I would love to see an episode on this, I think that what to wear is based upon that skater, but it's really cool to see how diverse it is. My current go tos are plain top w/skinny jeans and a flannel or sweater around my waist....OR ....leggings and a skater dress (something that hits a little above my knees)

Meira Lana Lew I prefer to wear long shirts or jumpers over leggings and jeans as it protects my butt from hurting too much when I fall back. ( I just don’t like anything that shows off my upper legs/lower torso as I feel super awkward)

I know it’s off topic to this episode but I’d love to see a video focused on skating as a plus size person. I want to learn to skate so badly but I’m afraid of being too big and falling too hard.

Elliz Marquez I'm also plus sized. I don't think that being too big is an issue. It might be for people on the more extreme end because of equipment integrity, but I don't think they'd be skating in the first place. Not to mean to them, but medically they just couldn't. Falls are going to happen, just make sure you have your gear and don't try to catch yourself on your hands that. I did that when I as a child and learned the hard way. We tend to think to that we can't/shouldn't do a lot of things because of size, but you should honeslty just go for it. Start at a local rink on rentals and see if you like it if you aren't sure. Some places have free skate classes.

Yes... skating (probably ice skating, too... though I've never tried it) is a great way to lose weight (or stay IN-shape). I stopped skating a few years ago, and the pounds have come ON (I've gained 20 pounds since I stopped). I didn't "quit"... things have just gotten so hectic in my life, that I haven't done it for a while. I need to start again. I will... soon! Skating is so fun, so do it because of that, not just to get in shape. Whether you lose weight or not... SKATE! Just be safe. Don't skate on hills, and if you're going to fall... if you can, aim for the grass instead of taking on the pavement. And as was suggested... wear safety gear. If it looks like you're geared-up for combat instead of a casual stroll... just own it! There's no sense only wearing a helmet, because you want to look cute. When you get good enough to learn how to fall safely (yes, that is a thing)... you can wear lighter pads, instead of what looks like hockey/combat gear (although if you're in shape like I used to be - and in a bikini... guys won't notice the safety gear)! ;-)

i got back to my childhood fav of skating last month and have greatly improved in just these few weeks. i invested in the suregrip aerobic outdoor skate package at planet roller skate ($220). they have a metal plate which is good for heavier people (im 170lbs) and the outdoor/indoor 85A wheels are good on both surfaces. i especially like them at the rink bc they are not as slippery as the harder rental skate wheels. i also bought a safety gear set ($20) on amazon. i may skip the knee and elbow pads, but always wear the wrist guards both at the rink and park bc thats the most common and serious injury people get from falls. so, my advice to others with this question is safety gear, sturdy/strong skate quality, appropriate wheels that are easier to control on surfaces so you dont slip and fall as easily while you build your skills, and PRACTICE!

these are suuuper easy, you can google diy skate noose or leash and there are loads of tutorials and pictures. :) I made my own, and one for my friend, with materials that my mum had at home.

Hello, i love this video and I have followed it exactly. However, I am sew🙈 (see what I did there) new to sewing. I have a wonderful machine, but when you say dont do a seam allowance, where do i sew? Is it the zigzag stitch across the raw edge or as close as poss the edge so I create a tiny seam. I'm pretty sure I dont make sense lol, thank you for this video though i am really excited to finish my own boot covers for my ice skates.

Boot covers help keep the dust and crud off the skate. However,the tie guards are very needed as well. I have been skating since I was 6 yo I started outdoor skating in college 1980. It is the joy of my life.. I fractured my neck and I have found the KZbin skate videos to be inspiration for me to get back up on my skates. Thank you ( crying).

I did not see a step showing how to put the cover on the skate boot when it is on your foot. it seems hard to pull it up from the bottom. Do you put it on your ankle and then put your foot in the boot?

this comment is old, but I was thinking the same thing and came to the conclusion that you'd put the (not fully laced) boot on with the cover on, then lift up the cover and put it around your leg, lace up, then pull it back into place.

Synese Robinson she did do an episode on crossovers but that is a bit advanced. I do have a way to turn for you though. When you have to turn, spread your skates apart and lean into the direction you are turning, so one of your legs is straight (the one you're leaning into) and the other leg like with your knee kind of pointing In the direction of where you're turning but it's still a bit far from you since you're leaning into the other leg. This sounds complicated but i swear it's very easy

But I never move as smooth as I want to and I wanna make sharper turns. Maybe I just need practise or maybe my skates are crap. 😂 Did you have to losses your axle? Or was it really sturdy ?

Synese Robinson no problem! And just keep practicing. That technique does make you do kind of sharp turns . About the axel, Im pretty sure my outdoor wheels are always on tight and my indoor wheels a bit more loose, but I'm still able to do the turns so I don't think it's about how loose they are. Just practice and if you really can't do it, you might consider getting different bearings or wheels. happy to help 😀

@@synrobyn for great turns you will have to learn cross overs and remember, there is physics to skates. they don't turn on a dime, unless you're an expert skater, but keep on practicing. let us know what works for you. is this at the rink or on the street?

don't forget to lean into the turn. look at where you want to go. practice your turning leans. you might want to try to practice more edges to get this. catching an edge on the skating foot, then pushing with the opposing foot should help. Let us know how this goes. there are plenty of videos on how to practice your edges.
