Hi, in this video tutorial I show you how I made a turtle shaped lamp using a balloon as a base, some cardboard for the paper clay and acrylic colors. This is a creative way to teach children about recycling and also stimulate their imagination.
The little turtle is inspired by a cute "Light a Way" character called Turtie. Light a Way is a fairytale-inspired mobile game about a girl who ends the eternal darkness with the light in her heart. You can play the game here: goo.gl/TtLHQQ
Today's video is sponsored by Appxplore, the developers of this awesome game, to celebrate Earth Day.
I started by making the paper clay from the cardboard. It is really easy and cheap to make because we only use two ingredients: cardboard and P.V.A. glue (polyvinyl acetate glue, commonly referred to as wood glue, white glue, carpenter's glue, school glue, Elmer's glue in the US). I used an old blender to make it really smooth. I tear the cardboard to pieces and place them in the blender. I add hot water over the cardboard pieces and start the blender. When it looks like a homogeneous mix I squeeze the water out trough a sieve. You should squeeze as much water as you can. I then add the glue. I used about three tablespoons of P.V.A. glue in the mix you saw, but you should add one spoon at a time and mix it to see if it has the consistency you want, and keep adding glue until the paste is the way you want it to be.
The next step is covering half of the balloon in a thin layer of paper clay. After the paper clay is dry I cut stripes from some toilet paper tubes and glue them to the bottom of the shell to make the little waves Turtie has. For the legs and neck I used toilet paper rolls and made little cones out of them. I glued the legs and neck to a cardboard base. I connected a smaller balloon to the neck so I can make the head shape. I also made some leaves for the top and for the tail. I covered all the new elements with the homemade paper clay. To reinforce the curly tail and curly top of the turtle I used some wire from a hanger. After it was dry I sanded the surface and added a lot of little holes in the surface of the shell. The lamp will have a cool light effect from those little holes and spread the light in an awesome pattern on the walls. This is way different from the fairy house lamps I made in the past, where the light was coming out through the windows and doors. The video can't really show how cool it looked in the dark. I painted the turtle in acrylics. I started by making the whole turtle white, then I added layers of acrylics. I placed some battery operated LED lights in the turtle so it looks awesome as a night light.

Frequently Asked Questions: 1. What clay do you use? I use a paper clay. I either buy it or make my own depending on what I want to create 2. What's the difference between the bought paper clay ( amzn.to/2r5FEHY ) and the homemade paper clay (A) kzbin.info/www/bejne/gpy8eJl4r8SAirc (B) kzbin.info/www/bejne/lXbJXohslr94pas ? The homemade one is not that soft and is only good for textured surfaces like stones and tree bark. It is very cheap to make so it might worth to sand it and work it a little more than buying a paper clay. However, you can't keep it more than 5 to 7 days in the fridge. It has the best consistency when you just made it and it's fresh, so I would recommend you use it in the same day or the next and don't make more than you need 3. Can I use air dry clay? What's the difference between air dry clay and paper clay? Often times shops will sell both paper clay and ceramic clay with the same label "air dry clay". It's true, both are air hardening but there are quite a few differences: air dry clay(ceramic clay) is actually mud, natural clay, while paper clay is made with cellulose and other ingredients. Paper clay is stronger than air dry clay(ceramic clay). Air dry clay (ceramic clay) shrinks and the paper clay does not shrink. This is why paper clay is the better choice for my kind of projects. My projects usually require you to cover a jar or a plastic bottle. If the air dry clay shrinks and the bottle or jar remain the same size... you guessed it... your air dry clay will crack all around. It might be a lot cheaper but it's not what you need for these projects. 4. My clay cracks, how do you cover the cracks? You don't, you change your air dry clay to a paper clay! See why at the previous question 5. How to waterproof my paper clay creations? I recommend using a yacht varnish. Apply a few coats and make sure you cover it all around so no water touches your clay 6. What brand of paper clay do you use? I use "Das modelling material" - amzn.to/2r5FEHY 7. Where can I see the list of materials? As a general rule of my channel... READ MY VIDEO DESCRIPTIONS! I write it for you guys, is no secret what I use. For every video I write a description of what I do and what I use. 8. Do you sell your creations? No, not yet, my daughter loves them too much. 9. What colors do you use? I mostly use watercolors and acrylic paint.

I found this video randomly and clicked it because the turtle looked cute. And it is super cute, but thats not what I'm so excited about. That paste! Its like paper machete peanut butter and I love it! I can think of several projects I can use it for both for crafty type stuff and cosplay. Great video and again that lamp is adorable.

Creative Mom this is fantastic! I’m currently making one of your fairy houses but this could well be my next project. I was wondering though, do you think it would work with regular clay instead of the paper clay you made? I have leftover clay from other projects but card tends to go straight into the recycling unless I know in advance to save it. Thanks for all the amazing tutorials and ideas!

I know this video was uploaded quite some time ago, but I've just been catching up with craft video's now that I have my first grandchild. I was hoping to find things that I could make, but as I'm only brilliant at doing cross stitch, its not the kind of thing that you can put together in a few days or weeks, depending on the size, but she can't play with it or watch it, but what wouldn't I give to be just as talented as you are, maybe just even half as talented as you are. I'm so useless when it comes to the practical side of crafts 😔, in my head it looks brilliant, but in reality, it ends up being a total embarrassing piece of junk!! .. .. I would love to do something like this for my grand daughter, but I'd end up giving her nightmares rather than sweet dreams .. A shop bought one just doesn't have that 'special' quality to it, knowing you have done it with your own two hands!! .. Oh well, I might have to wait for my her to get a little older & she might show me how to do it. I hope you get to read this, probably not seeing as it's a little over a year old, but just in case you do, please carry on with the EXCELLENT projects you do. They're FANTASTIC, you are so talented & a mum, what more could you ask for!! ~ ~ Kindest Regards xx

You're adorable, and I feel your pain!! Everything I made was always a fail until I slow, slow, slowed waaaaay down and things started to turn out so much better. These time lapsed videos are tricky - they make the projects look so simple and quick. But if you read the narrative, you'll see she said it took her about 5 days to make this turtle. So it would not be unreasonable for this to take us - as beginners - twice as long to make: 10-15 days. :) If it's not given in the craft, I will sometimes write the person and ask them how long the entire process took. I always double the time frame for myself to lower my time expectations so I'm not in a hurry. I say keep on trying! Practice and patience makes perfect! :) Good luck!

I love love your channel. Beautiful presentation and the imagination with the steps to complete your wonderful pieces make it look too easy its unreal. So many of us who cannot even fathom what you do to create such works is beyond imagination. Thank you. Thank you for your efforts to make us feel it's worth stopping here if only for the final outcome of your work. Such a blessing. Well done yet again. ♥
