Thanks for watching and subscribing to the channel!
In this video I document how to make a storage box. You can use this box for art exchanges, photos, or anything else that you need to keep safe! I use hardboard panels, and cover them with book cloth, using neutral pH PVA glue.
Let me know in the comments if you have any questions, I tried my best to edit down a lot of footage, so hopefully I covered it all.
Here is a list of materials you'll need for this project, you should be able to get them at any art supply store or art supply website, but I linked to dickblick.com just so you can see pictures:
*PVA glue

*Bone folder

Watching stuff like this makes me believe i was born in the wrong time. 200+ years ago before the rise of the machines, these techniques were "standard" with nice books, the bindery would have artisans creating boxes similar to this to encase books and protect them from shelf wear. For all my love of technology, it really does destroy human skill from the bottom up. Part of why i love what you do with your channel and business. The irony of old school high skill manual artistic work to create technology themed prints is not lost on me. Keep up the great work!

Hi Graham! Massive thanks for posting this! I used your template to create a folder for a set of cards explaining design terms and thanks to the very clear instructions even my prototype turned out really well. Namaste!

Hi Graham! I´ve found that if you use a small paint roller to spread the glue over the board or any surface where you want paper or fabric, it´s great. It works very well with big and wide surfaces that you have to glue together or to glue two pieces of paper together to make a thicker piece of paper ; you´ll have a super smooth layer of glue and avoids having spaces without glue that creates bubbles. ( spread the glue in a piece of glass or plastic, just like paint and after you stick the two pieces of material together use a big piece of soft fabric, roll it in the palm of your hand and smooth the surface from the center to the edges with it).

Paper conservator here. Nice tutorial, but: - if you want to protect artworks properly, you may want the flap on top of the art to cover the whole surface of what’s underneath instead of stopping half way. This way you’d reduce the risk of indenting or creasing the top sheets. - also - since you’re going to the trouble of making an enclosure - you may want to choose acid-free materials, at least for the inner lining, and use EVA instead of PVA.

Thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it! good point on the cover flap. The book cloth I used was acid-free/archival, and the PVA glue is pH neutral/archival, but what is the difference between EVA and PVA?

Well done Graham. Takes me back to the time, just out of art school, and working in the Packaging industry. I use to make these Ridged boxes that performed for our clients. All wonderful stuff... Aside... back then (dinosaur days) acid free was not a consideration.

Hello! Awesome tutorial - I tweaked it a little to make it a bit bigger HOWEVER I am wondering if there is any way to cover it with the book cloth even if the book cloth is not big enough to fit all the pieces on at once??

you can make the strap holes with a 1/4´´ chiesel, just hit it from the outside and it will make a smooth and even hole

Love this demo, very simple to follow and plan to make a few in the near future. Just a question... what is book cloth? Regular cotton/polyester from the local sewing store or something else? I assume you need a tight weave so the glue doesn't seep through.
@DiodePress
@DiodePress 10 жыл бұрын
The book cloth I used is a tight weave, acid free rayon material, but you can get it in different materials. I updated the info in the description box with links, so you can see what I used. I appreciate you watching!
