Hope you guys enjoy the episode!! Just a few more details we forgot to mention on the video. This product is made in Brazil, so if you buy it on a different country they sell with different brands names. No, this is not a payed promotion. Yes, they gave us a small discount for showing their brand on the video, but the only reason we used this insulation solution, and the only reason we are talking about it is because we really liked the product, other wise we wouldn't use it. I seem to recall someone saying how this type of insulation requires an Air Gap to be effective, typically 3/4" or 15mm or so. When you place it flush, as you have done, seems to really reduce the effectiveness of this type of insulation. Granted you do have some of an Air Gap built into the ceiling from the corrugation so you might be ok but you may want to look into this before you go further. Maybe install 3/4" (I think 15mm) runners to provide an Air Gap along the top of the Ceiling might really give this Insulation a really good chance to perform well. I believe the difference is like R-Value of 3 with NO Air Gap to like R-Value of 22 or more WITH an Air Gap... Great Project as Always... Cheers...
@OddLifeCrafting
@OddLifeCrafting 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot for the tip Paul. The roof we are not thar worried about as we have a roof and wooden deck on the outside. The walls the corrugation is way bigger and it will have a lot more air. So far has proven to be good (on our weather of course, not too cold not too hot) 👌🏼😊
@ellea3344

Yup, this exactly. It's where furring strips come into play, to provide a gap between the insulation, and the exterior shell (cladding, sheathing, etc.)

I used that product on the ceiling of my motor home and It worked, I didn’t cover it with anything else. On the floor I used 1/2 inch foam board and covered it with pergo. Not installed the way manufacture recommends but I’ve had no problem with either product. I had used the insulation you used on your ceiling on a floor with pergo flooring but you could tell it was under, not as solid as foam board.

I just finished a shipping container build and while I must say it was a good learning experience, I don't think it is a wise choice. Maybe that's not going to be a popular opinion here, but it's the truth none the less. I say this because I believe most people think the build time will be faster because you are already starting with a structure. While it is true you will have the structure to start with, you will be spending a great deal of time to modify that structure to fit your needs. Your are also constrained to the size of the container. Think about this, when you do a container build you still have to frame, insulate, do interior walls, ceiling and flooring. You will also spend a lot of time cutting the container for doors, vents and windows. You will then need to fabricate frames to weld in the doors, windows and vents. That alone takes a lot of time. Wouldn't it have just been faster to make the same frame you have made anyway (for the container build) then just drop the windows and doors in place? You save the time of having to cut and weld a container AND you are not going to have to address the condensation problem as much. Think also about the time you'll be spending fixing rust spots or holes in older containers. And lastly, what has that container been used for over all these years and did any harmful chemicals get spilled into the wood flooring? Think of that when you kick up all the dust while you cut sand and drill it.

That could have gone into the system above the container ceiling. Foil needs a clear space (some say an inch; I think 1/2" is ok) to properly reflect radiation. I'm using 5/8" furring on walls and adding foil-sided closed-cell foam for R-13 (southern coastal climate in USA) with foil facing air gap to vented container siding. Interior walls are getting cement board for fire protection.

Hey guys - I'm doing a shipping container conversion too (Videos being posted shortly, and I'm planning to feature you in the first video) - I wonder if your insulation material is just far too thin for the heat? I'm using 50mm Polyisocyanurate with a vapour barrier on the inside on all walls, floor and ceiling. Polyiso is double the conduction insulation to EPS. So for me it is Container Wall -> Polyiso 50mm -> vapour barrier -> 18mm wood chip board. I'm also not using vapour barrier on the floor because the container floor is wood, so the floor is a great place for moisture to come in and out in a natural way (ie. excess moisture goes out) and with 27mm marine ply floor of the container with insulation on top, it shouldn't cause condensation on the container floor. Radiant heat is a difficult one in a container with steel walls - but I will be cladding my container and that will take all the radiant heat out of the equation. I'm really interested to see how your choice performs because it is a LOT cheaper than the polyiso. What a long message - love your videos, keep it up! (I'll try to email you guys soon)

Thanks a lot for all the information Vince. About featuring us we would be really happy with. About the thickness of the insulation according to the manufacture this product of theirs is mande and tested for this kind of use and they have a huge company using on all their containers. So we decided to try out. But if the concern is the summer. For us at least it won’t be a problem as we will have a wooden structure on the outside to create a shade and keep the sun away from the shipping container plate. But before we build that we will have the opportunity to test without it so we can have a really feedback about it. 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
@OddLifeCrafting
@OddLifeCrafting 6 жыл бұрын
Ohh they also have thicker ones, but according to them it won’t be necessary. 👌🏼😊
@VinceSamios

You have all the extra shade so in summer I don't think you will notice much different - how cold does it get in winter?
@OddLifeCrafting
@OddLifeCrafting 6 жыл бұрын
Usually 13 degrees celsius. A few 8 degrees days (like 5 days a year). Not bad at all. 👌🏼👌🏼
@VinceSamios
@VinceSamios 6 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah, well with the roof you've got on it you will be fine. We get -8C most years, and we've been down to -19C once or twice. In summer at the moment it's around 30C so I need protection on both ends. Winter is the biggest challenge here, but the volume of air in the container is quite small so it shouldn't be too difficult. Do you guys mind if I use a few short clips from your videos to feature you at the end of a video of mine?

Boa sorte, pessoal!

