DIY Wood Round Sign | Cricut Tutorial | How To Welcome Sign Making

Materials used:
Wood round from Home Depot (only $6!)
150 grit sandpaper
Rustoleum stain in shade “Dark Walnut”
Foam brush - or you can use staining brush or old t-shirt
Mod Podge (spray matte finish)
White permanent vinyl
Transfer tape
Rubbing alcohol
Scraping tool & weeding tool

Hi Jess, I just found your channel. If will, please allow an old man to make a suggestion. When using Pine boards that you want to stain, I'd suggest using a pre-stain conditioner. This only adds about 10-15 minutes per side to your process. But with the pre-stain conditioner, Pine accepts the stain more uniformly, less blotchy. You apply the pre-stain liberally to one side, wait 10 minutes, wipe off the access. Flip it over, then repeat the process for the second side. By the time you are finished with the second side, the first side should be dry enough to stain. You will be happy with the way the board will accept the stain. Frank "Pops" Jenkins

Thanks for the tutorial, new sub here. I recommend using polyacrylic to seal the stain before putting the vinyl on - it helps the vinyl stick.

No Sew Crafts only if the item would be outdoors. Typically I don’t seal the vinyl for indoors.

What kind of paint is the best for these round signs? Do u always stain and then paint? What I'd u want it one solid.color just paint? Do you use acrylic or latex paint

I watched another video where she said to spray your project with a few coats of the modgepodge and let it dry then wipe it down with alcohol and then apply the vinyl. Helps it adhere better.

I don't know the exact tape but any painters tape I could find has worked great! I love the Waverly paint that I get at Walmart. They have so many different colors and finishes! 😍 I particularly love their chalk paint! The transfer tape I use is from Amazon and it's called "Kassa Vinyle Transfer Tape Roll" and it's 12 in. by 12 feet. 🥰

Love this! Do you think regular non-spray mod podge will work? I tried sealing my wood and vinyl design with rustoleum spray top coat and it made my vinyl curl up 😫

Yes! I have two! First, painters tape can be great to use as a guide, but even better yet, I bought myself a mini level from the hardware store and its been GREAT! 🤩

Yes, I did! 2-3 thin layers of mod podge. It’s still holding up perfectly. ☺️❤️ hope that helps!

i knot the ends and staple it to the back! Sometimes i add hot glue as extra reinforcement :)

For a newbie, How do you figure out what size the words are you print?

I measured the wood, about 14 inches, and knew my mat could only cut up to 12 inches - so I just made it as big as I could! My best advice is to always measure what you’re putting the vinyl on and then use the measurements in the design space! Hope this helps. ☺️

Im not sure exactly what you mean. Sometimes i add a circle shape to keep everything in the boarder. Does that answer your question? :)

How do you hang the sign?

For this specific sign, I didn't attach a hanger (customer didn't need it), but when I do, I cut a piece of twine or jute cord to size, knot the ends and staple them to the back. Then I use hot glue to cover the knots and staples for extra security. Hope this helps! ☺️
