Every spark event creates a plasma between the electrodes.This is a very creative, deceptively simple and very inexpensive method to direct current to the gap for stronger spark and better fuel economy. I wish you could slow your igniter down to observe individual spark events.

Also, would this (your implementation shown here) work with a waste spark ignition? I would use a ring terminal at the spark plug end, and the strands of the wire connecting it to the foil could be wrapped between layers of the foil tape - no soldering! Also, why not put a 50V

I do it and its work good on my bike, but I have an issue, 12Vcc system on bike get unstable, maybe will be great ir you can do a test with osciloscope to see differences on voltage, thanks regards

No, not necessary. You can wrap only part of the cable. Maybe the part that close to the spark plug gives better result. To give consistent result, you need to make them same length for all spark plug cables. I mean the aluminium foil/tape length.

you inadvertently built a high voltage capacitor. the silicon on the plug wire has a very high dielectric constant. nothing new here. however, a high voltage capacitor ($0.12 each on aliexpress) before the spark plug (in series tucked in the plug wire boot) will have a stronger effect and is cheaper than the roll of tape. use formula 1/2cv^2 = capacitance for determining approximately what kind of effect you are looking for.

Please keep in mind, that I am NOT an expert like Mr. Murakami; I'm a hedgebush, he's a California Redwood. That said, I had some success by wrapping Aluminum tape around the Black ground wire going from the coil, and wrapping the spark-plug wire. You'll know you did it right when you hear the distinctive tapping sound from the plug....tat-tat-tat-tat. Also, indexing the plug is great, as well as using a non-resistor plug. Again, I'm just a fellow learner like yourself, so if anyone can add to this and make me better than I am , I'm willing to learn!

Any resistance along the way to the tip of the spark plug will kill the plasma. So, the answer is no, you cannot use cable nor spark plug with resistor.

It is just a simple 555 based interrupter. Yes, it is useful for my experiments. No, I haven't showed it in my video. It is very simple and you can find many similar schematics on internet.

Martin, you can make your own igniter unit by building a 555 frequency oscillator and sending the output into an automotive ignition module or mosfet fed with 12v and a heatsink on it. Output of module or mosfet goes to ignition coil.

The foil shielding acts like a capacitor itself. The radiated waste electromagnetic energy goes onto foil and is redirected to the plug. Okki, is the foil actually touching the plug electrode connectors on the wire? It should be isolated, right?

Okki I have an idea to increase the output further! Put a layer of wax paper over top of the foil tape...then another wrap of foil tape, then another wax paper layer and so on. This will make the capacitance increase substantially, just make sure no two layers of foil contact eachother. After wrapping only connect the outmost layer of foil wrap to ground.

Hi Mike, I don't think if you add some more dielectric and aluminium layers would make the spark stronger. If you do that, you are actually reducing the capacitance. Less capacitance means less spark intensity. If you want higher capacitance, you should use longer spark plug cables with only one layer of aluminium foil.

No, not from this increasing spark intensity.

First , this do not increase the total amount of spark energy , just redistribute it in to very short period of time Actually this will erode the spark plug electrodes faster and create larger EMI . The capacitor need to charge first to the spark gap breakdown voltage which take some time, so the rise of the secondary high voltage pulse isn’t so fast and this delay the timing advance ( that’s why starting the engine this way is easier) . Also the max secondary voltage ( without spark) drops so there is a jeopardy in some adverse conditions as in very cold weather to do not be able to jump the spark gap and there wouldn’t be a spark and the engine lust wouldn’t start . Also if spark plugs fouled the slower increase of the secondary voltage allow more time for leaking current tru the fouling which decrease the amount of spark energy if at all spark happens. Also the lowered secondary voltage may cause misfires during wide open throttle accelerations . Ignition systems engineers actually try to minimize the secondary high voltage circuit capacitance in order to minimize the capacitive part of the spark discharge and maximize the inductive one because of already mentioned reasons . The mentioned problems was observed in the past on military vehicles which carried radio equipment and because of that their ignition systems was fully shielded ( even the distributor cap and the spark plug boots) . So it’s not a good idea at all !

@@francoisbouquin5040 I’m familiar with corona discharge ignition method but not sure if this exactly is the way to go .Mahle “jet ignition” system already is employed in F1 . .Mazda HCCI - SPCCI Skyactyve even in their commercially available vehicles . Both mentioned ignition systems accelerate much more the process of combustion than corona discharge because activate simultaneously much larger volumes of air/fuel mixture.

Terima kasih. Penambahan kapasitor bukan untuk menambah tegangan. Disini kapasitor hanya dipakai untuk menyimpan listrik sementara sebelum mengalir ke ujung elektroda dari spark gap. Kapasitor bisa dipakai untuk jarak elektroda berapapun, tetapi harus diingat, semakin jauh jarak elektroda, semakin kuat radiasi elektromagnetiknya. Anda harus perhitungkan juga apakah igniter/interrupter anda kuat menahan ledakan radiasi elektromagnetik yang kuat dari elektroda. Satu lagi yang perlu diingat, dengan jarak 1 atau 2 cm, anda harus pastikan tidak ada kebocoran di kawat/kabel yang menghubungkan sumber tegangan tinggi (koil pengapian) dan spark gap.
