At the U-pull I got a spare dipstick. Chopped the very top off and glued on an extension handle from stiff fuel line. Pull the car's dipstick when it's cold and put this one in for all the ins/outs during the process. Then put the original back. Then, I chopped the end of the return hose at the u pull and attached that to clear drain hose. So just pull the hose and snap in my custom drain hose and go to town. I also got some hose that fits in the dipstick port and did 2 things. 1 - duct tape it to my regular funnel and 2 - tape it to a stick as a stiffener so I can accurately and easily push it into the dipstick port.

I just bought myself a 2004 model XC70 as well (my dreamcar - the looks of those models just appeals enormously to me - even more than later models!). Luckily the former owner did`t know anything about cars, so he has sent the car to authorized volvo mechanics every time (and has done all services - even 20k km ahead of schedule). I know the automatic transmission can be a problem with these cars, but undoubtfully if you treat it well by flushing it at least every 60k km, it can live and last for a long time. Your video was a great great tutorial for me, and I do feel I can be able to do this myself (I love trying out repairs myself, if possible, and videos like yours are extremely helpful for me). Thank you a lot for your effort! Now I can treat the car of my dreams even better :) (at least when we know that automatic transmission can be quite expensive if you don`t treat it right!).

Thanks a lot, my roommate have a 2002 volvo v70 XC (also been called XC70 sometimes). He bought it with 105,000 miles on it, the transmission shifting funny when hot, take 2-3 second go to D gear from N gear, and pretty slow (takes 2-3 second.) when shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear and 4th to 3rd gear. After follow your instruction flush the transmission several times and add in-line filter to the low pressure line. Also replace the B4 servo cover on the transmission, which just cost like 25 buck on IPD. Now it shifting a lot better then before, although still have a short delay shift in 3rd gear, but way better then before. When we fist drain the fluid from the drain plug, the plug is full of tiny metal piece, and the fluid coming out is totally black like 5000mile engine oil, it smells not like transmission at all and have a burnt smell. We using the valvoline multi-vehicle atf, the red bottle one, because of it's full synthetic, and 4 quart only cost $18 in walmart. Now, the car have 120,000 miles on it, running very strong. like you say, it also get 1.5 MPG (22.1 to 23.6) better then before . If we haven't seen your video, this transmission probably fail very soon, and cost $$$ to get another salvage transmission with same problem. Sorry for my broken English, but I really appreciate your work for this video, and give us the great idea about in-line filter.

Very good video 👌 this helped me save my car from the scrap yard. A couple notes: You don't need Mobil 1. Anything "Toyota T4 or JWS3309" compatible is what the factory spec is. You also don't need to drain the transmission in the beginning. You will be pumping out all the fluid anyways. It uses the same amount, just less work. Get an extra green clip and orings and keep them in garage for next time. Half the time the green clips break.

Great instructional video.. My opinion is too much fluid was used. If it holds 8-qts, 8-10 qts should be plenty to purge the old fluid. If its really nasty, repeat the process after driving the car a few weeks.. This allows the new fluid to clean all the internal parts and passages, requires 300+ miles of driving.

The top cooler return pipe was tight in the rad, twisting the pipe and push pull while nipping the green tabs did not work at first. Sprayed some silicone spray in more push, pulling and twisting and the pipe/O rings gave their grip up and it came out. I am using a fill system based on a hospital drip. plastic container with handle wire hooked to the bonnet catch using a hosetail in the base connected to a 12mm od length of clear plastic pipe and ends up in the dipstick hole. I am using a 19mm od clear plastic pipe pushed in the cooler return to purge the oil 2l at a time. No specific problems with the transmission but do occasionally get a rough change down from 2nd to 1st and delayed change up 2nd to 3rd when the oil is cold.

Despite not having the exact set up of the XC70 (Volvo did away with the trans dipstick and you have to remove the air box to get to the fill plug) I'll be copying your inline magnetic filter and doubling the amount of fluid I was planning on buying. All new bottles were weighted and then I put the waste oil back in the bottles and weighted them again. I also had my pile of rags weighted so I could account for the oil I spilled. When I was all set and done I probably had it refilled within an ounce or better.

If you just drain a fifth of the fluid and refill every time, in an AW55 with no filter, you're leaving contaminants in the transmission which will accumulate and cause problems. Best not to cheap out and just do it properly. Drain and fills work on a Honda Civic but it won't work long term on any Volvo with an AW55. A transmission is an awfully expensive thing to gamble on, especially when the entire flush takes about 80 bucks and no tools.
@stevemccooleq4 жыл бұрын
@@plopping-wetlyacademyofmot9639 Considering that Volvo calls the factory fluid a lifetime fluid and Aisin sees no need for a filter, adding fresh fluid at every oil change (going above and beyond what Volvo & the transmission manufacturer recommends) can't really be called a gamble.
@plopping-wetlyacademyofmot96394 жыл бұрын
@@stevemccooleq the "lifetime fluid" just means manufacturer isn't liable for the failures after the warranty expires. BMW says the same thing and they also have plentiful failures with their transmissions. Again you are missing the fact that there is *no filter*, and automatic transmissions have numerous tight spaces in their solenoids and valves. If just drain and filling, you are *leaving debris and contaminants in those spaces to continue to accumulate.* Its less expensive and less work in the long run to just do it properly. It literally takes a few minutes with no tools required. Under $100 even with synthetic fluid. No you're not going above and beyond anything, you're treating a 12.5 quart AW55 as if it was a 7 quart Honda system..apples and oranges and no, drain and fills are not helping in a transmission with no filter. 🤦♂️
@charging74 жыл бұрын
@@stevemccooleq by not putting a filter on that system at the factory and by claiming it should last the life of the vehicle, Volvo has demonstrated zero care for you and me as the consumer. You can use Mobil 3309 or Mobil 1 Synthetic. The trans fluid flows from the pan through the transmission, through the cooler and back into the pan. If you just drain the pan the dirty fluid that is still in the rest of the trans will mix with the clean fluid you just put in the pan. When you flush the trans there is less mixing of the clean with the dirty. (I know that this transmission does not have a pan. It has a reservoir for the fluid in the transmission.)

