Thats because America like the Uk hasn't decided what the minimum standard for any US citizen or British Subject should be...We ( western countries) have all the materials to recycle and make small safe, complaint tiny homes for homeless, low income or the otherwise needy.. In our countries there is no reason for a homeless class of people to exist..we shld have a bottom line and thats all. For me a small desk chair area and a bed withto a combi shower room/loo. should be enough for a start to help people mentally. NO-one can tell me that being homeless doesn't effect a humans sense of selfworth etc . In japan i have seen these spaces maybe 12ft by 8 cleverly designed to be coftable enough for a single inhabitant. But apperently its impossible for "modern" western socieities to do this... Not only that you dont have to put them all together like a prison if each state had faculties for 2000 people...but spread over its smaller districts they would integrate into the local area better rather than creating a getto area.....but we will never do it..Becuase it is an easy problem to solve and for some reason we choose not to.

i dont understand why we don't have little communities of tiny houses. Why not just tear down your house (or somehow get your neighbours involved and tear down the whole block), plant hedges all the way around so no one can see it (doesnt lower property value, actually increases it because of nice hedges) and have a bunch of people living in tiny houses. think about the benefits: Low property tax because there will be more working people per property (like 3 tiny houses can fit on one property so 3 working class citizens instead of 1 or 2 maximun), almost totally off grid (tiny houses often have solar panels and compost toilets). Also you could just plant a large garden in the middle of the property/properties and keep a cage of rabbits (i live in a strict no farm animals neighbourhood but i have neighbours who keep a cage of rabbits in their front yard without getting in trouble) and you're set for most of the year food wise. boom like a mini village in the city :)

i run sewer lines on new homes being built. scrap pieces of 2x4, 2x6 even 2x8 wood up to 6 foot is pretty common both treated and untreated are discarded on every job site. not to mention everything else that's thrown away... insulation, shingles, bricks you name it. nails are always thrown all over the place. you want a good supply of materials just simply ask someone on the job site and they will say yes take what you want from the trash pile. if you get up with a general contractor; he/she might even give you the leftover materials from multiple jobs. i work with someone who built a big deck in their back yard and another who built an awesome shed for free. if you have too much pride to scrape the bottom of the barrel; you will never be rich. one of the richest women in the world started off by recycling paper and cardboard from junkyards and still does and has more wealth than opera. people who have a frugal state of mind are made for success from the ground up. there is no shame in that.

Although I live in New Zealand, it's the same old problem with land prices. Way too expensive for folks looking to secure their first home. You are a great inspiration. Thanks for sharing.
