Being from South Africa originally I grew up wearing bush hats. Style very much like an Arabian Akubra Cattleman hat. In fact I own one of those as well as several leather Rogue South African Bush hats. Now I live in the U.K. I do get some looks when I walk around with a hat on. It’s just not that common over here any more. No we do t have people walking around with bowler hats on anymore. I do like your hat designs as they are more bush hats style than modern cowboy style. I may have to invest in a well made American hat but have them shape it more like a bush hat. A rattlesnake hat band would be unique in the UK 😀

I have a horse hair hat band that was made for me when I was 14 years old. It was woven out of Quarter Horse hair trimmed from the stock horses used by the Kineños on the King Ranch, which is near my hometown of Kingsville Texas. The ranch foreman, Lalo Mendetta, who was also a really good weaver. He also made saddle blankets out of wool. His wife managed a steakhouse that my parents owned, so when he saw the new black Resistol cowboy hat I had gotten for my 14th birthday, and surprised me with a great looking twin tassel band. It’s now 57 years old and I just put it on my newest black Resistol hat, I retired the hat it was made for, which I still have after 57 years. Over the years I’ve put horse hair hat bands on all of my felt and straw hats, but reserve the King Ranch hat band for my nicest hat.

I'm a former workig cowboy or Buckaroo depending on where geographically I was working and I wore the hatband that came with the hat for a while until I got tired of it. I made my own hatband out old used boot laces either wrapped a couple times around the hat or I braided 3 or 4 strand laces. I often fixed the hatband to the hat by poking a couple holes through the brim as close to the crown as I could and threaded through old boot laces tied to the hatband to use as a Stampede String Old boot laces were strong enough to hold your hat on in a strong wind or a galloping horse. However the string was weak enough to break if your hat got caught on a tree branch thus not hanging you without court proceedings.

I love this episode. I had tried to make some hat bands out of rattlesnake before. Well, at least I started too before my sons got ahold of the the tanned snake skins. We harvested some rattlesnakes, then I skinned them, scrapped the membrane off of the skin, and stuck them in to a gallon of antifreeze for a few weeks. I took them out, rinsed the skins off, and ended up with nice supple and flexible skin that was preserved. All this happened years ago. The only problem was that the rattlers around this part of Idaho are smaller. Snake River Prairie rattlers are smaller than their southern cousins. None of those snakes were big enough to make a decent hatband. Thanks Santee.

Most of the timber rattlers we get around here are too big. I have one on my straw hat I killed in my yard a few years back that was only 2 foot long. I use salt to tan mine. Hello Santee. Off-topic question, if you don't mind. What music did you use at the end, before your customary Cartoon Hoedown? Thanks.

I used some free music about "inspiration" I found on Creator Studio.

If any one else wants to duplicate the band, that is a 1907 sling. Fairly easy to find you can evem just buy the hardware

I watched that Netflix special for 6 minutes and 39 seconds. Why? Because at that time stamp they included a scene of Brisco County Jr. and Lord Bowler riding into town. i couldn't believe it. I rewound it several time to confirm it (the scene only lasts a few seconds). I turned it off after that.

No kidding? I missed that. Not sure I gave it even 6 minutes...

Not at all authentic but I like the idea of a hatband made of braided paracord. Instant survival cordage.

Initially I read that as "the rustic husband". How many cowboys were married? Was it feasible to leave your wife and children in a town and go to work on a ranch?

Mending a hat shows that they were valuable possessions. I feel a distinct hand made hat band could show the character of the one wearing it. How about a video of Dirty Dan clips? He seems to have mellowed in his later years or is he just fooling me? Santee I thought you might enjoy this channel. A man has bought land in Oklahoma. He dresses in proper western period clothing . It's fairly new (14 episodes) He has shown how he built a wood and sod house step by step among other things all on his own. Link: www.youtube.com/@WesternPioneer If it does not rain here in Oklahoma we are going to be seeing dust bowl days. Not kidding.

I had a friend from Indiana who used to say "tighter than Dick's hatband" and the meaning is clear but I always wondered who Dick was. Have you ever heard that saying? I think it is a mid-West thing.