As far as connecting to the transmission cooler, I went to the local u-pick wreckyard and cut off the end of a hose from a doner car since I was not planning to install a filter and did not want to cut the existing hose. Worked like a charm. I then connected some pvc hose like you did. I only flushed with 12 quarts and in retrospect should have purchased another three as I did not quite get to a bright red by the time all was said and done.

The Transmission is the only thing that is making me squirm in the seat when it flares...my guess is that it's never been serviced. I'm going to pull the trigger on this Saturday. Is there any chance you've made a video on head lamp bulb replacements for those of us with thick hands? Damn Swedes must have very long, lean and strong fingers...; )

The headlamp bulbs are very easy to replace. It has a dust cover that you unscrew. I replaced mine with LEDs from eBay. (6000k). They last much longer than halogens. In fact I replaced mine about 5 years ago and still good. Halogens lasts about 1 year.

I had to pull the front bumper to get to mine. I can't reach them otherwise.

I understand the method used here which is fine. However, I highly recommend having some one help you. Drain 1 quart, at the same rate add a new quart. Repeat till you complete the job. Running a Transmission low on ATF can be risky. Better to be on the safe side. Other than that, good video.
@mrc48104 жыл бұрын
It pumps out 1 quart in about 5 - 7 seconds, pouring the same amount into the filler hole takes up to 30 seconds. So sorry that does not work.

I used to do that with my 940. I'll try it on my V70 - I believe that my helper can switch off the car to allow 'extra' time for the new fluid to go in (since apparently the outgo rate is pretty fast).

Thanks. A great help. I'm curious as to why my engine service warning light went out after the flush (it's been on for about 3 years). I can't imagine the car 'knew' the trans fluid was changed. Perhaps just a coincidence as I swapped out the brake pedal position sensor a few days ago and it took a minute for the fault to clear. Cruise control still intermittent though so I don't imagine the sensor was the cure. Anyway...yes thanks very much, got me through the job just fine.

Yes, definitely a 23mm or 15/16" drain plug socket size.

Thanks, just got an 07, trans maintenance was a big concern, this vid helped. Any opinion on a trans fluid cooler? I live in Florida.

This was a brilliant video with everything made very clear. Thank you

There is 7.1 liters of fluid in the trans and you can only drain out a little over 3 liters so about half of the dirty fluid stays in the transmission. I guess that you could drain 3 liters every 10,000 miles of so and it would be good enough but I hate to leave any dirty oil in the trans.

Plug size if 24mm for anyone thatll find it useful, helps for preparation

Great job! I just wish I had the compressor to power my tools. ⚒️ Great job. I’ve owned many Volvos they sure like to hide the simple basic access points! 😅

Nicely demonstrated. You made it look easy to do. Excellent!

I've Flushed 25 Litres through the gearbox on an XC90 with 237K Miles and it's still brown I drained the sump then I kept flushing it through the oil return Line I got 25 Litres of transmission fluid and it was black at the start and after 25 Litres it's a light brown So how many more Litres will I need to get it Red as it feels like it's taking forever!

Instead of raising the car, can you pump the oil out from the dipstick hole? 🤔
@mars1952Ай бұрын
You will have to try that yourself. I don't know but I think it would probably take a long time.
@jaskajokunen3716Ай бұрын
@@mars1952 i did and it is possible, i did it with a 15€ handpump takes few minutes to pump out 1 liter so its not too slow

YES, Levitation!! Thats the way. I can get you some high strength, practically invisable acoustic support wires for your speakers. Only $11,000 per speaker. Think fishing line but not..... even comes on the same kind of roll. Can be shipped via First Class post

Thank you for such an encouraging video. I am curious about the pipe that transfers fluid from transmisssion into the cooler, is it the one the you see at the top corner of cooler ? I can see one pipe coming out of transmission going into top portion of cooler.....

This is an excellent, informative video. That was very resourceful to get an in-line transmission filter even though Volvo doesn't make one... It prob says on the bottles which ones are good for Volvo XC or V70, but which Mobil 1 product did you use?

Hey Mars1952 where are you located? I would like to ask if you could work on my car. I like your work ethics it shows that you are a real mechanic just like the old schools. Just saying. I just can’t work on my own cuz no space or tools. Thanks david

Dear Mars, thanks for the video. One question: can the flush be performed by repeatedly draining oil from the transmission oil drain and them topping off? i.e., without having to drain from the transmission oil cooling radiator? Also, when running the engine to recirculate the transmission oil, should the transmission oil dipstick be taken off so as not to create a vacuum? Thanks.

hi,great video. just a question.i want to install the inline filter on my xc70 2004 but i m not sure if 3/8 will be correct size. when i measure top part of the metal tube i get 12mm or 1/2 but on the plastic hose it measures around 19mm or 3/4. could you tell me whats the measurement on yours?thanks a lot

Great video but I'm not clear on the flushing part. Did you discard the flushed fluid or reuse? If you discarded, how many quarts does it hold? I probably sound pretty stupid but I simply don't understand that phase of the service. Anthony
