Years ago somebody dumped a small portable firepit in my yard. I did the same thing: plugged the holes, spray painted, filled with rocks, installed two solar water pumps. I also set up a Ring camera very near the birdbath so I can watch the birds play. It works great.

The hummingbird lady at Robbie and Gary did this years Ago and I did it ! No rocks , used a a round utility bucket and bottom catch tray of a plastic garden pot … used soldering gun to make holes … It runs all winter except for the occasional day I have to unfreeze it all if we are below freezing for a few days in row ! Birds love having a bath in it and appreciate the water all year ❤

Awesome! I made a similar one with a round terra cotta pot and then a wire basket turned upside down with the pump inside, then another small terra cotta pot upside down on the base of the wire basket. The hose comes out the hole of the smaller terra cotta pot so it give the birds a place to land and bathe. I even get tons of hummingbirds at that fountain as it’s got the water running over the base of the small terra cotta pot giving them something to hold on to. So fun watching them!!🥰

I hate the idea of birds messing on the pepples and sluicing back into the water....... so, I will make one with a bowl of water to put a cleaner plant in the bowl to hopefully keep the water pure!! But good idea with the bucket!!
@emmsue1053 Жыл бұрын
@@valerieenglish1003 Why is that? The birds just want to have a lifesaving drink.. Personally thought the whole idea was for the wildlife? It must be awful to be hot & thirsty but unable to turn on a tap (faucet) or pop to buy some water?
@valerieenglish1003 Жыл бұрын
@@emmsue1053 Yes, I've been putting down water for the local birds, fox and squirrels over the last few weeks: it's all thirsty work looking after the babies..... Last year was weeks without rain so tragic for wildlife..... I saved one HUGE Bee from drowning in a tub: and placed shallow dish with fruit...... Dragonfly and butterfly's can then get their strength back! Raining today in London: thank the LORD☔💯

Great idea! If you pinch the tubing with a clothes peg or something like that, it will reduce the amount of water flowing through and so stop the fountain flowing too far out.
@mindofmadness55937 ай бұрын
Very nice and gives me several ideas. Bought the wife a bird bath but, it's shallow and the water gets very hot and evaporates. I will fill it with sand, build one of thses and partially buy it to keep it cooler and the critters have more water. Maybe a kiddue pool in our woods, we gget deer, coyotes and small game thru there and me, being a photographer, would have a great time. :)

Few times I have wanted to make holes in plastic, I have done it by heating the tip of a metal skewer on the gas hob and used that. It works really well. Just obviously be careful not to touch the end and cool it down by placing in cold water afterwards.

A few things that would have made this go better would have been a drill, a breather hole in the top would have probably helped water drain in better vs more holes, and perhaps not using jigsaw in a way that risks removing body parts. The fountain is a super cute idea, I bet birds LOVE it. Nothing better than sitting outside in the morning with coffee on a nice day and watching birds play in water!
@christineeverson8402 жыл бұрын
Matthew could you tell me what a breather hole is I’ve never heard of that term?
@mattypants2 жыл бұрын
@@christineeverson840 just a hole somewhere water isn't that would allow air flow. Whether you put it on the top and extend it up a little with some tubing so it's above water or maybe even the side somewhere depending on how full the bucket is. A normal fountain doesn't need it because the water comes out and falls directly into the pool and the pump mechanically sucks it back up. In this case, the water falls on a surface above the pool and has to work it's way down to the pool. Or suction is created depending on how sealed it is and the pump works harder, which may slow water flow since the needed extra power isn't there. It would also allow a slightly stronger pump to move water up at higher volume and create some pooling for the birds to splash in. There's something called an assassins tea pot that explains how airflow helps (it's also kinda neat to realize how smart humans were a thousand years ago).

But great job working with what a lot of women have on hand in their homes. 😊 *Make sure the slit for the cord is big enough, otherwise it "could," pinch the insulation inside of the cord & cause a fire. & you may be able to find the mini pump & hosing for much cheaper at a pet supply store that sells aquarium equipment.
