This is not welding or brazing or soldering sterling silver, this is soldering silver with a soldering iron. There is no soldering torch needed for this type of soldering.

Beautiful pendant Laura, your videos have helped me so much 💚 do you have any tips for preventing tarnish or discoloration over time? I've used a "finish" on my pieces but it doesn't seem to be working well. Thanks so much!

Yes, just keep your pieces in small plastic bags when not being worn - its the air that causes tarnish

Lovely, but use flat pliers and you won't have such a hard 😅 time holding round wire.

Any tips on the the soldering iron tip melting? Thanks for your excellent videos! 💜

Are you talking the actual tip of the iron melted? If so, that's a dangerous tool and you probably should replace it. I have soldered and done stained glass for over 35 years and I have never had a tip melt. I use Weller 100 watt. They are great because you can change the tip sizes which is wonderful for jewelry, (just don't do it till the iron cools down.) I have been using the same iron I learned with in the late 80's and it still works just fine. I have extras because I teach sometimes. I know, TMI. Be careful. Have fun. Sincerely, A sister crafter.

@@kathybrigger9431 thank you! That’s probably the problem, a bad iron.

That could happen for a number of reasons, maybe you were using a tip that you bought separately from the iron? If so it might not be compatible. But most likely it’s because the protective metal coating from the tip has worn off either through friction, chemical corrosion, or it’s just worn out. I would replace the tip before you use the iron again. I have had a tip that did not melt, but something kind of ate away a big hole into it and I believe that was because the protective tinting of the tip wore away And then the heat and flux finished off the job. You can post a photo of it on my Facebook page at Dishfunctionaldesigns beneath my latest posts and I could take a look at it.

@@kathybrigger9431 I’m thinking the tip coating might have worn away and that could do it! It makes it look like the tip has melted or is disappearing. I had that happen with a Weller but it was a lower wattage.

Thanks for your great videos. I have a question about polymer clay. I really hope this isn't a stupid question but I'm wondering if you would be able to soft solder onto baked polymer clay with copper tape's assistance? I have searched for this answer and there are no real straight forward answers. Is it just that obvious and I'm that dense? Thank you

You could try. If you didn’t drown it in flux and you did it rather quickly not applying too much heat for a long period of time...you also have to be able to clean the flux off of your project so it should be able to be washable. You can solder on hardwood and hard plastics if you’re very careful so I don’t see why it wouldn’t work just be careful not to burn your polymer clay and would make sure it’s completely hardened. Try a test piece first before doing it on a nice project!
