QUICK NOTE: I mentioned the one hand rule for all those new to electricity, or, those unsure about what part of this coil may be safe to touch. Ironically, I used two hands right away. I did this only for cinematic effect - I do not recommend using two hands, ever, unless you are very familiar with your device (like I was). One hand rule at all times, I just did it for effect!

Talking bout your Ebook. The matter we don't see is space it self. Dig into superfluid you'll understand what I mean. How you could possibly know you'd be in a soup of superfluid if you were in it? It act like a vaccuum yet it's not. Starting to connect the dots yet? The speed of light is constant as long as it travel through a constant matter.

I have already begun a design of my smallest Tesla coil I've ever built, I believe Jay has see it, it will be an audio modulated version of this coil here except about 1/4 of the size. It will use an external driver for high power usage but with an integrated driver (Full Bridge for the external and Integrated drivers) that's in the base similar to his. I absolutely love the quality and effort put in to not only your high voltage work to make it amazing in appearance but also the quality of your videos!

Wow that's beautiful! You are a master with acrylic. You've definitely gotten me hooked on brass hardware. Can't wait to try this build. I still have some of those capacitors from the 3 volt Tesla coil project. Thanks for making this video Jay.
@PlasmaChannel
@PlasmaChannel 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Nigel, you're quickly becoming my most reliable commenter! Thanks, I am glad you enjoyed the video. Acrylic can really be a pain to work with sometimes. Even when you're gluing the edges, they can experience "crazing", which is chemically induced cracking. I got lucky and didnt have much of it. You can use the capacitors from the 3 volt coil, however, you'll need many more of them in parallel since the caps from that build are lower capacitance. Try to find the 10nf (0.01uF), 3kv polyproylene caps on mouser. Also, I had occasional sparking between the primary and secondary coil when using it on medium or high power. To solve this, wrap thick plastic between the two coils (try not to scratch the secondary windings when doing so). Cheers!

Thanks M.S. Yeah, I was really pleased with the result. I took my time calculating the resonant frequencies prior to building, and I think it paid off. I wish I designed the secondary/primary spacing a bit more safely though - I occasionally get sparks between the two coils.
@Slowly_Going_Mad
@Slowly_Going_Mad 4 жыл бұрын
@@PlasmaChannel I got to thinking about it the spark gap could be slightly improved with one sharp electrode to reduce breakdown voltage and increase efficiency (i.e. box razor, piece of hacksaw blade.) I would also try to reduce primary inductance a bit and make up for resonance with the cap bank. Nonetheless this is one of the most quality homebrew sets I have ever seen.

I really love the look of this! As to acrylic cracking, I've done a lot of work with acrylic when building my pink and clear guitar, and from that, if you use a stepper drill bit, it will have a much nicer hole, and it won't be so prone to cracking :D (Best to still have a very small pilot, but for bigger holes, it's very nice to have (the drill bit)

Love your grounding. The same concepts can be applied to receive remote power. It's the basis that Tesla was working with when he wanted to charge things remotely. Wide plate for grounding and an antenna on the other end. As a charge seeks to establish equilibrium on the larger plate there is going to be a little back and forth with the coil and remote electric source.

Awesome Jason, a totally love it. Clean lines and awesome output, really have to build this now, and put my spin on it, and luckily i will have spare acrylic after this Wimshurst build is done. not surprised by the ending though, acrylic glue is not really a structural join, more a chemical one. by stepping the acrylic rods and socketing them into the disks then gluing you would have a way more secure structural bond that should handle the load.
@PlasmaChannel
@PlasmaChannel 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Noel, yeah i've been seeing your Winschurt built on IG. I think IG? Anyways, your build is looking great. My only problem with drilling and bolting acrylic together, is it takes too long for me to do properly. If I ever have the time, I’ll make this. I was actually going to build a large one years ago, but couldn’t justify the time and cost. Priorities. Whenever I have worked with acrylic, especially if it’s thin, I would run my drill bits in reverse to prevent splitting. Then I’d take a torch and gently and mildly heat the cut edges to smooth out and remove any micro-fractures that could lead to splitting. Kind of like melting the end of a cut polyester string/rope. Just less melting.

Another way to drill acrylic or any soft material is to take a file and purposefully dull the edges on the drill bit.

another thing. the oscillation is made by the feedback coil. then the 3055 saturate and become conductive to ground the primary coil. I think that the circuit can be change not using the feedback coil at all,... or perhaps in a more complex project can be used as a zero crossing sensor. Once you have a variable oscillator you can experiment the coil behavior,... which would be interesting. Once you have some awesome freqs, you can modulate the amplitude with an amplifier, or perhaps a pwm to make a FM device... yes you can put some sound on the coil. I want to thank you for this channel which is an inspiration.

@@PlasmaChannel Its scaleable, it needs to be in a vacume or you can use mineral oil i learned that a long time ago on a episode of G4 when they submerged a computer in mineral oil to cool it. When Telsa did it in atmosphere he shocked him self and his workers even when he put insulating walls up they still got shocked because the magnetic field cuppled with the electric arc/wave went through the insulation. ive tested this out with a stun gun lol.

Hey Alex, that sounds scary and glad you're okay. Yeah, the one hand rule is really important when dealing with higher and higher power levels. In this video, I mentioned the one hand rule, but, then violated the rule. I only violated it because the overall power on this coil is very low, and, I knew exactly what I was doing. Otherwise....oh boy....anything that is 50 watts and up can really hurt you if it goes across the chest.

How did you tune it: did you o-scoped for resonant freqs or calculate them? If you want to estimate output voltage better you could use sphere gap technique in this case: hang identical grounded sphere above the top terminal one and set distance where gap breaks.
@PlasmaChannel
@PlasmaChannel 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ime, I used JavaTC online. It worked very well, and I tuned designed the coil to be in tune from the start. As for the spark gap method - it's a great one! I actually shot a whole video about it two years back. Unfortunately, with AC electricity, the sphere method is not as accurate, though, it will give a rough estimation. That's how I quoted the 110kv from this coil. I have a second sphere identical to the topload, and the spark jumps about 3.5cm between the two.

That is a really gorgeous build, however I would like to build one with red and yellow acrylic...I am not fond of clear acrylic...sorry, I know that sounds stupid. I would also like to add a mini toroid on top...I have seen 2" diameter Aluminum torpid, that shouldn't mess with the resonance too much, Am I Right, or wrong? I Appreciate your ingenious builds and easy to understand and construct videos.

Hi Mallard. Thanks for the compliments! Strange that you like the colored stuff - I cant stand it! Though...in certain applications...I think it looks cool. As for this little of coil, you'd be amazed how sensitive it is to adding and removing topload capacitance. the sphere had a capacitance of...around 2pF. Adding more capacitance up to about 3.8pF drastically threw off the resonance, and reduced spark output by about half an inch. I DO want to get some small metal toroids though. Would look really cool!

Could you use Lexan (polycarbonate) instead of Plexiglass (acrylic)? It's a lot easier to drill, cut, & machine, and it wouldn't have broken as easily.