The spray contact adhesive should be applied pretty thinly. You were applying it too thick and thats why it didnt go far. A single can should have been able to cover about 50% of your ceiling pretty easily. One of those products where less is more.
@OddLifeCrafting
@OddLifeCrafting 6 жыл бұрын
You are probably right. But I did a test before and could do it from a bigger distance. It spread all over the place. It was really messy. We might give it a second try on the second part of the ceiling. 👌🏼 thanks a lot for the advice! 😊👌🏼
@MattWeber
@MattWeber 6 жыл бұрын
Odd Life Crafting keep the same distance you were spaying. Just move faster so doesnt have time to build up as thick. You want a verrrry thin layer. Perfect coverage isnt needed. Think of it like the first layer of doing spray paint. Thin coverage the goal. Too thick also means the bond isnt as strong as it takes much longer to set than instructions assume you are applying it.

Hi guys! An interesting series about thermal insulation. I want to warn you that your insulation is not as good as you think. To ensure a comfortable life in the house, its thickness should be about 10 centimeters. Still it can not be heated because polystyrene foam emits poisons. It is better to use sprayed polyurethane foam, or mineral insulators.
@OddLifeCrafting
@OddLifeCrafting 6 жыл бұрын
This kind of EPS according to the manufacture don’t emit poisons (as the product is made for housing porpoises) and it’s also not inflammable. It’s ok with all the Brazilian standards. Oh we also will have wooden strips on the outside of the walls to help creating shade so the sun won’t heat the shipping container walls. 👌🏼
@ellea3344
@ellea3344 6 жыл бұрын
The off-gassing from EPS is way overstated. That insulation is perfectly safe and won't off-gas. You'd have to set it on fire for it to "emit poison".

Odd Life Crafting they are not about the weather. They are about the quality of air you are breathing. These devices take in fresh air every few minutes, and more importantly, they take stale air to the outside. As a side benefit, they help in reducing temperature fluctuations. Moreover, they work better than a vent since they have filters which block the passage of crawling things.

We have the best solution for insulating a RV, Bus, Tiny Home, Van conversion, Yacht, Houseboat, etc.. It's our Eagle ECOrk insulated spray cork, 3mm is about 18 R value, but our product is a thermal barrier, eliminating temperature transference between outside and inside.Totally green, no vapors or voc's, stops condensation, 25 colors, waterproof, hail proof, acoustical insulator, fire retardant, flexible and a few more. It is literally cork particles in a emulsion, sprayed on with a handheld texture sprayer. Facebook @ Eagle Industrial. The video below was shot on a hot August day and at the start of shooting, temperature was 100°F- 37°C at around 9:00am in the morning. The container was at least 110°F-43°C around noon a couple hours after prepping and before spraying. The second thermal imaging was around 1:00pm and the temperature dropped to 78°F-25.5°C. On asphalt roofs and stucco walls we typically get 50°F-10°C drop in temperature, once structure is coated. kzbin.info/www/bejne/npSpqIOXhJiMmpo Michael W St.Dizier CEO EAGLE INDUSTRIAL SERVICES LLC. In our opinion it would work. Yesterday here was 30C and the inside wall were no warm at all. But we also had wind. 34C without wind I guess no meter the kind of insulation the air inside will be warm as you have windows. For us we only have that kind of temperature a few days a year so it’s fine. 👌🏼😊

I was just wondering though, what is the point of having insulation that prevents heat from radiation as this insulation will be inside the walls. Thus the radiant heat from the sun will hit the container exterior and that heat will be transferred then through conduction to the inside? Which means the 2 layers of foil on both sides of the insulation wouldnt do much as they are not in the direct path of the radiant heat. Wouldnt it then be better to have insulation that mainly combats conductive heat transfer in the walls and paint the containers with reflective paint?
@OddLifeCrafting
@OddLifeCrafting 6 жыл бұрын
I do some how agree. But at the same time I believe the aluminum foil is important to create an barrier to help against convection het. As there is a small sir gap in between the plate and the insulation there is alo a lot of convection heat. Of course if it was spray foam this would be necessary as it wouldn’t have any air gap. But as we said before we unfortunately don’t have spray foam available where we live. 😏

I thought about the same. That would solve some problems with condensation. The metal structure of the container would be like the vapour barrier and sit on the inside of the insulation like its supposed to (at least in the climate of colder countries). But... It wont be easy to move the container. Partly because the anchors for loading it are now behind the insulation. And partly because, probably you cant transport it on a regular truck without a dispensation from the road authorities, because its just a bit too wide for the normal regulations.

I am really not an expert, but I am afraid that this solution is not as great as you think. 1) it wont give much insulation, simply too low k value. 2) you will have condensation behind. According to many of my engineer friends the way to keep a structure dry is to make all your effort to shield off the rain etc, and in the end drill a hole in the bottom. Because no matter how hard you try water will always find a way. Its the same with damp air. You tried your best to make it impossible for the damp air to get behind the insulation, but it will happen still. Only very slow, but it will happen. And now you have water trapped between two vapour barrriers; the insulation and the container. That water must be vented out. The solution could perhaps be making some holes in the container metal sheets so moist will vent out. Everybody advises against having two vapour barriers because water will get trapped in between. You have exactly that; the container and the insulation. My friend's kitchen had to be rebuilt because someone installed something impermeable on the walls there, and water got trapped between this structure and the vapor barrier. So mold really thrived between the two. My advice for you is to find a way for keeping an eye on any water behind the insulation. Perhaps you can get some kind of electronic sensor that you can place behind the insulation and read out. If you could do such tests that would be valuable to others too. I hope I am wrong and your solution will prove to be very good. Good luck. Sincerely from Denmark.
@OddLifeCrafting

I was going to ask but the end of your message gave the answer hehehehe you are in Denmark. Were we live is not even close to how cold Denmark is. So far we are doing really well with condensation. And other that that we will have wooden strips on the external wall so we won’t have the sun touching the metal on cold days. We believe it will be fine but 🤞🏼🤞🏼
