Now this is just kinda freaky. I've been researching PMF for the last few days. From what I understand,,,,, it's not really the glue, it's the paint. On something "foamie" you run a "tool of nails" over it to puncture holes into the foam, then coat with the glue so it goes all up into the holes and on top, then lay the fabric, that's also coated with glue on and smooth. Dry over night, do the other side, dry over night. Sand. Paint. Sand. Paint. Sand. Paint,,,,,,,lol. I have a composite in mind I'll be trying. But this, is really awesome, that you tried it :D

I moved to Texas from California and really miss surfing, but I noticed that even a smaller lake on a windy day can produce some small surfable waves i discovered this while kayaking. A large fish board would probably be the best board for hunting small lake waves, if you know where the sand bars are you can usually find secret surf spots.

Definitely will try this for a sculpture as I have a very large Styrofoam block that I've been meaning to carve up, but wanted to be able to coat with something that wasn't hundreds of dollars a gallon ! And, the fact that is is not toxic & lots of fumes is a huge plus ! I DID laugh at the "shop vac" through the hair, as that is another reason I haven't carved the block up ! The clean up will stink ! :/

THIS IS AMAZING! In nc we don't have the best waves, but we usually get pretty good shore break waves. My normal longboard gets beat up in the shallow water, so I thought, why not make my own! I've used pmf for other projects but I couldn't find any info on using it for surfboards. Epoxy is wildly expensive for a board that's just going to get beat up. This is great! It's almost like a $30 soft top.

Looks like you had lots of fun making that board. In regards to the foam, the correct grade is a M grade polystyrene, that’s what they use for all marine buoyancy product this also stops any compression when standing on the surfboard. Also with that air bubble getting under the board you would have been better off to put an knife incision directly in the middle of the air bubble and then purchased the cheapest construction adhesive that you can get your hands on and any hardware store and then injected it under the board to glue it back on.

Hehe, yes, they work amazingly well. You can lift them by the wood and the wood doesn't pull out. And when finished you can just pour out the rocks.

Next time try adding some "Poly Urethan Varnish" to your Glue-Water mix. this works also really well giving a hard surface. This is used in TerrainMaking to make StyroFoam more rigid.

Just what I was looking for. I make model aircraft and the technique is much the same, basically getting foam to hold up is stringers and/or planking. If you cut slots in the foam you can push thin flat carbon rods in after soaking them with glue. Then go for a super thin glassfibre cloth and poly floor varnish. The stiffness increase is insane. Great video!

Nice video. I will say that after watching your vid, I called Titebond regarding the relative merits of using Titebond 2 or Titebond 3 as I have a small boat project underway and plan to use Titebond 3 with cloth as you did. I was curious to know if there really is a significant difference between the adhesive connection of multiple coats of either Titebond 2 or 3. The answer I received was that generally there is very little difference in the adhesive bond of either TB2 or TB3. Further you can thin either TB2 or TB3 up to 5% by weight or volume without a loss of strength. I plan on thinning up to 8%, to the consistency of heavy cream.

Hey that's good to know! I had heard that TB3 wasn't as good at bonding with itself in multiple layers as TBII, but that would be great if it is! I actually just built a small sailboat this summer using bedsheet cloth and TB2 on the bottom edges, I think I just did one coat of TB2, nicely saturation the cloth, and then I used a alkyd paint (Rustoleum) which finished filling in the weave of the cloth. So far I have been super impressed with the alkyd paint/TB2/cloth combo, though I have now only had it for a couple of months. But my canoe is gonna need to be repainted next year- I painted it with a latex.

I built my first (super ugly compared to yours) board, using "pmf" and those dings are simply delamination spots, wood glue on -cotton- fabric does produce a quiet strong surface however, won't bond to foam, still, you did a great job!

Not really, My armpit to armpit measurement is 18 inches but the board is I think 26 inches. You don't need to be able to have your arm go straight down at the armpit to be able to paddle the board.

I see a number of customers using Titebond and Titebond II glue for "Poor mans Fiberglass" on boats, which to me is not the best choice. As far as I know, the regular Titebond is not waterproof, and Titebond II is only "water resistant" according to the label. Only Titebond III is labeled as actually being "waterproof" right on the label. If I were to use it on boat construction I guess that would have to be my choice because I would want the best I can get when it comes to keep things afloat, right?!

