Thank you. This is exactly what I was looking for. I needed to know how to push the vinyl down in between the spokes. All the professional wrappers I’ve seen only seem to be wrapping the face of the flat spokes which is super easy but mine have curved spokes and a curve in between the spokes. Thanks.

Exactly. Been wrapping vehicles for 6 years daily with 3M vinyl and if you apply it right and if the owner takes care of the foil, it could last more than 5 years. Easy!
@stpaulmercantile10 жыл бұрын
Great video. I'm surprised how many bad comments there are about using vinyl. Good 3M vinyl can last 5+ years on a daily driver, and longer on a car not left out in the sun or driven in bad weather. It's relatively cheap and not that hard to do, provided you watch a couple dozen youtube videos by the pros. And if you really mess up a piece, just pull it off and do it over again. I bought a bunch of small samples on ebay in order to see how the colors looked on my car and also to experiment to see how much body prep was required before wrapping. I'm working on the car now and it's not as hard as I initially thought.

@JettSteele10 жыл бұрын
When heating the vinyl and pressing it into those curves you should be using your finger and soapy water or spit, not a rag. That rag can stick to the hot vinyl and leave lent or rip it. Also don't make any cuts until it's applied all over your selected area (including all curves and recesses. If you make a relief cut a relief cut in the middle like in this video it will prevent you from being able to heat it again because it'll expand and further the cut. Also for all you folk who don't do this professionally, make sure you're using a brand new blade before each cut to prevent jagged edges from dull cuts. They also didn't mention cleaning the surface extremely well with 1/2 Denatured Alcohol and water before application to prevent future failing of the vinyl and prevent dust speckles showing through. Just tips for installs from a wrapper.

People have to realise the longevity doesn't exist on wheels and glued on vinyl. Add in road salts and water mixed with spilt fuels from trucks and all other crap on the road fired up into your wheels and it's gotta be no shock that they will start to fail especially when grit and stuff chips at it. With the cost of the vinyl being less than £10 especially if you order it directly from china and wait 2 weeks for it to arrive, you then realise it's really only meant to be for a short period of time. Sure, you could add 4 coats of lacquer afterwards to give it some extra protection and more longevity but that makes removing the vinyl a little tougher. Things like this are great for shows and such where you will remove it within a week or even a few months and lets face it, it's not costing more than a few pounds and your time to do it. People who are expecting a lifetime good look are going to be disappointed. Great video, could be more detailed but inspires none the less. Btw, if you are feeling creative, you don't have to do one colour or flat non-patterned.... also, use a brand new very sharp blade and always let IT cut the vinyl while the blade is riding flush where applicable.. otherwise it will look butchered.
@portabuddy8 жыл бұрын

I think the vinyl that looks like it's glossing only appears that way because it's shrinking and stretching. I think whatever is stuck to the actual wheel will remain matte because it can't stretch and shrink, since it is adhered to a surface, i think.
@TMundohere6 жыл бұрын
Sunil P I have worked with matte vinyl before and if its heated too much it melts and glosses over. I'm guessing you have to watch the amount of heat used.

Very durable. Hand wash only. Vinyl wraps now have UV finishes so can last up to 7yrs on garaged vehicles, YMMV. Tires are different - flat tires, curbs, garage maintenance, etc all introduce opportunities to scuff - but bang for buck, it's the way to go.

@Orcinus19676 жыл бұрын
@Dan Druft I've never wrapped or Plasti dipped anything, but I just watched a video on Plasti Dip and it does NOT take 5 minutes. They suggest several coats. 1 can per wheel. And use the whole can. 1 coat does not take 5 minutes to dry. "Allow 10 -30 minutes dry time (dry to the touch) before applying additional coats. A minimum of 5 coats is recommended for best performance and easy removal. " If you want it to peel off without being a pain in the ass it takes at least 4 coats. And you should wear a respirator, so plan on buying one with a proper filter cartridge on it. Then there are the adhesion promoters and clear coats and whatnot to put over it. Doing Plasti Dip properly takes more than 5 minutes. And, if done properly, it looks great and lasts. They say vinyl lasts. It also has to be applied properly, not over heated/ overstretched, and stretched from the right direction. And, now they even have ceramic coating (very expensive) to protect the vinyl. Plus you need to protect vinyl just as you would paint, with wax or whatever, to protect it from the sun. In any case, plan on hand washing your car and not using harsh chemicals with either product. High pressure washing is probably not recommended with either as well.

