Today I will show you how to make a simple dress just by sewing a cute fabric onto a store bought t-shirt. You can use this method even if you are making a dress for grown ups. To figure out how much fabric to use for the bottom of the dress. Simply double the waistline measurement, if you wanted more volume just add more fabric.The fabric I am using is 100% Rayon Voile very lightweight, soft and ,flowing. This was the first time I worked with this type of material. I was surprised that it was as difficult as I thought it would be. You just to be careful when cutting it since it it lightweight and it moves while cutting.I am really pleased with the final result. It literally only took me an hour to make this. The beauty about this sewing project is you don't need patterns at all. That is why it is a perfect sewing project for beginners. These type of dresses are so trendy and they can get quite expensive. Making your own is a lot less and the garment is very unique no one else has it. I wish you saw how excited my daughter was when I showed it to her. She loves flamingos so this dress is personalized to her style, she may be 5 years old but this girl will tell me what she wants when I'm designing her clothes.

You need to wash and dry your fabric first. Then you need to iron it before do any sewing. You can also hem it before you do your gathering. I would have also done my gathering using a wide zig zag stitch in this case.

Never heard of using zig zag stitch for gathering. Seems like that would impede gathering. No?

@@linw5302 it’s a nice quick trick to gather with a zig-zag. It might be hard to explain but I will try… you adjust your machine to the widest zig zag setting (as if you were basting with it) but when you stitch it to the material you hold a separate scrap of something like thick thread or dental floss is really perfect. (It sounds silly but it works because the wax coating makes it slippery). So, you hold the dental floss or scrap thread so that as the machine sews the zigzagging the scrap falls between the width of the zigzag. When you finish then you just pull the dental floss while cinching up the fabric and that forms the gathers. It probably sounds as clear as mud with my explanation. I’m sure there are videos out there. I learned it on Craftsy.

You can stitch a thin elastic on the waist seam to cinched in the waist. You have to stretch the elastic as you sew. Use a zigzag stitch.

When you say you will be using stretch stitch, what is that please?

Stretch stitch allows a stretchy material to stretch so the threads will not break. If you look at your sewing machine if you see a stitch setting that looks like a lightning bolt that is stretch stitch.