In a sense you are right, but there is one other thing to consider- Titebond III does not adhere well to itself, whereas TB I and II do. So if you are doing anything that requires more than one coat of TB, the tradeoff could be worth it.

@@LostWax2 Wrong! Titebond 3 DOES adhere to itself just like Titebond 2 does. I don't know who started that rumor, but it's not true. I have my test panels right here and have the cloth covered in three steps. It's as good as fiberglass with three coats on the canvas (sanded between coats) and smooth as a babies ass.

I love lost wax for its - often- make this awesome thing out of cheap materials that anyone has access to. I was hoping that lost wax 2 would just be a creative outlet that did something similar. But really I just find myself more and more disappointed with lost wax's new mentality like- dude - if you want a self stroking " look what I did" kind of a video journey just like - make a video blog or at least be honest and say that its a video blog. Your misleading intro like - oh I made a thing out of trash woo! You could too ! Its the " poor man's fiberglass" that I designed on my computer ($$$) and then just printed out on simple paper and made a pattern for by taping pieces of paper together! I just used some cheap trash lying around my house! Like this hot tub ($$$$) cover! Then I used poor man's fiberglass and all the clamps I could find to glue it all together! & I cut it with a circular saw ($$$$$$) Used a metric TON of wood glue, paint, epoxy resin ($$$$$$$) oh and this bed sheet and some fabric I just had laying around... its such a CHEAP project! It's so ACCESSIBLE. Oh yeah... then I just added some SUPER simple finishing touches with my THREE D PRINTER!!!! ($$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$) and my freaking airbrush with an industrial air compressor ($$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$) and cleaned up with my SHOP VAC! ($$$$$) My family joined in. Im such a thoughtful family guy doin what I can with simple cheap materials and you can too! (well that is... ya know... if you're affluent enough to afford all this equipment AND a house with a garage that you have the privilege to use as your own personal workspace AND you have both the affluence and the privilege to be able to afford all this stuff and still be able to support several children and.... oh you know... just happen to have these simple cheap things lying around *cough* computerpersonalprintercircularsawhottubcoverprofessionalclampsgalonsofwoodglueepoxy3Dprintershopvacindustrialaircompressorairbrush *cough* I mean look at this cool simple thing I made out of cheap trash I found lying around my house! Foam wood glue and fabric! SO COOL! Hey - Good for you man. It's nice to know that during this time of suffering and joblessness terrifying impoverishment the likes of which few countries have seen in decades... and INCONCEIVABLE AMOUNTS OF DEATH. People with families and houses and the kind of affluence that allows them to use hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of equipment 'lying around the house' to turn trash into treasure for their own amusement - are doing that - and making videos about it. Cool story bro. The rest of us are gonna go back now- to facing horrifying life or death decisions about whether or not going to work or school is worth the risk of potentially killing hundreds more while we starve on our scraps but hey - it sure was fun watching your make your " poor man's " surfboard. Wow, intense! Though I do appreciate feedback from everyone, so it's good to hear how you feel about what I do. If you feel that way, there probably are others thinking the same things. I honestly didn't make this to stroke my ego, this video is from a project I just wanted to make for myself, and thought someone else might appreciate/learn from the successes and mistakes I made along the way. It would have been a lot faster and easier if I had just done it by myself and not filmed/edited/spent a bunch of time to post a vid on a YT channel that isn't even monetized. And, yes, I do use some tools, though most of them are inherited/ taken from the garbage and fixed/ bought at garage sales for under $10. I'd say most are over 50 years old. 3d printer, you're right costs a bit, but this project could easily be made using a wood fin box and wooden fin. No need to do a fancy airbrushed paint job either. I really just want to help people create and give them ideas that they can use to jump off of and build on. And, yes, I am so thankful that I have a garage, especially because I live in a place that gets to -40deg in the winter, which happens to be at least 6 months long:) I used to live in a tiny little shack with snakes and rats living in the roof, but in a beautiful country, and I would swap the house and garage for that shack in a second. All right, that's it for me defending myself:) I totally agree that I am privileged to have grown up where I did, in a middle class family, and it's not O.K. that others have to work so much harder to get the same opportunities I have had growing up. I believe that everyone is valuable and deserves to be loved, educated, and treated with respect and equality. You'll be happy to know I am currently designing some knight armour that uses only my standard foam/hot glue paint combo, as well as making a sweet fun little glider from just one sheet of foam board and hot glue.
