DIY Ruffle square neck bow tie open back dress | Making my birthday dress | Sewing tutorial

Hi everyone,
Welcome or welcome back to my channel. My name is Jess and I love doing DIY, making clothes in a "simply but pretty" way.
It's my birthday month. And I want to make something special for myself. So I chose a few designs that I really love for the tutorials this month. I hope you will enjoy all of them.
In today's video, I'm going to share with you how I made my birthday dress. It's a dress with ruffle shoulder strap, square neck and bow tie open back. It's not only pretty but also a bit sexy. And it's the perfect combination for the dress that I want to wear on my birthday. I hope you like it and try it out.
To make this DIY, please check out my basic information below:
- Sewing machine: Brother Auto Tension
- Material: 2.5m of cotton fabric. The width of the fabric is 130cm
- My body measurements: 80-66-92cm. I'm 165cm tall and usually wear Small size.

Great tutorial but the shoulder strap length measurements are off. :( I cut and sewed all the parts for one strap before realizing the instructions don't factor in the length that is hidden in the side straps & is used to attach the strap to the front center part of the bodice.

Happy Birthday to you Jess! Thank you for sharing a tutorial on this beautiful dress. However I think the measurement you gave in your voice-over instruction is not accurate 🤔 the strap given in your video is 40cm which I followed turned out to be too short😢😢😢 May I ask what measurement did you have in your video (it seems that your video showed a longer measurement on the strap with ruffles) I may now need to redo my dress as it (length of dress that needs to be attached to the main bodice) does not fit😭😭😭 Pls advise n help 🙏

Thank you! I did cut it a bit longer in the beginning to avoid the case if it's too short. However, I end up cutting it shorter than I need. And the ending length is 40cm. Because I don't want the front top is too low and show my breast. So the length of the shoulder strap at the front is just around 15-16cm. And the back is around 24-25cm. My tip for this part that when adding the other end of the shoulder strap to the tie at the back. You should try them on your body to see if they're long enough for you or not.

Happy Birthday to you Jess! 💕 First of all thank you for sharing a tutorial on this beautiful dress with us 🥰 However I wish to clarify on the correct measurement of the shoulder strap length as your voice over instructions said the length used for the dress in your size is 40cm & I followed exactly (cuz my body measurement is the same as yours) but sadly it turned out to be too short 😭 may I ask what length did you make for the dress in your video? I believe I saw the measurement of the length is definitely longer than 40cm… maybe 55cm or 60cm? 🤔 pls help to clarify on this part as now I may have to redo my shoulder strap with ruffles cuz it doesn’t fit😢🙏

Hi Catherine, I checked again this video and found out the problem. I forget to add 20cm into the length of the shoulder strap. 20cm is the length of the center part. So the final length of the shoulder strap should be 60cm which is the length from above the breast over the shoulder to the back + the length of the center part. I'm so sorry for this mistake and the problem you got when trying to make this dress. But also thank you for your comment to help me re-check it again.

I dont get it. I'm working on the shoulder strap. You say yours is 40 cm, so I measured like you did in the video, from the back to the top of the bodice. But when you say "keep 20cm open" it's clear from your ruler that your strap is closer to 60 cm. This is terribly confusing. I already cut the pieces and way pretty close to done with the straps ☹

I'm truly sorry. I just checked it back, you will need to add 20cm (the length of the center part) into the shoulder strap. I missed it when editing.

To make the ruffle, you need to make a loose seam first. To make the loose seam, you need to check the thread range on your sewing machine. Move it to the maximum thread range. Thread range is the space between 2 needles. Use the normal straight stitching
