Yes, horribly unreliable system. All it takes is accidentally using too much force and the window jumps track, breaks the handle or on the rare occasion, just completely break's the window

In the eighties I did modifications for drivers with disabilities. One was a motor over the window winder shaft. Basically this video, but smaller. They were manufactured, and bought off the shelf. The challenge was the mating adaptor to the window shaft as they varied between car models.

Red Green will never be replaced by AI. He might be replaced by AS (artificial stupidity) but never AI. The show was funny because every fix he filmed was a bad idea. The humor was in how his character always thought his bad ideas were good ideas.

I grew up with a 1990 Aerostar van with manual windows. Great van, bench seats, lots of legroom. The next van had electric windows, and it was so annoying to need the keys to roll the windows down.

Those electric window winders are made of plastic. They break down, and then it costs hundreds of dollars to fix them. The crank will work till the panels fall off your car, because everything is metal. I think they put them in cars, so that when they break down, people go to buy a new car. Sort of like Pavlovian training for car owners. :-)

I just changed the first power window regulator in my 2002 suburban with 220k miles. The motor was still good and the regulator cost me $42. There is no reason power windows aren't as reliable if not more reliable than crank windows. I've seen many crank windows with broken off handles from the regulators getting stiff.
