Version one of the box worked great, but one of the PRs failed. Version 2 is here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jYixgo2wrMiVeK8. Version 2 uses a single PR that has a lot more xmax, it sounded great and it's working just fine. I have to do some additional upgrades before I can get the final box fiberglased and installed. Your videos gave me the idea to drill a hole in my kicker passive radiator and added a small bolt and some washers to it and I was able to lower the tuning frequency from 49 to 39hz. It actually sounds WAY better. Before it was very loud in a very narrow range now it’s pretty loud all over and plays way lower. I wish kicker would post there radiator ts perimeters!

You can easily drill out spot welds on the front wall of cubby hole and remove. That will give you more options
@DIYAudioGuy
@DIYAudioGuy 4 жыл бұрын
The thought has crossed my mind! I have had the carpet out. The front wall of the cubby hole does not appear to have any structural purpose. If this project does not give me the bass I crave I might give that a shot, after that the only choice is to toss the back seat or make a blow-through. I need the truck to depreciate a bit more before I can stomach a blow-through.

How much of a difference would it have made if you replaced one of those woofers with a passive radiator in that pre fabbed box ?

For the most part they act just like an expensive port. The only real reason to use them is if you don't have room for a port.

@@DIYAudioGuy yep you see passive radiators on alot of your higher end home speakers👍
@DIYAudioGuy
@DIYAudioGuy 4 жыл бұрын
That never made any sense to me. You've got plenty of room in most home speakers to build a massive port. I suppose they're trying to avoid port noise or they are trying to make the speaker and look more expensive so they can command a higher price.

Regarding the internal box volume, how did you do it? Some say, it needs the volume of a ported box minus the port, and some say it has to be same size as if it was sealed. What was your experience?
@DIYAudioGuy
@DIYAudioGuy 4 жыл бұрын
Anytime you build an enclosure you need to account for the volume taken up by the port, the speakers, any internal bracing, etc. This is all true no matter if you're going with ported or sealed (obviously a sealed box would not have a port) or passive radiator. In this case the final volume of the box would need to take into account both the active driver and the passive cones. In this case the gross internal volume was 1.75 cubic inches, I have not taken the opportunity to calculate the net volume after backing out the airspace that the subwoofer and the passives take up.

@@DIYAudioGuy Thanks so much for your reply. I have used the Bass Box Pro software for my boxes. I've built sealed, ported and bandpass boxes, and yes, I've taken to the account the volume of the cones and ports (if ported). On one of my cars, I have 2 JL 12w7's on a ported box. Its loud. But I want something different now. This time I wanna go with a Passive Radiator. Bought me a 15" one from Parts Express, and will use a 12" sub for it. Wanted to go with JL 12W3, but that one only comes as a SVC, so need one that's a dual 4ohm. So to refer my question again, let's say, a sealed box for a certain subwoofer is .75 cubic ft. Same subwoofer in a ported box has a volume of 1.25 cubic ft (plus port volume) If I use the same subwoofer with a Passive Radiator, do I use the sealed volume size (.75 cft.), or the ported size (1.25) ? Thank you
@DIYAudioGuy
@DIYAudioGuy 4 жыл бұрын
I understand what you mean now. A passive radiator is just an expensive and complicated port. So you would go with the 1.75 cubic foot box. I've never used Bass Box Pro, but you should be able to model a passive radiator in that software.

@@rumruumm bb6 does allow for passive radiator designs. you simply enter the radiators parameters just like the driver. then start playing with the box size and plot it. then start adding weights to the radiator, you do this by adding the amount of the weight you want to the mms parameter of the radiator. buy yourself a small digital scale and go to a hardware store and buy a bunch of different size washers. when you are doing final testing/tuning, simply leave the radiators inverted so you don't need to remove them to change out weights.(some radiators do allow adding weight from the front) some common sense is needed tho, you dont want to go adding 400grams of mass to a cheap 8" radiator. there are guidelines that i can't recall atm but google will help .

@@DIYAudioGuy unless you run an external port. ports don't have to be inside the box. people either don't realize that or tend to forget it.
