In this video I build a wall mounted workbench like the one wranglerstar has in his shop. I use 2x6's and one 2x4 plus hardware. This build turned out to be really strong and looks even better than I imagined.

Just finished designing my workshop in Sketchup, saw this and went back and changed it all. Debated a leg-less bench but wondered about strength and well, looks pretty sturdy.

Great video, keep them coming, it is a really nice looking bench and the legless design has some advantages. tips as you requested: yes, when using those lag screws into the wall, a washer is needed. the diagonal braces will translate the downward force weight of the bench into an outward force pulling at the upper ledger board connection to the wall, much like using the claw on your hammer to pull out a nail. Washers will reduce how much the lag screw heads bury into the board over the years. When gluing up a pair of boards with a wandering bead zig-zag of glue, wiggle them around for about 10-15 sec can spread the glue more evenly. When screwing a horizontal board to the wall, make a mark for the bottom and temporarily attach a scrap at that point to rest one end on. If I may offer an opinion, the double layer of 2x lumber for the bench top is overkill, an apron board attached across the front of the 3 supports would hold a 3/4" plywood top that would feel just as solid, cost less, and the reduced weight would put less strain on the wall attachment.

Alternatively, could I replace the 3/4" plywood with a single layer of glued 2x4's? Any problems there other than weight/cost?

@@kerouwhack edge gluing a single layer of 2x4's would still give you a very substantial top. I'd rip-cut them first to get rid of the rounded factory edges so you get a flat top, and join the boards with biscuits, dowels, splines, or even pocket screws so that temperature and humidity won't split them apart years later.

Really great tutorial, was able to adjust your flaw slightly by positioning the bolts for the bottom ledger on either side of the diagonal support, works flawlessly!

This is the perfect bench for me - I need to roll a motorcycle lift under the bench when not in use. This has plenty of vertical room for that. Plus, my garage shop is also white paint over OSB, so I knew this was the right place!

GREAT BENCH! I will be making something similar out of oak in my living room for reloading and gun cleaning. I'm a bachelor, don't have a nagging wife anymore so can put anything in my living room. One suggestion is ALWAYS spread glue for a stronger bond than just a bead of glue. In fact my "old world" Journeyman carpenter taught me as an apprentice (a long time ago) to spread glue on both surfaces. I have never had a glue joint break doing it this way. Again Great build, be careful with that back!

Great job! I like to economize on glue by applying it on one end and using a piece of plastic or old credit card to spread the glue toward the other end to cover the entire surface.

Good tip. I have seen those rollers that work well for getting the glue even.

Glue on one surface, place second component on top and rub back and forth and a bit sidiways. It will spread the glue evenlyin a thin film which will cure more quickly and make a stronger join, no messy spreaders to deal with dripping where its not wanted and wastes very little glue.

I did something similar but used 4X4's for the "legs" which went all the way to the baseboard area of the floor and framed the top using 2X4's - then I used some kitchen counter formica top - 12' if I recall - for the top. I could dance on it. Then again, I need a work bench without legs getting in the way and am not a carpenter type.

Fantastic job and an excellent commentary as you went along. I guess I would need to see what you're going to be using the bench for. Seems to me that it's sturdy enough to park a '59 Buick on it with no movement of the bench at all. I watched the video because I'm interested in building a wall-mounted workbench. I will now have to consider making it a bit more sturdier than my original thought process. Mine is going to be a swing-up and have legs that fold down and lock into position to support the bench as a work surface - and fold-down when not needed. Looking at 30" deep and 50" wide with a solid door cut to size. Not as elaborate as yours, but you're more highly skilled at woodworking than I will ever be.

That bench might strong enough to put a tractor on! A friend of mine did a bench similar to this one using 2X3"s on edge for the top that were glued together and randomly screwed. We put a big block 454 Chevy marine engine on it and it didn't make a sound. Having no legs to the floor makes room for your feet and sweeping up is easier, too. Nice project, good job!

I have a customer who wants a similar design for multiple work stations in his office. It will be 45 feet long U shape pattern with the top made of 3/4" thick melamine board. So I won't need the amount of support you have on yours but I like the concept and design. Thanks for sharing!

The plans for this bench call for you to cut them 1 1/2" D x 4 1/2" W x 26 1/16" L and glue them together to make them 3" D. Cut them square, then add the angles (45° is what the angle is). There are plans available for $7-10 on Woodsmithplans.com . They are for a 6.5' long version. Also, if you're just getting started I'd also take a look at Paul Sellers for some quality free education.

................. And what I did... was to construct a ten-foot long workbench.. piano-hinged to the ledger board attached to the garage wall, just under the windows.. and just clears the foundation underneath when folded down... providing total vertical clearance when down.

The top seems unnecessarily complex and pointlessly overbuilt. I have 3/4” plywood top and I’ve never had an issue. But I’m glad you love it, that’s all that matters! I did like the execution for the floating legs tho. That’s why I watched your video. I moved into a new house and had to adjust the previous owner’s poorly made bench, and now I want to convert the front two legs (4x4’s) into a leg-less design like this.

how much do you estimate the costs? and if you could includes dimensions and the material needed that would greatly be appreciated. looking to do the same exact build. the only things that scares me is the supporting pieces. if i understand correctly you flatened your 2×4 so they could rest against the wall. then you added a flat 2×4 onto the wall and drew the 2×4 marks onto the supporting piece?

Great video! What do you have behind that wall that the workbench is mounted into? Are those just normal 2x4's at 16" center? I'd like to do something similar in my garage, but I'm concerned about the amount of force the bench would apply to the wall.

Yes I just have 2x4 walls 16-inch on Center. I have not been too rough with this bench but so far it seems extremely strong and there's been no problem with the walls supporting the weight. I do have rafter ties on the top plate to help prevent wall bowing. If that makes a difference I dont know.

The channel wranglerstar made this a few years ago. I had to dig through his hundreds of videos to find the build. It was in at elast 5 parts so I made this in a single video.

Oh yeah, for those searching for the plans and have an extra 10 bucks laying around, I'll link the online plans which also include tool holder and tool/book shelving. I did not need the plans as I found this video more than a sufficient tutorial. I did improve on your build (I believe) and for those of you who want know. I planned my bottom ledger board a little lower so that my 45 degree supports were longer, thereby bringing them out closer to the edge of the tabletop. This adds a considerable deal more support and also leaves room for a shelf that is drawn in on the plans you can find online. I believe wranglestar also displayed them in his video. Please don't mistake this for criticism as I think you did an amazing job. Any design, including mine, can be improved upon, right? Hope this is helpful

Hello. To be honest I am not sure about mounting to brick. Might be worth adding a couple support legs to the ends. That does take away from the wall mount idea but gives it a lot more downward strength.

why did you double the boards for the top ?

The top is staggered so doubling it allows for overlapping boards. This makes the top much stronger
