Completely agree! Mine didn’t turn out “perfect”, but that was more due to the lumber, definitely not due to the instructions! One thing that I would recommend is to do the process as the video shows: In the SAME order! I did the cuts as well as all of the drilling, countersink, safety pilot holes, etc. at one time as well as sanding the dowels. I did this because I knew that I was having back surgery in the next few days and I wanted everything to be ready to go when I felt like finally hanging the shelves... I had to go back and re-do a bunch of things due to this...(again- totally MY fault 100%). But the biggest pain was that I didn’t sand down the dowels enough...”lightly sanding” them was NOT what I considered lightly! Took way more sanding than I would have thought to get the actual shelves to easily slide on and off! So, if you decide not to do in order of the video/instructions...be forewarned!

Jessica MacMurtrie to hold the shelf in place once mounted. With woodworking, oftentimes you do a lot of construct/deconstruct before you have your final product. In this case, you want to have all holes drilled before you stain/varnish.

Hi friends, if you intend on using the saw yourself please do NOT use gloves when sawing... Gloves are prone to getting caught in the blade and dragging your fingers and hand into the blade... So go ahead and saw like the gentleman did in the video, just go slow and be careful and do it without gloves
@jefgir10975 жыл бұрын
This is counterintuitive, but it is safer not to use gloves when using rotative Power tools. Good reminder.

Yaaaaaa...my pointer finger is still healing from a nasty, gruesome cut as the saw DID pull my glove into it. I thought for sure I lost my finger at the knuckle, but I didn't. It's going to be healing and tender for a loooooong time. Funny thing is, just about 2 minutes into the first use of my new table saw I was pondering if gloves would be a hazard...Um, Experiment over.

Excellent tip. I actually knew a guy in high school that had two of his fingers taken off cause he wore gloves with a wood chipper. Funny thing is, he drew better than I could

Supporting lumber under with a scrap to prevent sagging while cutting is a great idea and oh I would have cut the lumber than try to drill dowel holes on both sides and end up not aligning them properly. Great job man

Very good method for making floating shelves!!! After a lot of research I decided on this method and it worked great. A couple of things to keep in mind, my home is a older home and has lath and plaster walls so they are not 100% flat and true so I had to do some minor sanding of the attachment bracket, secondly drill the holes before cutting to 1 1/2", I forgot and was a bit of a pain. I ended up making the 1/2" dowels a bit longer, they extended 4" into the shelf. I went with a routered ogee edging on the top of the shelves to get rid of the rounded edge of the 2X6. I plan on making more shelves.

If you are wondering how much weight these shelves can hold, don't bother looking through the comments. Just went digging and there is literally over 200 comments asking about the weight and he never answered a single one of them.

It depends on the dowel thickness and Wood type. I'd guess this shelf could hold 50 or so lbs

The dowels are probably fine as long as the joints are nice and tight, so it probably would mostly rely on your screws.

Oh, one tip: To cut the stock lengthwise, you could clamp on a 1" x 6" as a guide or maybe a long piece of aluminum. 4:57

Well the 1x6 would work for his saw but I'm sure not all circ saws are 1 1/2" from the blade to the outside of the metal base.

I wasn't sure where you were going with it when you drilled the hole for the dowel the same depth as the dowel, until you ripped it down. Neat idea, and it seems like it works quite well!

@macbeasty5 жыл бұрын
Floating shelves are a design aesthetic and are not meant to support hundreds of pounds. Thus, these floating shelves will be just fine with a pair of good wall anchors. With that being said, it's easier to fill screw holes than anchor holes so I'll usually find a stud for my applications.
