Genuinely impressed that you're DIYing a high top on an express van, not many people have the bravery required for such a project. Bravo!

I fully expect to have some regrets down the road since I am doing this by the seat of my pants, but I'm learning lots and hopefully making mistakes so that people who follow after don't!

You had the same idea as me but I think I’ll go with sheet metal
@Bbluox3 жыл бұрын
Much more practical to use metal, aluminum if you can because it’s light. But wood was right for my project :)

I was also thinking to do it out aluminum let's see how it comes out I will be posting some videos

DIY Van High Top Shell Part 1
@ESLinsider3 жыл бұрын
Cool. Is that in Utah? Or Idaho? How much did the metal top cost with the welding and all that? I've seen some people use wood which looks easier but not sure how strong.
@momsberettas95762 жыл бұрын
Do work in a metal shop? Or do you just have all those tools yourself??

Great Job! I would have put on the plywood siding before I put the shell on the roof. Any reason why you didn't do that? Would it have been too heavy to lift?
@kkaattiiee2023 жыл бұрын
Hey I love what you did here! I'm hoping to raise the roof on my van as well. I was wondering how this impacted your insurance?

What size/gauge is the steel?
@Bbluox3 жыл бұрын
Can’t remember the gauge offhand, but it’s 1 inch tubing for most of it and 1x1.5 for the base where it attaches to the van.

Seriously? Loose the steel and plywood. Way to heavy. Use aluminum for the frame.

If you’ve got experience with aluminum and how to seal/weld it, it’s a great option, though not very strong If there’s an accident. As it stands my shell added 350lbs. I’m happy with it and like the look a LOT better than an aluminum one.