Plastidip is just a type of spray vinyl(your's is a physical vinyl). The amount of coats equal to this, is probably around 5 or so decent coats. I have done the wheels on my GTI in about 7 or so clean coats. Years laters and they are still holding together. Really this depends on the person applying it. Even if this is incorrectly applied, It will be easily ruined. I do like the concept of this though. Cool video.

Interesting approach to a wheel color change. To say this method is faster than quickly Plasti-dipping or even doing a low-prep paint job on them is debatable, but it's neat nonetheless.

Looks pretty sick man. Thats a major mod for only a few dollars and a little time. But what happens come time for new rubber? I imagine that those tire machines are very unforgiving to the vinyl around the lip of your rims, or am I wrong?

I like it. Loved the red Honda badge against the matte black.

it just means having multiple layers of paint, so if he was painting the rims, he would paint a base coat first, wait a while, put on another "coat" of paint, wait some more, do it again, etc. It comes from the word "coating", like "I coated my wheels matte black", just means (painting) a layer.

I love the look, and did it on my 911 wheels. Similar 5 spokes, but spokes are rounded. The only problem I have is keeping the vinyl from popping in the outside corners of the rim, at the acute angle when I drive and the breaks heat the wheels up. I ended up slitting the corners, releasing the pressure, and carefully putting a patch. I spoke with someone at 3M and they say the vinyl has a max stretch of 30%. How well did your wheels age?

i agree if youre doing it in matte colours, but as far as gloss goes you can only really get a satin finish with plastidip
@jeffyjames2k1111 жыл бұрын
not if you do it right, actually it doesnt flake at all... its rubber paint. If you clean properly before coating rim it holds up a long time and will only peel off when you want to peel it off and change or get rid of it.

Could you wrap the inside of the barrel as well? Perhaps place the seems behind the spokes?

Yes. Chrome vinyl is usually brittle(mylar like space blankets). Solid colors and metallics are your best bet.

you should just spray paint it, you'll get a more durable coat that you can actually wash. The alloy wheels will get abrasives on them brake filings, road dust etc which will tear the vinyl as you wash the wheels. If you just spray paint it, and do a good job it will last as long as the car. Failing that you should use that dreaded plastidip. it leaves a surface similar to vinyl but is better to use on those crevices and stuff

Nice job.. I think I would still go powder coated ..it will hold up better .. I would be pissed if I spent all that time rapping it and it pealed in a few weeks or months

I bet it chips away from gravel, and the heat has to effect the adhesive. Paint stripper and spray paint still seams cheaper.

How?! You make it look so Easy. Does anyone have tips on how to get the inside of the corners

Honestly this was long ago. But it's not hard. Gentle pressure and heat. It will conform

Good video wheels look great, but I do preferpowder coating them. There's a shop over in LA that sells paint for cars and they'll will do you personal spray can for you with original paint. So imma do that with my IS350 WHEELS in chromium Black
@portabuddy12 жыл бұрын
that, and you can peel it back to oem quicker then painting them silver again.

You have to give it at least 5+ coats. mine have 7 and I power wash my car every week and 8 months later still intact so far.

i think that that is probably for a full car wrap where the wind could catch an edge of it and start to rip a whole sheet off.

Well imagine it.. Stuff stays on perfectly. Friend of mine vinyl wrapped his 20's and they've been pretty for about a year and a half now!

Sometimes it’s quicker to do by paint, if you have the time and patience.

He painted the entire car in plastidip flat black, and the only thing it wouldn't hold on to, is the chrome wheels. He has a C5 and I don't see how its relevant, considering what I said is personal experience. It held on my chrome mesh great, just not on the wheels on his C5 Vette, and not on the wheels on mine either once I'm above 130mph. It literally unraveled an inch to two inches all the way around the wheels.

Pretty cool but I'd still spray. Think it's easier and faster and still peel off when done.

dipping just takes the fun out of it. doing it this way is harder yeah but more rewarding and fun
