I use parrafin wax alone. What I do is agitate it in white spirits in a peanut butter jar until the parrafin has been disolved in the spirits and the fluid is a milky white. I place the chain in the jar and agitate (shake) it about every 2 or 3 hours. The next day I remove the chain and hang it overnight. The white spirits evaporates leaving only a clean, nearly transparent coating. For quick lube jobs I have a solution of parrafin and white spirits in a plastic "hotdog stand" type condiment bottle. Some people worry about riding the chain in rainy weather. Parrafin is not soluble in water. As a younger person living in a cold climate I used to wax my skis and wooden tabogan all winter every year. The wax never "washed off". My bicycle chains stay faaarrr cleaner and never make a noise. The wear on these chains has slowed by a huge number of kms. I should mention that I do have Scottish ancestry and am inherently cheap.

You will have found that white spirit dissolves wax slowly at room temperature ( unless it's hot where you are ? ) . The solvent will evaporate from the surface but inside the chain it will remain a paste for a few days. If you don't believe me , try sandwiching a thin layer of white spirit / wax paste between 2 flat metal plates , wait a couple of days and look the result . You could use isopropanol ( propan-2-ol ) instead of white spirit but there are dangers since to be effective the mixture has to be warmed above the melting point of the wax ( about 60°C ) . Isopropanol boils at 82°C so you have to be careful and there is a flammability risk. Really the best option is full immersion in liquid wax , either in a slow cooker or possibly using a 'double boiler' . The treatment lifespan of a chain immersed in 100% wax tends to be longer than using drip waxes.

I tried paraffin wax only the first time I waxed, the chain was very noisy. Now I mix paraffin with Molybdenum Disulphide, works great. With Oil I needed to replace the chain every year. With Wax I get 4 years out of a chain, as well the gears do not wear out.

It's one way to lubricate the chain. Oil however does something a little better than waxing. Oil penetrates or absorbs into the actual chain metal, creating a non- oxidizing barrier from within. Along with of course providing exterior lubrication.

I'm trying to wax my used chain. Do you have any suggestions to get the chain clean enough to do this, without an ultrasonic cleaner or buying a brand new chain. The only downside I can tell is that there could be grime in between the rollers if you don't use ultrasonic cleaner, but that would probably just cause drag (micro decrease in watts). but it shouldn't damage anything, right?

@@meitou6174 If you have a quick link, you can try what I do. I remove the chain, place it in a plastic peanut butter jar and put in enough white spirits (naptha) to cover the chain. Close the jar, shake it around fairly violently every hour or 2 until the fluid is dark. Pour out the fluid, refill with more and repeat until the fluid no longer is dirty. I am usually happy with 3 such cycles.

Before you try anything check your chain elongation. There's no point doing a waxing prep if it's >0.5% . Also unless it's an expensive hard wearing chain, I wouldn't bother unless it's done say
