In this video I show how to frame a scale model house. I cut 1 by 4 lumber into wood strips and build a scale version of a 24' by 32' house. I tried to frame the windows and doors just like I would on a real house.

Spyder Lord so we have carpentry and we make a modeled house but we actually start from bottom but I think he doesent know what he is doing super glue is not made for wood wood glue will hold as long as you have clamps to hold it plus your project will look better but we also don't use staples

I love it. One of my favorite things to see is a wood framed house. I love when I spot one and try to go by each day to see it come together. I hate when they start to clad it with the exterior materials so you can't see all the framing. Thank you so much for doing this. For me a framed house is like candy. I just can't get enough of it. Tiny small homes that almost invite you to try and build it are the ones I like most.

I made one of these out of balsa. I even made joists and put down 'subfloor' and framed a second floor AND roofing trusses. Stairs are hard. Mine is a smaller scale so that I could use available sized balsa and only cut to length. Your larger scale model could even be wired up with realistic looking wiring and LED fixtures, not to mention realistic looking HVAC and fake plumbing. Consider me inspired to make my own larger scale and go nuts!

I built my 26'×32' house with vaulted ceilings in the front half an 8' in the back half. This gives a feeling of space but allows for attic space and room for central air. Here are a few tips : Don't buy the cheapest windows they will fail within 5 years. Put some concrete mix under the shower unit for strength. Place washer and dryer along outer wall to vent easier. Drywall yourself , it is not that hard and will save a lot. Always overbuild when you can.
@cdjhyoung
@cdjhyoung 4 жыл бұрын
Jerlin Vinso - You might be right about dry walling yourself in your area, but where I live they bid it by the square foot of surface so cheap, it hardly makes sense to do it yourself, unless of course you enjoy breathing drywall dust.

I learned much about how planes and cars work by building scale models as a kid. I learned about chemistry and physics by building scale models as a teen. I learned how to not stress out and provide wonderful gifts to friends and family by building scale models as an adult. My cherished pass time. I’ve never built a house or a model of one but it might be my next project. Great inspiration.

Quite a few years ago I built a scale model of a handicapped ramp to be used to demonstrate what our ramp ministry did (hoping to get some more volunteers.) It was about 24 inches long and all the pieces were cut to scale for the 4x4s and 2x6s actually use to build a real ramp. I appreciate the effort done here in making a 3D floor plan of their proposed house to they could have a nice visual image. Just because the individual pieces are not to "exact" scale, doesn't make it any less useful for the intended purpose. I really liked the project and maybe I'll build one of my house. I'll have to think about the scale properties of the "nails" from a pin nailer (new toy) and then adjust the sizes of the scale lumber accordingly. If I used 0.5" pin nails to be equal to a 16d construction nail, then the scale would be 7:1 and a "2x4" would be 0.25x0.5, etc. That seems doable and not too different from the dimensions used here. It's just that the house model would have been about 50% larger to be in approximate scale to match the "lumber." Anyway, great project - appreciate the effort.

Thanks James for the comment. You are right..."the house model would have been about 50% larger to be in approximate scale to match the "lumber." I wasn't really worried about the 2 by 6's being perfectly to scale. I just tried to get everything close, as well as making it fit my needs. Thanks for watching!

When I build my scale framing models, I tried medium viscosity CA glue, but I found it's too brittle and fragile. I rebuilt my first wall using tiny dabs of hot melt glue followed by 5/8" 23 gauge pins using a Porter Cable pneumatic pin nailer following the NC Residential Building Code nailing schedule in 602.3(1). Works great. With a good pin nailer, you can easily replicate toe-nailing where applicable. I cut my rafter plumb cuts and bird mouths with a super sharp dozuki Japanese pull saw in a shop-made miter box jig.

