In this video, I show you how I made a super easy DIY art roll / pencil roll / pencil wrap / colored pencil case. This thing has SO MANY NAMES! I even rebranded it with a totally new name, which I am sure will stick. ;-) I made myself an Art Roll for many anticipated outside excursions with my art supplies - just as soon as the rain stops falling in the Pacific Northwest! Also, I have a big order of new Inktense pencils on the way, and they need a place to be. Necessity is the mother of invention, so they say; I think this is my favorite creative idea in at least two weeks.
Thank you for clicking on this description! At this very beginner phase of my “content creation” experience, it is very exciting just to imagine that people watch my videos. I do a metaphoric backflip for each new subscriber. I know, I’m new. (346 subscribers at the moment I shared this video)
I mentioned Melanie Chadwick’s art roll, which is made by Peg & Awl. Here’s a link to her video where she tells all about it: • SKETCHING MATERIALS ev...
I really enjoy Melanie’s content and I think you will, too.
I mentioned Sandi Hester’s art roll, which she designed and her mother sometimes sews and puts for sale. Here’s a link to her video where she tells all about the design process and how her art roll works: • Special Art Collaborat...
Sandi is vibrant and engaging, just like her work.

In this video I presented:
Kam Snaps: amzn.to/43OCviq
With a satisfying “pop,” this plastic snap holds together whatever it is you’ve attached it to. These come in a myriad of delightful colors.
Bias Tape: amzn.to/3KTo4RF
This link is for ½” double fold polyester-cotton blend bias tape. For one of my art rolls, I used ½”, for the other, I used 1”. However, I made my own with 100% cotton fabric. To learn how to do this, I suggest you check out Made Everyday. Dana does a beautiful job of clearly explaining how to make bias tape. She taught me. • SEW DIY BIAS TAPE, sin...
Twill Tape: amzn.to/3KXqbnH
I used twill tape on the tie for my second Art Roll. Twill tape could also be used in lieu of bias tape, I think.
Some of my favorite art books:
Breaking the Rules of Watercolor by Shirley Trevena: amzn.to/3IoJLZL
Taking Risks With Watercolor by Shirley Trevena: amzn.to/3SMqCV8
Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards: amzn.to/3kIwiDd
What I use to film and edit my videos:
Small, flexible tripod with screw-on grippy attachment that holds my GoPro: amzn.to/3mEEGUU
Desk mount device that I use with the screw-on grippy attachment that came with my tripod - the desk mount (in combination with the grippy attachment) holds my GoPro 18-inches above my table: amzn.to/3L81XbK
Blue yeti microphone: amzn.to/3Fw1IE7
Lightning to USB Camera Adaptor - this is what I use to connect the blue yeti microphone to my ipad for voice over editing: amzn.to/3ZNxuUE
GoPro Hero10: amzn.to/3TFnvyU
It takes some getting used to, but for filming on hikes it is much better than using my iPhone.
