I find it wholesome that whenever someone's had a genuine desire to learn about what Ron's doing any handiwork and how he does that he's willing to stop and explain. For all his guff and dislike of people in general, he seems to take pleasure in helping people become self-sufficient and that's awesome and wholesome at the same time.
@contentiouscritic3 жыл бұрын
It's the part of Capitalism / Libertarianism that people don't like to acknowledge, people genuinely enjoy helping uplift others into self-sufficiency and freedom. You don't need government to force people to help people.
@michajozwiak55573 жыл бұрын
@@contentiouscritic Yeah, we genuinely enjoy doing that in social democracy too, because it's also a system based in self-sufficiency and freedom. We just put away some of our money into a communal pool in case someone breaks an important appendage or gets hit by a car in their pursuit of self-sufficiency, because we don't believe that freedom needs to involve exposing people to unnecessary pain and hardship. There are enough challenges in life for everyone.
@contentiouscritic3 жыл бұрын
@@michajozwiak5557 capitalists can easily, voluntarily put away money for charity or emergencies. Such a system is ACTUALLY based on self-sufficiency and freedom, where the one you described forces people’s participation by way of government guns. You can’t call that freedom, it’s the inherent opposite, it’s government. You can claim it’s worth it, or that it’s moral, but let’s not play Orwellian word games and pretend that “being governed” is “freedom”
@contentiouscritic3 жыл бұрын
@@michajozwiak5557 also you have a terrible concept of freedom if you think it’s a controllable concept that can include what you want but not what you don’t. That’s not how this works, freedom is; “the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint” or “the state of not being imprisoned or enslaved.” No where in the concept of freedom does it say “prevent exposing people to unnecessary pain and hardship” because that’s not freedom. It’s security. “Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.” - Benjamin Franklin

@@contentiouscritic my man. ron swanson is a caricature of the average libertarian. obviously everyone has redeeming and likeable qualities but the *comedy* in his character comes from the absurd heights of his so called "self determination". like literally, the biggest point of growth in his character was learning to let others in and share in the burdens he used to stubbornly place on himself. also nick offerman himself is a socialist who support universal healthcare and a $15+ minimum wage.

It also wouldn't have worked. The wall sconce was made of Nickel and Brass plated steel, so would not have been able to be melted down. But lets use our imagination and pretend it was made from cast bronze and aluminum pieces even though the rings he showed being made were from Bismuth alloy (could have been lead, but I'm going to give the show some credit of being mildly intelligent). The bronze and aluminum would not be possible to melt in a cast iron pan with a torch. Given Swansons character, there's no reason they shouldn't have had him wheel out a small casting furnace with a Si carbide crucible to properly melt and cast the metals into rings. Honestly, a bit disappointed.

4:12 Ron’s right about the medicine expiration (not all of them, but many if not most). I worked at a pharmacy once and one of my daily tasks was to go through the ENTIRE stock, ever single solitary pill in all the blister packs and boxes, and throw away the ones that turned one year old by that day. There are VERY few medications, and probably none in pill form, that actually expire that fast

Reminds me so much of my dad….makes me wanna call him. That scene when he’s fixing the sink with the gal….so many of us have lived that same moment.
