do 1 to 1. Even though I'm a Harley guy, a pull lever (similar in operation to brake or clutch) for depth of cut might be better than a throttle grip. The user may unintentionally move a throttle grip when manipulating the arm while following a template. Really looking forward to your next step in the build. Thanks for sharing.

Looks very good. I like the lever slide control idea at the handle better. It seems the throttle type would vary the depth. Maybe build in a depth lock operate lever or throttle to activate slide to preset depth and it locks into position. Activate again it unlocks and retracts. I can't wait to see finished in action.

I go for some type of trigger or pull as opposed to a twist grip. Maintaining a twist while working a pattern would be far more challenging then a simple grip. Can't wait to see the ideas you are planning for this.

My 2 cents: Instead of the moto throttle idea, what about a gear-shift / joystick type handle with a knob on top? It could move on the xyz axis so the depth of cut could vary on the fly, allowing 3d carving. Kudos Izzy. Always stimulating to see your ideas.

Great idea !… The 1:2 reduction always seemed a little bit far fetched for one or two milling projects (ie. one tenon, one mortise only) The 1:1 pattern does it for me ! Haven't you thought of putting two handles (one on each side or the router) so you could handle the whole contraption from behind, ie. facing the project you're milling. I feel it would be handier (but then again I didn't have your project in hand !). The bike handle is a nice concept. You could use the same idea to start the route itself. Anyway thanks for sharing and KEEP US INFORMED ! We're followers ! ;))

Looks promising. Make sure that you test it for any potential "dead spots", for lack of a better term. A "dead spot" would be a region on the cutting surface that the rotating blade cannot reach because it is constrained to follow curves of a specific radius. I doubt that there are any, but it might be helpful to prove to yourself that there are none before you build the production model.
@NOLAMarathon201010 жыл бұрын
A possible way to test it for "dead spots", or otherwise explore the cutting range of the device... Put a felt-tipped pen into the chuck of the router. (Don't power up the router.) Mount a piece of poster board where your cutting surface would normally be. Using the router-mounted pen, draw on the poster board until you've fully defined the range of the device.

For your X-movement, perhaps watch how CNC machines are built how they do the Z-axis. 'Motorcycle' style movement sounds very cool, a chain with 2 gears to the spindle might do the job, but a CNC 'the normal way' might be as easy for you to built. (without the steppermotors and all the needed computershit at first in this case) Of course Izzy doesn't like it normal :)

Not being a MC rider I cant follow what your talking about,... I was thinking more of a "L" shaped or brake handle like depth of cut control with a pin/bolt that slides in the slideing in plunge part of router houseing squeeze the handle ,..the router plunges into wood,.. release the handle and a return spring pulls router and bit out/back wood heres another idea to prevent tear out or roughness a shim or a oversized patten follower so you hog off the majority of wood in the first pass then make clean final pass on the area where wood is being cut to put a backer board or scrap wood to prevent tearout on box joints or dovetails My mind sees several possablitys for this

@izzyswan10 жыл бұрын
I have seen it before. its a cool concept. but using a box inside another box for stabilizing the router offers a couple issues and the shear size is just way to big to do what I want with this system.
@Tenfdy10 жыл бұрын
izzy swan ok thanks. just thought it is a similar idea. looking forward for the finished design and demonstration :)
@izzyswan10 жыл бұрын
he does use a spring on a hinge to float the inside box if i remember right. I am doing something similar to help carry the articulating arm. So in that way It is similar.
@Tenfdy10 жыл бұрын
izzy swan yes the spring and the follower in line with the router and a 1to1 rate. and i just saw he also made a foot padle for the router axial movement but i think the idea with the hand operated could be better. also his is a little to big.
