Here is my cut list for a 36in flag: You need a total of seven 21.75in boards and six 36in boards for the stripes. You also need four 19in boards for the back supports (this cut list will give you enough to add a 5th support if you want) You need to purchase five 1in x 2in x 8ft boards.... -Board 1: 36in, 36in, 21.75in (2.25in remaining excess) -Board 2: 36in, 36in, 21.75in (2.25in remaining excess) -Board 3: 36in, 36in, 21.75in (2.25in remaining excess) -Board 4: 21.75in, 21.75in, 21.75in, 21.75in (9in remaining excess) -Board 5: 19in, 19in, 19in, 19in (20in remaining excess, I used it to create a 5th back support board resulting in only 1in excess) ***If you need to make a union, a 1in x 12in x 4ft board ripped to 10.5in will yield enough for 3 unions measuring 10.5in x 14.25in each.

Just an off-beat true story about a flag for a veteran: I walked into a cafe in Norman, Ok, with my wife one morning a year or so back. As soon as I entered, there was a lady at a table there who asked me if I was a Veteran. I told her that I was. She immediately handed me an American flag that she had put together with beads and had made herself. I explained to her that I was not a Vietnam veteran, but I was a Vietnam era veteran and that others would likely be eating there on that day who were much more deserving of her gift than I was. She insisted that I take the flag and said it did not matter to her in the least, as she wanted me to have it for serving my country in the military. I was hesitant to accept, because of all the work she had put into it and because I did feel there were others more in need of such an honor, but I did take it and as soon as I got home I found a place right in my living room to show it off and to admire the love she had put into doing such for a vet she didn't even know. There are many good people in this world who respect, honor and love the people who serve our nation and support and defend it. This woman was one, for sure and to this day, I keep that flag right where i can look it proudly and think kindly of that woman who gave it to me. God bless America and our troops, as well as the citizens like this woman who care so much in giving a piece of their own heart to our service men and women.

Over the last two weeks I have been dealing with Jordan and Tim from That Flag Company. I have to say it has been the best customer service I have experienced. At first they had sent me the wrong size union but with an email sent late on a sunday night they offered an apology and a fast replacement. After thinking about what i was going to do with the new union I decided I wanted to add a logo from the church I go to. They were very quick to accommodate my request for the added work. The new union with the logo arrived today and it is awesome! I will highly recommend That Flag Company to anyone that is looking to build their own flag!!!

How about a follow-up video in making the union to this flag? I was also thinking, why not make a two-sided flag that has long stakes sandwiched between them so it can be pushed into the ground at a garden area or such? You could easily do this with the support 1"X2" pices you made to hold the wood together if they were longer and maybe made to a point at the end of them. Nice video, but all the troll crap always ruins the best effort of people to post such and allow comments because of it. I have burned wood, but I also like the effect of home made stains made from stainless steel and vinegar used on old pallet boards or even fence posts/pickets that I got for a fence repair at Lowe's. Nice job and thanks.

@thatflagcompany7105
@thatflagcompany7105 5 жыл бұрын
Hey a1930ford, there are multiple ways to make the union yourself. We started by making a template in Microsoft Office and tracing it onto stencil paper from Hobby Lobby. We then used a knife to cut the stars out of the stencil and could use that stencil to trace the stars onto the union. After the stars are traced, you can use a dremel or a hammer and chisel to engrave them into the union. Hammer and chisel takes more practice to get right but ends up being quicker and better than a Dremel in my opinion. This is the most cost efficient way to make the stars yourself. I have also seen people buy stencils on Amazon but they’re not always proportional for their flag and they’re limited to the one size and style. We will be making a follow up video in the near future covering all of this. However, to make the unions with our level of quality and detail that we offer on our website would cost you thousands of dollars in equipment and multiple tutorial videos. For this reason, we did not go into the details on this video but decided to offer them already completed for $34.95 on THATflagcompany.com in order to provide another option that we wish had been previously available to us when we were starting. I hope this video was useful for you and the follow up response helps give some additional clarity. If you have any questions we can help with, definitely don’t hesitate to ask!

