Today’s video is all about MAPCRUNCHING! How did I not know about this until right now? It’s just like urban sketching, but you can do it at home and you can jump to any location in the world that google street view has recorded. How exciting. I felt like I was sitting on the side of the road, studying the landscapes of places I’ve never been to.
I show you two locations that I have watercolored in my sketchbook using images found on mapcrunch.com. One is from Flanders and the other is from Slovenia. Of course, I don’t make a true-to-the-reference-photo painting. Rather, I take artistic license to change what I want, moving around houses and trees willy-nilly and changing the colors in the landscape to suit my palette.
Thank you for clicking on this description! At this very beginner phase of my “content creation” experience, it is very exciting just to imagine that people watch my videos. I do a metaphoric backflip for each new subscriber. I know, I’m new. (360 subscribers at the moment I shared this video)
There are amazon affiliate links sprinkled around in here. These are items that I have found to bring joy to my life and I hope they do the same for you. If you click on the link and actually buy something (anything!) from amazon, I will receive a small commission at no extra cost to you - and that helps to support this channel.
Materials I used in this video:
Arches cold press watercolor paper: amzn.to/41cwLNC
Stabilo pencil, black: amzn.to/40cZjG8
Pin Fineliner Drawing Pen: amzn.to/42romGz
---
Favorite supplies that usually appear in my videos:
1. A porcelain plate or tray from the goodwill makes a great palette. So does a plastic lid from a yogurt container.
2. A used talenti ice cream cup is perfect for swish water; also a great way to buy art supplies when you “have to” eat the contents first.
3. A cheap Robert Simmons Expressions brush is perfect. The one I’m using here is an E85 Round, size 12. You can buy one at Blick Art.
4. I use a glass bottle that used to contain facial toner for my spray bottle. The toner was expensive, but it has a very pretty label. The spray is a fine mist and the bottle is the perfect size for using at home and also for taking out on location.
Some of my favorite art books:
Breaking the Rules of Watercolor by Shirley Trevena: amzn.to/3IoJLZL
Taking Risks With Watercolor by Shirley Trevena: amzn.to/3SMqCV8
Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards: amzn.to/3kIwiDd
-----
What I use to film and edit my videos:
Small, flexible tripod with screw-on grippy attachment that holds my GoPro: amzn.to/3mEEGUU
Desk mount device that I use with the screw-on grippy attachment that came with my tripod - the desk mount (in combination with the grippy attachment) holds my GoPro 18-inches above my table: amzn.to/3L81XbK
Blue yeti microphone: amzn.to/3Fw1IE7
Lightning to USB Camera Adaptor - this is what I use to connect the blue yeti microphone to my ipad for voice over editing: amzn.to/3ZNxuUE
GoPro Hero10: amzn.to/3TFnvyU
It takes some getting used to, but for filming on hikes it is much better than using my iPhone.

From childhood, all my life. I always wanted things I created to be in 3s. Even with photographs. I never wanted subjects to be in the center and/or have something else interesting in the same part of the image. One photo in particular that I remember had my brother in it but I made him peek out from some flowering bushes. 😂😂😂😁

You seem to know what you’re doing. Nice harmonious colors. At around 2:55 you ran your hand down the left side of the left page of your layout, and it almost sounded like sandpaper. It made a cool ASMR sound! What causes that? Is it what happens after a watercolor dries? What size of Arches cold pressed watercolor paper did you use? I hope you don’t mind such nit-picky questions, but I really like that sound and would like to be able to achieve it! 😁

Thank you for your kind comments! :-) Your questions are easy: the book I made is about 6-in x 8-in, so the 2-page spread is 12-in wide x 8-in tall. The paper is Arches 156 lb cold press. I bought it as a whole roll (around $200) and then I cut pieces off the roll as I need them. I love that it’s thicker than the regular 140 lb weight of most watercolor papers (although I use those as well). As to the sound… I don’t think the watercolors factor in. It’s probably just the paper and perhaps my hands were a bit rough from spending time in my garden! :-) I went back and listened, and it IS a great sound!

I'm wondering if you have, or will have, a store somewhere with, e.g., the calendar you plan to make and/or other products or prints with your images?

Awww, thanks for this encouraging question! I don’t have a store, or merchandise, yet. But I think that direction is in my future… :-)

Yes! Some people used it that way. I think it must have been such a comfort for people who lived in places with serious lockdowns. Here in Oregon, we were never prevented from leaving our houses and I’m really grateful for the daily walks we went on.

What brand of watercolors are you using? They have such a lovely earthy muted look to them. I love the style of this painting.

Thank you for your kind words! The brands I generally use are Winsor & Newton and M. Graham. The specific colors are written out on that little palette card, but I didn’t notate the brand next to the color names. I try to purchase “single pigment” colors as often as possible, but the yellows are blends.

Hi Michelle, welcome and thank you for subscribing! :-) Yes, I stitched that book together with a Coptic binding and used some 156# cold press. One day, I’ll have to share what it looks like to buy a whole big roll of arches paper and cut off pieces for different projects.

Think Natasha Newton is in Suffolk or Surrey. The Lizard is further south. I only know as I follow all three also and love their work. Your watercolour is lovely. I am much further up the country in what we call gods own country Yorkshire.

Hi Tracy! Thank you for this comment! After seeing it, I looked up a map of counties in the UK (for the first time ever, possibly)… and woah, they do live far apart. I think I made an assumption after hearing that Natasha had travelled to Cornwall and met Melanie in person - I thought, oh, they must not be far apart. LOL.

I really enjoyed watching this! What do you call that tape you put around the edges? And I never thought of using a stick! How brilliant! I am very new to watercolors so I am just learning.

Hi Sarah, thank you for your kind comments and question. :-) I used washi tape to make that clean line around the borders. You can use painters’ tape, too, but I find the colors of that to be distracting. Some art stores also sell white tape for the same purpose.

Lots of neighbors here in the comments :-) thank you, I especially like your incorporation of the Stabilo. I always think of that pencil is too saturated and too black to use with color. Great way to mute down bright colors for landscapes.… Also provides a great foundation making it easy to see.

Thank you for your kind comment! :-) I found the Stabilo after noticing that I was always using my black watercolor pencils down to the nib. For sure it’s so much more pigmented than the other pencils, which is most of its delight.

I'm a bit hard of hearing and I was SO sure you were saying 'stubby little pencil' instead of Stabilo until about 17 minutes in. Lovely vid with or without my misinterpretation!!

LOL, it’s funny but also perhaps that’s how they named the pencil “Stabilo.” I think you’ve cracked something here! :-) Thank you for your kind comment.
