DIY tubeless inserts for less than £10 - cheap gravel bike upgrade

Fitting a set of tubeless inserts to a road, cyclocross or gravel bike is a great way to ensure that your tyre isn’t going to roll off the rim at low pressures, it adds some protection when riding over rocks and roots, and it means that you can continue riding should your sealant be unable to plug a hole. But branded inserts are very expensive, so we made our own.

I tried 30mm backing rod with 33mm cross tyres. There was no way the tyres were going back on the rim. I tried again with 20mm, but I'm not sure they're giving me the full benefits of inserts, although I probably could run them flat at a pinch.

A sealant syringe is cheap and makes tubeless setup and maintenance so much easier I don't know why anyone "couldn't be bothered." The right tools go a long way to make a job like that easier and cleaner. I run tubeless on everything down to 30mm, and will never go back to tubes.

I have no idea why anyone puts in sealant directly in the tyre. It's far easier to go in through the valve stem, assuming the stem allows a sealant injector tube to pass through it. If it doesn't, throw it in the bin and get a proper stem. I bought a couple pairs of Hunt wheels that had these rubbish stems and replaced them with Muc-Off ones.

Just bought some from Amazon and it's quite a bit softer than the airliners. I do think they would work to keep the tire seated if it blows, but not necessarily work to ride on with a flat tire

@@satrujillo30 Good to know. For the same effect, we should know the exact density of the airliners and find the same density PU foam. That should work, but many times the density is not mentioned.

I’m enjoying the bike so far kzbin.infoUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA My only real complaints are the brakes and the pedals. I feel like a bike designed for bigger people should have much larger pedals and more heavy duty brakes. I’ve only gotten two really good rides out of it, minimal downhill action, and the brakes feel like they’re already going out. A larger person has more momentum, so I think this wasn’t thought through very well. Also, I wear size 13-14 wide shoes. My feet cramp up on these pedals that are clearly made for smaller feet. Since I’m not a pro rider (and I don’t think many are who purchase this bike) I don’t think that the straps on the pedal are necessary at all. None of this takes away from the enjoyment I get from riding, however. I’ll just head to a bike shop to improve on a few things.

Mmmmm, so you save $30 but risk your $1000 wheel rim. I've run on a flat tubeless tyre for 45 km at a steady 30kmph with a Vittoria gravel insert, keeping the tyre both on the wheel & keeping the rim off the tarmac. The Vittoria road is I'm told even more advanced in that the insert collapses under air pressure but expands to keep the tyre on when pressure is lost in the tyre 👍

At least we get to see levers being used to remove and install the tyre. When I tried tubeless - and I do like the concept - it's advised that using levers could potentially damage the tyre bead causing it not to be airtight. Well good luck with that! Maybe with big mountain bike tyres it's possible but never on road tyres. I've always had to resort to levers for both removing the tyre and replacing it. Maybe there's a tiny chance to install with just my thumbs - and I've got close - but never to remove the tyre.

Interesting Liam, thank you. I imagine the Vittoria and other vendors optimize their insert's shapes and durability treatments. Question about those products, how do they handle the tire area around the valve? Are they shaped to fit around/under the valves? Will definitely give the diy approach a go, though my sealant technique is a bit less messy than yours. 👍😉🫡

I just do t understand why the industry is pushing for more tubeless. As I understand the use/advantage for off tarmac use, the functionality of managing a puncture is very very very messy and you end up carrying a massive repair kit and a tube just in case. Am very happy with my latex inners and even happier with the original rubber tubes as they need less maintenance
@gezakopter1153
@gezakopter1153 Жыл бұрын
Actually quite the opposite. My tubeless "repair kit" is a screwdriver like tool with rubber wormies, thats pretty small when packed up, like tubolito or so. The classic sealant is messy, but since a year I started to use Mariposa Vegelatex, and that thing never dries, so it can be cleaned up, washed off your clothes. In one season I usually get 5-6 punctures on my gravel tires. Usually I find that out when I am changing tyres for the muddy/dry season. :)
