Incredible job Jimmy. Paint some toothpicks different shades of brown and then glue the lichen on them. Most will never be visible but you can use them to attach the lichen a little easier. Just an idea.

I need to get one of those layout lightning storm kits but build a storm with a tornado. When I was in high school I built a tornado machine thingy that used a small fan to generate the vortex and dry ice to make the funnel cloud visible once it got going and I used a tesla coil for lightning. Maybe I could combine all everything into a cool diorama.

That's a great looking mountain, Jimmy! Lichen has gotten a bad rep since the advent of ground foam, but you have dramatically demonstrated how you can make lichen look great simply by mixing several similar shades of green. Nice job.

Not gonna critique this as it's cool either-way, I just know that if I was to attempt this myself,I'd need a 5 story building, that's at least 300ft long, and it'd go from the baseboard of the railroad, up to 50,000 scale feet. From the tornado suction vortexes, to the wall cloud (if I decide to model the classic lowered wall cloud), updraft tower, overshooting top, and anvil. What I just described is a supercell thunderstorm. The easiest type to model realistically (at least to me) because you don't have to worry that much about the more complicated aspects of meteorology, as they're typically isolated. It's this kind of thing that made me come back. Not the "greatest hobby" by any means, but one that blends my love for geology, meteorology, heavy equipment, and transportation.

As someone who wants to get into the hobby what do you suggest N scale or HO I have about a 15ft x 14ft area

I’m just going to talk about this a little bit, but it really depends on what you want to do. Does that mean that’s the size of your room, or do you have a larger area like a basement where you can build in? You don’t need to make an island style layout, it can be an around the outside of the space/room like a shelf layout. I have a room I’ll be building in that is 8x10. I can obviously put more N scale than HO and I own more N scale stuff, but more space means I’ll want to do more stuff. As well, I’m going to hand built turnouts, and they’re easier to make in HO. I also don’t need as many turnouts overall in HO as I would in N scale. This helps me keep it a bit simpler. Also, I’m doing a last-mile layout and it’ll be purely for switching, and HO I feel will be a lot easier to switch compared to N scale. I like switching on my N scale layout, but I’d rather it be larger.

I have a room slightly smaller. Main level is around the perimeter with a pull out section for access. Upper level is N-scale folded dog bone double track. This has a mountainous background with some Z-scale mining and timber operations, giving the impression of being far up the mountain side. At the highest mountain location, I do have the thunder effect, as in this video. I might try some poli-fil cloud effects, as seen here. The HO & N-scale are completely separate.

In this video he goes over a lot of landscaping details including the ground cover and bushes. He’s also got a benchwork video from a couple years ago that could be valuable. You can also use shelving brackets that mount to the wall and attach something to that. Watch through Jimmy’s videos. There’s a lot of that covered that you should be able to find by just looking around.
