I am a long time epoxy user, very fond of experimentation to test the limitations of my chemicals. After nearly 20 years I just now picked up my first bottle of uv resin, and I find that it may not be as good for jewelry making as one might think. It's really really easy to dissolve, in rubbing alcohol. Also house cleaning supplies (pine sol mr clean, tilex) and shampoo will make it cloudy by eating the surface off of it. If you want your jewelry to last long it should probably be glazed or fully coated in regular epoxy resin. Ooooone more thing! Don't use clear nail polish, mod podge, triple thick, or diamond glaze to glaze your jewelry pieces, those things are not meant to be worn against the skin, they will flake off after a very short time, especially if they are banged around a good bit.

Hi Savannah, I've always used epoxy resin but I believe UV resin creates a harder, more scratch resistant surface for jewelry. My question is, is it a low viscosity like water? Because I coat the top of my jewelry for a domed finish and wonder if uv resin will stay on the top or try to run over the edges.

Hi! Thank you for making this video! I was just wondering what resin would you recommend for using on sneakers, and if it’ll stick to the fabric on sneakers?
@DIYAlex

It won’t work for sneakers because the fabric or material moves too much and epoxy and UV resin are hard set so it would crack.

Just started doing resin a few weeks ago and I’m pleased that my decision to buy a respirator and the appropriate filters was the right one for me. I got the 3M 6200 half face mask + multi vapor / gas filters (P100), if you still need the advice. No smell gets through at all. EDIT: I think it was $30 for the mask and $40 for the filters. Small price to pay for your health, if you ask me.

@DIYAlex
@DIYAlex 4 жыл бұрын
You're welcome! I would avoid putting UV resin on anything that has to bend. So if your phone case has to bend to put your phone in it, UV resin is so rigid that it will probably crack when you go to put the phone in it.

@DIYAlex
@DIYAlex 4 жыл бұрын
The experience of one person doesn't mean that's the experience everyone will have. If epoxy was highly toxic you'd see a lot more issues and death due to using it than you do now. Remember that epoxy has been used for years in other industries, not just by crafters to make tumblers.

@@DIYAlex What...are you talking about? That doesn't make sense. There are lots of cases of people who've been exposed to Epoxy and dealing with serious health risks. Very informative and useful video, thank you so much for all the tips. I've been using AB resin for about four years to put a thick coat on top small flat acrylic pieces and the part of having to measure and mix it properly is not my favorite and I also the many hours it takes to dry completely is always against my need to have the pieces ready in a small amount of time.. I've also had some issues sometimes with humidity. Certain level of humidity in the air (like during the rainy season) has caused the resin not to curate completely and it stays sticky ruining the pieces because there's nothing you can do. I figured out a way to control and prevent this by putting the pieces inside a plastic container with hermetic lid and with a 2cm layer at the bottom of thsee tiny round pellets that are used to trap humidity. I place the acrylic pieces directly on this layer of pellets and since I've been doiing it the pieces curate perfectly well. I want to try UV resin but what I've knowns so far about has just left me all confused. Some say it's perfect for jewelry, others say it's not, Some say it is crystal clear, some say it's yellowish... and the worst I've read is here in your comments which say that it easily turns cloudy with alcohol, soap or some other cleaning supplies, so now I don't know if I should try it or not. I believe I'll give it a try so I may see by myself how it works. I wanted to buy it from your Amazon store buy I was dissapointed to find it's not available. Any other place where that brand that you recommend may be found?

@DIYAlex
@DIYAlex 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I'm not sure how to measure the strength of it. It lasts really well if you take good care of it. If the mold is clear and the UV lamp can get all the way through the mold then you can do it. If not, then you'll need to use epoxy.

Which would you recommend for sealing shrinky dink charms? (just putting a layer on top)
@DIYAlex
@DIYAlex 4 жыл бұрын
I honestly haven't done a shrinky dink with UV resin or epoxy before so I can't say for sure! I would think UV resin would work great, but like I said, I haven't tried it myself so I can't guarantee that!

I have a question. Do you recommend Table top epoxy resin and hardner for jewelry making? As beads. Charms. Pendants and some small wooded pieces? Also does it polish and clear very well?
@DIYAlex
@DIYAlex 3 жыл бұрын
I typically use Pro Marine epoxy, but I recommend Amazing Clear Cast Alumilite for beginners. I have never polished epoxy, it usually dries clear and shiny on it's own. When using molds be sure that the mold is glossy inside so the end result will be shiny.

I’m working with a good quality uv resin. A lot of the times when I’m doing my jewelry, the top looks hardened but the resin that’s touching the mold is still sticky. I resin in layers. Not sure what I’m doing wrong.
@DIYAlex
@DIYAlex 3 жыл бұрын
It sounds like your molds may be too dense for UV resin and the light can't penetrate the mold. If you're able to pop it out of the mold, try curing it in the sun the rest of the way.

@DIYAlex
@DIYAlex 3 жыл бұрын
You could us either epoxy or UV resin if the molds you have are clear. If the molds are not clear, use epoxy. UV lamps need to be 50 watts or more to cure UV resin.

Thank you so much for clarifying so many of my questions! I have been searching for answers to my questions for days. You answered all of them except for two, all in one video. The only questions I have now... Maybe you might know. 🤷‍♀️ Is there truly a clear, UV resistant substance that I could use on an outdoor wood sign and could I cover said material with polyurethane for extra protection?
@DIYAlex

You’re welcome! If you’re sealing the surface under your vinyl, you don’t need a coating over top your permanent vinyl. Coatings over top the vinyl can cause peeling if it seeps underneath the edges.

Hi there. I am looking at making jewelery using gel nail polish to make jewelery (painting onto a ring blank) then just using the UV resin to set the design. Or do I need to do a layer of resin first and sandwich everything? Thankyou :)
@DIYAlex
@DIYAlex 3 жыл бұрын
I have never used gel nail polish so I can't say for sure, but there shouldn't be a need for a base layer of UV resin underneath everything.

I would get a stronger UV lamp (50 watts or more), or try a new brand of UV resin.

Does either one of them on acrylic blanks is less likely to “spill over”?
@DIYAlex
@DIYAlex 4 жыл бұрын
I would say either of them are equally likely to spill over. I usually don't have issues if I'm careful and go slow. If it does spill over, just sand it down and it will be fine.
