For drawboring, you wanted to chamfer the end so that it can go into your offset hole. Alternatively, make the dowel about 1/32" or 1/16" smaller on one end as opposed to the other. What I do is take a 9 grain rasp and chamfer the end I'm driving into the tenon so that it is smaller than the oblong hole your offset creates. And please, please, please don't hold your work in one hand while pushing a chisel toward the hand holding the work. The first time you drive a chisel into your hand will make you understand why. Overall, nicely done! I greatly enjoy watching you make stuff.

Nice bench, and thanks for showing the problems with the dowels. It's good to know that even professionals have problems sometimes. Keep up the good work. I enjoy your builds.

FYI when drawboring you typically go 1/2 radius of the hole offset and make sure the end of the dowel is chamfered, but the problem you had was due to wood selection. You don't want a stiff hardwood for the dowel, you want something straight grained and springy. It'll end up being bent into a shape like a speed bump inside the joint and be trying to straighten itself back out tightening the joint.

exactly. dowels must be able to bend a little without breaking.

In order to use the draw bore technique the dowels need to be slightly tapered on the end.

@anthonyeaton778

The most important part of draw boring is that you rive the dowel pieces and not turn them. There is just too much grain runout otherwise. You also need to taper the ends as others have said. Timber framers most certainly offset drawbores with lots of success. Takes a bit of practise though and eventually you'll get it. I used it on my bench base and was amazed how good it works.

@@anthonyeaton778 No argument that rived dowels are technically better but I have used nothing but turned dowels and never had a problem.

+Jeremy Nance Look for oak pallets or scrap wood. I work in a warehouse and I managed to find oak 4x4s that they use for shipping heavy pipe on trucks and ships, it's called dunnage. Try to find local places that you can check, heavier goods get shipped on oak pallets and they are quite common. I'm sure you already know all this if you've built your own workbench. I guess it's just too remind you... It's a lot of work but it beats paying $20 for oak boards at the big box stores. Also I found a local mill write that sells oak for supper cheap. An even better alternative. Hope this helps to motivate you. 😄

@@wattscreates1977 Thanks Adam! I’ve found lots of great wood in pallets, I even made a nice spear gun out of pallet mahogany. I’m waiting/watching for some nice maple for a new work bench because I want a really tight grain. Never underestimate pallet wood!

Just curious why you didn’t use the fence and a spacer block to establish the location of the shoulders on all the tenons. It looked like you eyeballed them and that caused you to have to clean the shoulders with a chisel.

PVA wood glue swells up the joints, making it harder for the dowels to go in. Try using epoxy to lubricate the chamfered dowels

If you run into issues with the default sawstop throat plate not being zero clearance enough for small cuts (non-dado), I found that a video by Rob Cosman where infinity tools has a zero clearance insert replacement. I just ordered one for my sawstop saw as I had issues where some smaller pieces wanted to fall down in the slot after the riving knife. A while back I made a super heavy 4x4 carving bench with pegs and a different type of cross locking timber framing joint. I didn't even need glue with the pegs and I drilled straight holes. The joints didnt need glue either as it held so tight, and with the pegs I doubt mine will ever come apart either, and so far it is super stable and no racking at all. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fXqWc5SjjcSjjsk Good video as always :)