Great model. I'm in the process of doing the same thing, but building a model to be assembled by my grandson. will include plans and all parts for construction. Will include a raised floor foundation. It's difficult to make everything to scale. Had to set up a scale chart: 2x4 would be 2/16 x 5/16 and 2x6 would be 2/16 x 7/16, etc.
@woodshop6713
@woodshop6713 5 жыл бұрын
Unless I'm mistaken you stated that 1" = 1'. That would be 1:12 scale. You used 3/4" studs on the outside walls which is the equivalent to 9" studs instead of 6". You also mentioned for the interior walls you were planning your stock to 1/2". That would be 6" studs rather than 4" studs. I only mention this because had the scale wood proportions been accurate your model would have more interior living space and the scale wood dimensions would be spot on. All in all great effort and nice model.
@chaddiy3512
@chaddiy3512 5 жыл бұрын
You are correct about the scale. The reason I did this was if I did the 2 by 6s to scale, they would be to small to glue and nail the whole project together.

I’m hoping to build a 1/12 scale building or 2 for diorama/display use… this is pretty helpful. Just need to figure out the floor-plans for each of them, find a decent standin for drywall that won’t look weird and muster up the follow through to actually do the projects All I know is that I want to use one as a physical interpretation of my dream house, even though it’s unlikely to ever be realized in real life (never say never) and the other as a secondary mainstay in a figure comic series… I think for the sake of display, both should have swivel posts incorporated into the corners of the outer structure so I won’t have to worry about lifting off layers like a roof or a second floor… but I’d prolly want them to be heavy duty and secured to a fairly beefy foundation (beefy relative to 1/12 scale) to minimize drooping and shifting of the contents in each room Still a few years away from really starting anything like this, but it’s fascinating to think of the possibilities all the while

I'm going to do this ! I'm in the process of having my home built, and it will be my own personal floor plan, but drawing it out on paper. I just don't get the feel. I need to see walls to make my imagination come to life,and make changes if I need too. Hard to imagine living in it with just lines drawn on paper. So thanks for the awesome video :-) Oh and you lost me why you planed down your lumber for the interior to 1/2" and not for the exterior. Is it because your model is based on 2x6 exterior and the interior walls are 2x4 ? I guess a person can hand the model over to the actual builder when it's finished,and say "Hey look Wise Guy, this is exxxxactly how much lumber I need..Don't screw me"..HA

@chaddiy3512 7 жыл бұрын

its a 1:12 scale with 2x6 exteriors and 2x4 interiors from what I saw. Ya, looks like he forgot the bottom crippler on the split jacks for his windows. Overall I think his goal was not to provide a framing rendering, but more just put his flat blueprint into a more tangible medium.

You ain't working 12 to 16 hours a day 6 days week...unless you're standing there holding a sign and that don't count for shit. No company will let you get that much overtime every week. You ain't going to build shit. You're probably broke AF and live with your parents playing games 12 to 16 hours a days.

@@chuckd9007 I guess your the little bitch that don't no shit about construction and running with the sun, and yes your wrong, the company I worked for did want me to run those hours. I really have no need to explain this to a simpleton. I am going to guess you never really worked hard in your life. Best wishes to you as a simpleton. Gotta work hard for thing you want.

I know this is an old video, so this question may get lost to the æther, but I saw your channel is still active, so I figured I'd give it a go anyway... When doing the windows @2:10 you said you were trying to build similarly to how you would a real house. If this were a real house, wouldn't you want the jack studs that are under the ends of the header to continue beneath the sill plate (to directly transfer that load down to the ground)? I'm not an engineer or a builder, but was curious since it seems like you were generally trying to stay faithful to true construction methods in this model & in my naive mind, that's what seems like it would be best practice. Anyway, loved this video and my wife and I are inspired to build a similar model of our dream home now. Cheers

Hello, I think you are correct. Those studs should have ran all the way to the bottom. Thanks for pointing that out!

I have seen too many houses where the owner-constructor didn't bothered with plans or models: living rooms where you can't fit nothing, dead spaces, bad circulation patterns. A model is useful with model furniture, to check that dimensions are right.

Would like to know the scale of model. I would think it is close to 1:24. Want to build a diorama for 24 scale diecast models. If I imagine a 24 scale model placed in front of your "house", it seems to be quite close.
