DIY Vespa Sprint 150 and Primavera 150 1st Oil Change

My 2020 Vespa Sprint 150 had 380 miles on it and was going into its third season of use. I decided to change the oil a little before the 600 mile recommended service. The oil change procedure is the same for both the Sprint and Primavera 150's so hopefully video will help someone!

You should wet the seal on the oil filter not because it helps seal but it makes the next oil change easier to get the filter off. You also only need to hand tighten the oil filter. Next oil change that filter is going to be stubborn.

Good video. I have one question. Robot shows screwing the dip stick all the way in to check the oil and you show just being snug like Honda does. Question is does the manual say that or was that just how you do it? I like the looks of this Primavera and was trying to decide twixt the many oil burning GTS or the few Primavera with a having the fuel pump problem. I know, I've had 32 bikes and never had issues that show up on the forums....just read to be aware as sooner or later the odds are I'll be one of them 🤣 As an owner of the Primavera, anything else I should be aware of? Nice channel by the way.

Hi Willa, the Vespa Sprint/Primavera manual says to check oil while cold and with the cap "completely unscrewed". Honestly, I don't think you can go wrong with either measurement as these are very general purpose engines that are not too sensitive to type, weight or even fill level. Love Robot!

As for Primavera, I totally understand researching things to a point where you can convince yourself that's it's not worth the risk. Like you, I've been fortunate with my purchases and I wouldn't be afraid of the Primavera regardless of what you're reading. They are not complex machines and in a very improbable worst case, you can easily DIY repairs with online information or pay someone a relatively low fee to fix it. I happily rolled the dice on my Porsche, a car that literally plummeted in price because everyone was afraid of the many ways it can fail catastrophically. No regrets.

I'd change the gearbox oil. The manufacturing isn't very clean, Piaggio is infamous for some of the dirtiest break-in oil in the entire industry. I've got four modern Vespas, it states in the service manual to change the gearbox oil at 1,000km in all of them. And the gearbox loves to self destruct if not well maintained, there are huge shearing forces on gear oil, it takes maybe five extra minutes to do.

Dude, that's way too tight for the oil filter. Oil filter should be snugged on hand tight, MAYBE 1/8 or 1/4 turn more with the pliers, but you kept going and going. It may be difficult to remove in the future. The seal keeps it from leaking. You don't need to crank it to prevent leaks.

Leaning your scooter over like that is not practical for the average DIYer. Plus, you risk the bike falling and getting all scratched up. The whole oil-fill system on these Vespas is garbage. The best way to do it is to use a syringe and inject the oil into the bike.

Ive changed oil thousands of times on dozens of different Taiwanese and Chinese brands. Im a dealer. I find it infuriating and thoughtless the way that Vespas are designed. They KNOW that oil changes are the most common service that needs to be done, and designed the scooter to be harder to change the oil than literally every other scooter in the world. And why are they put together with Torx bolts?! Makes no sense whatsoever

the whole point of a Center Stand, instead of a regular kick stand, is to be able to service the bike.... so why do they have a center stand that gets in the way of servicing the bike??? And don't get me started on the insane colorways and special editions that Vespa does. It's AWFUL and shows that corporate is asleep with morons in charge.

that orange funnel would never work, you would have oil spilling out! that's why you never showed the oil being added. when you drained the oil, no oil came out! you tighten the oil filter by hand, using the removal tool to tighten i'm sure damaged it.. lots of red flags on this one...how do I know I just changed oil om my Primavera and it's a nightmare adding the oil..you have to get a !/4X3/8 hose and put on the end of funnel and put the other end in the small hole where dipstick goes TRUST ME piss poor design

Sheesh, if the orange funnel didn't work, why wouldn't I have just talked about it and showed a solution? And when I drained the oil and no oil came out, why do you see oil flowing and a drain pan filled with oil? Do you actually think I staged this video? The world is round and the orange funnel worked. You might have noticed that I had to add the oil SLOWLY, but it worked. Also, I used the filter tool carefully and did not damage the filter. If so, I would have showed the damage and warned about it. That said, I don't think hand tightening will be adequate and viewers should have a plan to spin the filter an additional 1/4 to 1/2 turn using some sort of tool. You just can't get enough purchase on the filter with your hand.

​@@PIFDIY- With normal hand strength, you can easily tighten sufficiently by hand. Tool is likely to lead to overtightening.
