Thank you for this tutorial. I am a suit addict. A few years ago after paying hundreds for tailoring, I started tailoring my own suits. The vents have always been a difficult area for me and finding this is a game changer. I just completed my first try and the results are perfect. Much continued success to you, you've got a new sub.

One challenge that I have is fitting my very athletic son who has broad shoulders small waist and a big thighs/behind, and of course likes fitted suits. How do I take in the sides without flaring out the vents? His waist is 2" inches take-in on each side but I can only take-in 1 inch on each vent. Could you explain or do a video for athletic fit. Would love to get his suit done for New Years (sorry for the short notice). Look forward to hearing from you on this challenge. Thank you

I have been sewing for years and now that I have the time I would like to take some tailoring classes. I have made suits but, trying to get back into it takes some time. This helps me a lot. My question is how do several know when to take in the middle seam? As I have seen other tailors say never do this. What do you think and do you teach classes?
@AspiringGent2 жыл бұрын
I like to to take in the middle seam as a last resort if there is a pattern to the fabric. if the fabric is solid you shouldn't have a problem. And the classes I teach are here on KZbin!

Thanks for this one too, question: probably silly: When do you take in the back seam vs the side seams?
@AspiringGent4 жыл бұрын
SparksWillFly I take in the sides 9 out of 10 times. It just easier to get a better fit of the coat. Try and only take in the back seam with a solid pattern coat because if you mess with the patterns on the back seam it’s hard to get them to match again. Only take on the center if: You need to take in a lot, so you take it in from the sides and center. You have extra fabric in the upper back (shoulder blade area) that taking in the side won’t fix.

@AspiringGent2 жыл бұрын
Good question! sorry for the late reply but yes it's the same process! I get my interfacing from wawak!
@thatxonexguy54382 жыл бұрын
@@AspiringGent no worries! Also, i noticed on very high end garments like oxxford suits they use no fusible interfacing and i think they just use muslin or self fabric for what i assume is a "sew in interfacing" just as what i assume garment makers did back then before fusible interfacing was available. This interests me because I would want to prolong the longevity of my garments for as long as possible instead worrying about the fusing messing up with dry cleaning, plus I don't have to go out and buy interfacing along with searching for the specific type :p. Do you think you would eventually put out a videos how to do alterations this way (e.g. sleeve hemming and taking in sides when interfacing is needed)? I noticed theres literally NOTHING out there about tailoring garments this way.

Another question: I have a jacket with a centre vent, I've pinned it and it's going to look much better except the centre vent is now looking a bit weird and open. Do you have any advice for me? Thank you
@AspiringGent4 жыл бұрын
SparksWillFly when the center vent is open that means it’s too tight in the sides. So you might need to let it out a little. But if it fits how you like it and the vent isn’t too bad then it’s just the cut of the coat and there isn’t much left you can do.
