This is like 25+ years ago but one time my Dad who used to play got fed up with the price hikes for the rhinos he needed for his chaos Space Marines so he decided to use cardboard to build the rhinos all from fruity pebbles cereal boxes. This was like early 2000s I believe possibly earlier than that so I don't have pics but he actually got it submitted into a tournament because the people working for GW inspecting for the tournaments were so impressed that they just allowed him to play with with tanks because it was actually pretty spot on and on the bottom you can see the fruity Pebble print lol

FYI Tamiya thin cement is 50% butylacetate and 50% acetone, you can buy both in 1 liter bottles for a few quid. Their airbrush thinner is almost identical, supposedly having a tiny bit more acetone. You can make yourself a lifetime supply for a cost of like 2 of those tiny jars.

From what I've heard, the butylacetate is only in the mix to help it evaporate slower. Pure acetone does a much better job, but evaporates very quickly.

First, the flower press. Great idea. Use plywood between layers as it will allow many layers in the press at once. Second, try cartridge paper ontop of the greaseproof. This will absorb the acetone evenly as it sets. When hard soak in water to dissolve the paper. It may need a bit of encouragement with sandpaper but this will also flatten the sheet.

Great work! It does look like a executioner. You don't even have to squint so I think you did an amazing job :) You could have smoothened it out more using sand paper. Start with 400 grit and move up to 1200+ and water sand it and you can get completely smooth surfaces. Just a tip that MIGHT work. Obviously I havn't tried it on a sprue build like this but should work :) Great job again!

I was thinking something similar. Maybe making the sheets *slightly* thicker, then picking up a cheap palm sander from the hardware store.

Not really your focus here, but it occurs to me that combining sprue scaffolds like your using with reused cardstock or plasticard for the flat panels might work well and be easier to deal with. You could have used some flat washers in between the two pressing pieces to assure even thickness of the "Spruegoo™panels". Also, something I'm considering doing in the future/summer, try using a vacuum chamber (air pump, big old cooking pot, thick plexiglass lid) to suck out the air bubbles in the "Spruegoo™panels". Obviously there should be some sort of a frame to assure the "Spruegoo™panels" take the correct shape and some sort of breathable material (cheese cloth, thin plastic construction wire mesh or aluminum modelling mesh) over the material to prevent it from warping or getting wave like deformations. The remaining texture could literally be ironed out between two pieces of baking paper under a clothing iron. In fact sprue could just be melted into panels with a clothing iron and baking paper. People melt bottle caps like that all the time.

@xanafein845310 күн бұрын
On that subject, I was wondering if the blend is done by weight or volume. I'm assuming the 50:50 blend is determined by volume but I dont actually know. Acetone is like .8 kilo per liter and n butyl acetate is .88 kilo per liter. I wonder if that makes any difference.
@CMDR_BananenKeks10 күн бұрын
@xanafein8453 since we buy in volume and not weight, I'd say it's measured in volume. But even if not, it doesn't make much difference. The solvent is acetone. Butylacetate is probably for the flow or something

You should try getting a silicone baking sheet or two to make sprue goo panels on - nice and smooth, anti-stick and thick enough that the panel shouldn't be able to deform it as it cures and shrinks. Perhaps look at getting a pasta or playdough roller as well if you dont already have one. Im sure you could make some silicone rollers if they dont come with them - might be a bit better than the flower press. Nice tank though. You could try this again but spray it with acetone a few times to partially re-melt it and get a nice, pustulent, nurgly surface finish.

👍👍 Been doing similar things in the car, plane & armor disciplines of the hobby. I use a "Hot & Cold" versions of sprue goo. Hot is thin, dries fast. Cold is thicker & takes an eternity to cure. Glad to see U detailing this

You may want to try make a flat frame, fill it with the goo then put them in the grease proof, invuted textures on top of the grease proof (separating the texture from the goo but may not he as detailed) between the boards, should help with keeping flat panels for walls and plates

I think it's a remarkable job. I love your Blue Peter concept, I'm from that genre too. Talking of recycling, I love the fact that it's only sprues, but might I suggest you use plastic packaging for your panels. It's already straight, and we throw it away otherwise. I used to add panels together so they are thicker. But think of things like lids from margarine, takeaway containers etc. All pretty sturdy. Used to keep clear windowed plastic from boxes to use as glass and stuff too. It may just need a gentle sanding to get it primed properly. Great job though, it's easy to cover it in battle damage.

Have you heard ot filler primer? It is used in automotive work, very common on wheels as it helps hide small scratches etc. I think it would really smooth out lots of the imperfections pretty well, and quick and easy. You will get it in halfords, it often a horrible yellow colour and would want priming with something else before painting.

No hate, but i think the same effect could be attained with miliputt, clay, or puddy. Using sprues for the frame is definitely a decent use of the material. But I think there needs to be sanding involved for those "flat" surfaces to be properly flat and metal panel-like. Maybe some etching like they do with gunpla.

I have 2 tips. - if you add borders in the press you could create more regular panel to use, Maybe if warm base could help evaporating and reduce bubbles - after 2/3 hours when the base is still solid but deformable can use texture rolls of green stuff to create some texture layers to add in some area with pipes ecc…

Fantastic job. Put a bottom pannel and an actual base and I don't think anyone would comment about it not being correct, it certainly looks so from a couple feet away. My only suggestion is that when you get the basic shape done and all the holes filled in, go over it with a sanding block and get it smooth. If you did that I think it would come out looking pretty damn solid.
