I made a set for myself based on your design, but with different geometries. It looks great, loved your idea of painting specific sides to give that look. One thing I did different was the sanding. I just painted first and then sanded the edges with the orbital sander so I got really sharp transactions between wood and paint.

Thanks for the video! These turned out great! I used 3.5” width cherry and maple and I just bought 3” walnut. I stained the cherry and prefer that one. I put some felt pads at the bottom for an added nice touch. FYI for new people you really need to clamp down the wood on the drill press. My test piece started shaking and moving a bit.

i'm a big succulent nerd. u definitely want a drain hole for succulents or they will slowly rot from overwatering. if you are dead set against a drain hole, just water SUPER lightly and carefully.

Really nice project. I definitely liked the dark wood with the white edges the best. I didn't care for the yellow edges but that's just personal preference.

That maple one is my favorite! Love how you left the figured ends unpainted. That’s really cool to be able to 3D print some liners as well.

It would be cool if there was some acrilic transparent dowels pieces inserted between parts of planters to keep them on same distance from each other and for easier maneuvering. But nice little prroject, love geometric shapes.

Just FYI 3D printed parts usually aren't water tight, especially in PLA. I'd recommend a post process of either spraying them with several thick coats of a waterproof finish, or dipping them/get a thin layer of epoxy around at least the inside edge.

Good to know! I tested the liners by filling them with water and letting them sit for a few hours. Didn't see any leakage so figured they would do the job.

I was very upfront in the video that the original planter design wasn't mine. one comment would have sufficed..... Going through and spamming every comment was not necessary. I do appreciate you trying to protect IP, but there was a bit of misdirected hostility here.

@modern craftsman I normally don't engage spammy comments, but I think the community here should see this conversation. First, I pride myself in my own designs, so the last thing I would want to do was take credit for one I don't believe is my own. The video description clearly links to revolution and says they are the designer of the planter I based mine off. I did exactly what you suggest earlier in the day before I even saw your comments, which KZbin rightly filtered out as spam. Based on that alone your point is without merit. But to top that off, I actually held off doing this project which was requested by many of my subscribers, until revolution no longer was selling these planters, so there could be no accusations that I'm somehow hurting their sales. What's more revolution liked my post on Instagram and subsequently followed me. If they are cool with what I'm doing here, which is sharing a process to create a really cool design with the community, then you need to be to.

Thanks Dominik! The Metabo HPT tools are actually from a different company, which is owned by the same parent company as the Metabo you are familiar with. Metabo HPT is the North American version of the tools sold under the Hikoki brand in Germany. It's a bit confusing :) I'm definitely seeing some of that German engineering from Metabo seep into the new Metabo HPT /Hikoki tools, and that is a very good thing, I think....

I've heard that having succulents in a container without a way for the extra water to drain from the bottom can cause mold and or the plant to die. Would it be possible to drill a couple holes at the bottom of the steel cups and then a few holes through the bottom of the wood portion to allow for drainage?

Interesting, I didn't know that. It would definitely be possible to drill through the steel with your average cordless drill. It's pretty thin. For what it's worth there are no holes in the original ones I got from Etsy. I've had those for 5 years now, and never had problems with the plants dying in them

That's if you over water them, they only need watering when the soil goes dry, but only a small amount

The planters are great and all, but the real question is, where do I get a cute "cat wrap" like the one you're wearing at the end of the video? Lol. (My older cat Nibbles used to sit around my husband's neck like that when she was a kitten (she's an orange tabby too) my little runt black kitty, Inky, nope you couldn't pay her in lbs. of cat treats to sit on his shoulders, lol!) But I do really like how the planters came out, one suggestion though, especially with succulents, you might want to drill a hole all the way through the wood that's smaller than the hole you drilled at top so the cup can still sit flush with the top of the planter, then drill a few small holes in the metal cup inside the diameter of the hole drilled through the wood & coat only the hole in a waterproof varnish so water can drain but not be absorbed by the wood. :)

Thanks Krista! My cat, Karma, has been with me over 15 years now....he's grown pretty attached and doesn't like to leave my side, so sometimes I just have to let him in the video :). Good suggestion for the holes. In my experience (had the original planter I bought for 5 years) it does OK without the holes if you are careful not to over-water.... That said, why risk it? Drilling holes for drainage is definitely a good idea

You're a patent attorney and partner at your firm. You live in a very luxurious Chicago apartment. Why in the world would you need squarespace to sponsor your video? Also, where is your shop located in relation to your apartment? Is it a separate space that you rent?

My shop is in my basement...not the most desirable. And things aren't always what they seem... I suggest trying to work 50-60 hours a week at a high stress job, then put another 50+ hours per week into KZbin, before judging. Im trying to be selective about my sponsors, and associate with brands I already use and like, but they definitely are what makes this channel possible for me.
