Welcome to Joule Works
This is a powerful DIY digital variable bench power supply with lots of options. I have used ATX power supply, WZ5005 module and a step up boost converter.
The variable power output is 0-50V/ 5A (CC/CV), and also 3.3V, 5V & 12V fixed outputs (Max. 10A) . Total output power max. 223W.
I have used a 3D printed casing (PETG material), but you can make the casing using any other method (using wood/ plastic sheet or even project box)
If you need the casing design files, download link in the below. But you may need to do some changes to the design according to your ATX power supply dimensions.

Remove covers from power supply for better cooling, also remove excess wires from power supply board directly. Very nice job, the case looks good.

Every time I watch a video I learn something. The Current/Voltage module features are something I thought was built into the WZ5005 which was not. Thank you for sharing!

I have the same boost converter. I boosted 12V to 30V, I only could get 3A max and the input current was above 10A. I tried 3.5A but input current raised upto 15A, there's a 15A fuse at the input side. In this video he boosted 12V upto 54.5V. I'm pretty sure maximum you can get is around half an amp at 54.5V.

As a person who also makes cases to 3D print for projects, I do have to say, JOB WELL DONE! That is a gorgeous case and I love the way you did it in pieces that fit perfectly. I love the texture that your printer makes on the face. My printer's texture bed got damaged, so I had to get a new glass, but without that texture on it. So my case faces come out smooth and shiny, which I like. But that texture on the faces of your prints is just perfect.

Suggestions Epoxy in the USB port instead of hot glue. Make use of the screw fittings for the PSU. Even if that means a wooden rear panel rather than 3d printed. Add in a second 12v and ground line to the voltage booster input (as long as the 12v is from the same rail this is fine) Add a second cable to each banana plug (you definitely have enough 12v, 3.3v and 5v and should have enough grounds) Add in a 10ohm 10w resistor between 5v and ground. Most ATX PSUs require some kind of load on the 5v to work properly.

Nice but the weakest link is that horribly noisy little boost converter, I would have it feed a capacitor bank with a large 5 ohm inrush limiter. (6 x 470 uF caps from old ATX power supplies would work nice in parallel)

@@rondo1233actually it won't blow up because ATX PSU has protection circuit built in, if the load is too high the PSU will shut down. But he used only one 12V wire, that single wire isn't capable of delivering 12A. This ATX PSU rated it's +12V @ 12A, that's 144W. The boost converter always consume more power than it's output power. He boosted 12V upto 54.5V. He claims this PSU delivers 5A @ 50V that's 250W. You see it's not possible to get 250W out of 144W, right?... And the boost converter has a 15A fuse at it's input, boosting voltage upto 54.5V from 12V will consume more than 15A of current when a load is connected. I'm pretty sure you can only get few m.amps of current at 50V.

I would be interested in 3D printing the casing but could you please export your Solidworks files in .step format so everyone can use them. Solidworks files are not compatible with any other software.

I have a VERY strong question; (I AM VERY CONFUSED); the diagram shows and indicates for the "Current Constant Adjustment" TURN CLOCKWISE (+) TO REDUCE CURRENT; AND, TURN COUNTER CLOCKWISE (-) TO INCREASE CURRENT ; The ( + and the - ) sign contradict the statement to increase or decrease current; I ask YOU, is this an ERROR or am i in error; I just want to make sure i'm reading this correctly before I burn the unit up inadvertently...PLEASE HELP ME ON THIS....Thank you!

Yes, your are right, this is an error. Just follow the arrow direction with (+) & (-) signs. Thank you for pointing out this. I will make this correct.

Joule : Saludos, I have another question and hope you can give me an answer; On my ATX P/S I cut off the connectors on the wires and I have a small problem, I ended up with 13 Black, 7 Red, 5 Orange, 3 yellow and (1) each of Green, Blue, Violet, Brown and Grey; Should i bundle and connect all the black's together and the same with all the extra same colored wire's (making one (1) wire of Black, one red, 1 Orange and 1 Yellow; If it's NOT too much trouble "PLEASE GIVE ME AN ANSWER ON THIS"; or if someone else reads this and has a solution will appreciate it very much.

Yes you can bundle same color wires together. Also keep in mind one wire is rated for only 6Amp.

It's not a problem step up voltage to be stepped down after?
@BlondieSL
@BlondieSL 2 жыл бұрын
Nope. The preference would be to use a source that could output the 54 volts, but that would entail a full design of a supply. So using a step-up to get the 54V is an acceptable solution, even though, electronically speaking, it's not efficient. For a professional product, one would not want to have that. But for a DIY, sure, why not.

How can you make this miracle happens? Using a 225W power source and a boost converter (91% to 96% efficiency) you'll get up to 250W output? 216W at its best. Do the math.

Isn't the front panel a buck converter as well? It has an input of 6V to 55V and an output of up to 50V. Don't think you need the extra 400W Buck converter....!!!