On my third flag. First was an experiment and is hanging in the garage as an example of mistakes. Second one is hanging in my office. On my third I got over confident. went through all the steps and finally flipped it over, marked for the bracing, put glue between the boards, clamped them up while pushing the slightly bent ones back down, put glue on the first bracing, lined it up, pressed down to hold it in place, grabbed the nail gun, and phssssst. The cheap 15yr old nail gun blew a seal. No, I did not throw the nail gun across the room like I wanted to. I put the other bracing in place ran another board across them and set my small generator (40+lbs) on them to hold them in place and walked away. It dawned on me this morning that I had not put anything under the flag so I am afraid to go back to look since it may glued itself to the bench. PMCS your equipment before you start the mission and it may save you and the mission.

Thanks for your videos. Some to the things you pointed out were very helpful. I am retired Army EOD NCO and build book cases, desks, chairs on weekends for family. I watched several videos and had a couple problems when building these myself. I have a hard time getting the wood properly "toasted" I wanted some burnt spots for character but getting the toast color was difficult until I listened to your instructions. Thanks for that. The other issue is staining. I applied two coats while wiping off the excess and letting it dry between coats but cannot seem to get the deep color that you and others seem to accomplish. I used the recommended stain and color. I have used oak, cherry, mahogany, stain for years but never a blue or red. I wipe it on, wait a few minutes, wipe it off, let it dry, and repeat until it is the color that I am looking for. In most of the flag building videos the instructor just applies the stain and moves on to the next step. What is the trick? Do you apply only one coat? Do you wipe off the excess and just not show it? Do you thin out your stain so it soaks in or dries faster? Thanks

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this or even had this same issue, but the 1x2’s I got from Lowe’s were 1/16 (?) shy of 1.5”. So my 10.5” tall union was ultimately about 1/4” taller than the seven short stripes. I would suggest the alternate method of getting a wider board and ripping it to your desired width.
@thatflagcompany7105
@thatflagcompany7105 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Chunky Bones! The 1x2’s should measure .75x1.5”. A lot of people have unintentionally grabbed furring strips from Lowe’s that measure smaller than shown in the video similar to the size you mentioned. Great recommendation on ripping your own stripes for those that are able with a table saw.

Hey J Rendon, I’m glad you liked the union and thanks for entrusting us to build it for you! There are multiple ways to make the union yourself. We will be making a follow up video in the near future addressing all of this.

How do you recommend hanging the 36” Flags? Wire screwed to the back?
@thatflagcompany7105
@thatflagcompany7105 6 жыл бұрын
Something as simple as 18 gauge wire and screws works quite well. You also have the option to buy picture hanging kits or attaching a couple of D-Rings to the back. I find the d-rings to be inconvenient when trying to hang and level though.

They sell stencils for the unions or can make them for you. I'm going to make one of these and buy a dremel for the stars. A helpful addition to the dremel is a little blower that dremel sells that attaches to the end of the tool. It works like a tiny fan blowing away the dust you creat. They sell dermels and the blower attachment at Home Depot.

Great video. I’m making one right now. Fun project. I would like to say that since you originally made this video, Lowes has changed their policy (at least near me) and they will not cut the wood for you. They only cut them to fit in your car. That being said, it’s not a hard to cut and you don’t even need a powered saw. Get a little $10.00 mitre box/saw. You’d be surprised how versatile it is. My old mitre saw motor burned out and I didn’t have the money to buy a new one for a while. It was really useful.

I am also building one for our local sheriff department because we need our first responders and they seem to get neglected around here. The quality of the union I got is great. Made my first flag today. Thanks for the video. Only thing I would improve it with is the measurements...flag at 37" wide...cool. Made with 1x2 furring strips...so this worked fine. The union however presents a problem. 10.5 inches high is good...goes with the material. But the width of the union...needs to be closer to 15 inches...most stencils are 10.5 high by 14.8 wide. So I would make the flag a little wider to balance the look. More like 39 inches. Also...used 5 pipe clamps...worked great. Thanks again guys. Off and running.

Here's an idea for you, create router templates for the unions. Doing the stars with a dremel is incredibly time consuming. I'm not looking to make any money but the stars would reduce your potential margin (time is money). I have been thinking of a way to do it faster and I think a template built out of plywood that you could use to use as a router guide would be great.

I wound up buying the star stencil from Amazon and traced it onto the union I cut as per your dimensions.
