Squeaky Clutch Pedal Fix | Honda S2000

Hey everyone! Does this sound familiar? Today I’m going to show you how to fix a squeaky clutch pedal on a Honda S2000.
Difficulty: Easy
Estimated time: 1 hour
Tools necessary:
14mm wrench
Jack + jackstands
Sandpaper (800 grit) - amzn.to/2gtbUkf
High Temp Urea Grease - amzn.to/2x0WTAS
Steps.
1. The first thing you want to do is get your car on jackstands.
2. With the car on jackstands, get under the car and locate the clutch slave cylinder. It will be attached to the transmission. Remove the two 12mm bolts holding the clutch slave cylinder in place with a wrench. As you pull the clutch slave cylinder off take a look at the spherical end of the rod and you’ll likely notice that it doesn’t have any grease at all. This is the source of the squeaking sound.
3. With the clutch slave cylinder removed, pull off the rubber boot and rod by prying the base of the boot away. When the rubber boot is removed the cylinder inside the clutch slave cylinder might have a tendency to push itself out and leak brake fluid. In order to avoid this I propped the clutch slave cylinder against the front lower brace like so. Other people recommend using tape or a zip tie to keep the cylinder in place. If the cylinder does end up falling out you’ll have to bleed the clutch fluid, but that isn’t a big deal if you’re already doing this.
4. Now wipe down the rod and then polish the end of the rod using some fine sandpaper, I used 800 grit.
5. Once the rod is polished you want to grease everything. Use your finger to apply some high temp urea grease to the cup that holds the end of rod onto the clutch fork. Then apply some high temp urea grease to the inside of the rubber boot and the end of the rod.
6. Reinstall the rubber boot onto the rod and install the both of them onto the clutch slave cylinder. This can be quite tricky with all the grease. I found the easiest way to do this was to extend the base of the boot with my fingers and attach it to the clutch slave cylinder while using my palm to compress the clutch slave cylinder.
7. Now it’s time to reinstall the clutch slave cylinder. I would recommend using one arm to compress the slave cylinder and using your other hand to immediately thread one of the 12mm bolts as soon as possible. Finish install the clutch slave cylinder by tightening the two 12mm bolts that hold it to the transmission with a wrench. Torque them to 16 ft-lbs.
8. Lastly, get the car off jackstands, lower it back down to the ground, and enjoy your silent clutch pedal.

Adding another comment to spread another possible fix to the issue: so a couple weeks ago I had a squeaky and grinding pedal. Turns out the clutch master was leaking so I replaced that, while I was there I serviced the slave piston but I still had the squeaking after servicing it and the pedal had a slight stick to it and I know there wasn’t air in the system because I spent 30 min bleeding the clutch over and over again. After lots of listening and research I found a TSB and the clutch fork on the throwout bearing was dry of grease so I removed the clutch fork (which just pulls out) and applied the high temp urea grease to the fork and throwout bearing and the sound is gone and my pedal feels great. So a tip if servicing the slave doesn’t work then remove the clutch fork and grease the fork and throwout bearing

I took off the boot and applied grease on the t bearing and fork using a long screw driver and it helped a lot too.

Honda specifically calls for 1) Urea Grease on the ball part of the slave cylinder push rod and 2) brake assembly lube (PN 41211-py5-305) for the boot and slave cylinder rod. Must be a reason, could possibly be the urea grease would break down the rubber boot over time...maybe someone reading this knows. Thumbs up to the video.

My Honda CRV clutch was making a horrible noise so I put dustsheet in the footwell and liberally sprayed up all around the clutch mechanism so now no noise. In the CRV the spring at the top has a plastic sheath and it eventually begins to get raunchy so every six months or so I give mine a soaking

I'm going to do this fix to my 02 s2k. I want to lube the fork as well at the same time, but I'm honestly not clear how to do that, and precisely what and where to lube it. Any pictures or more detailed description of that would be really helpful.

You’ll find out pretty soon if it’s not in the cup. But yeah I try and insert it into the boot as straight as possible.

I reinstalled incorrectly and punched a hole into the clutch fork cup plastic when I depressed the clutch. Should I be concerned? The area of damage can be found at 1:37 (there are two black rectangles and it punched a hole through the bottom one at 1:37 (the one closest to the front of the car). I also redid my incorrect reinstall and needless to say, it is great with no noise but not sure about the hole in the plastic. Thanks!

So my clutch pedal has been feeling rough when depressing it almost like it’s notchy or has a grinding feel, could it be the slave cylinder just being dry and in need of grease or will I need a clutch soon? I’m also not having any clutch slipping or shifting problems it’s just the pedal feeling weird when I depress it.

Could be either. What’s the mileage? Bad throwout bearing will also affect pedal feel. Have you tried the basic stuff like checking your master cylinder?

What does it mean if I’m unable to compress the clutch slave cylinder against the fork’s cup? Im using all my strength and I’m unable to get it back in place. I do have a ACT HD pressure plate and a lightweight flywheel if that matters

Hmm. Are you sure that the clutch slave piston hasn’t popped out and gotten stuck on the clutch slave housing? Making it unable to compress... it shouldn’t have anything to do with the transmission or clutch.

Have you ever of the clutch losing pressure at high rpm? Would this have something to do with air in the system or bad slave cylinder?

What do you mean by losing pressure exactly? Do you mean the pedal has no resistance when being pressed at high RPM?

Don’t think that would have anything to do with air in the system. Seems like it would have more to do with something that is RPM dependent like the clutch release bearing.

OK..and one more issues, after having been running for long hours of time >4 hours in which normal clutch was played, no high rpm or burning smells etc, clutch disengaged and engaged based on traffic conditions, the clutch pedal become stiff and sticky on pushing to and fro regardless of car is on or off....really need your rectify on this. I had a squeaky clutch pedal also. I ignored it and payed for it. It turned out to be the throwout bearing going bad. It finally froze up and when I pressed in the clutch, it blew out both the master and slave cylinders.

Was the throwout bearing OEM?

Not sure, it came with the Competition Clutch Stage 2 kit.

Not OEM. Those things are junk. I’ve seen two of those break. One on my car and one on a friends. Make sure you go OEM for that bearing if you haven’t already!

mine squeaks and makes the pedal action feel kinda sticky and unsmooth and soooo annoying. it never happens in the winter EVER! and only happens about an hour into my daily driving during the summer months. what the hell man.. please help somebody. I'm this close to spending 135 dollars on a whole new assembly. PS its not the pedal bolts squeaking. the squeaking does come from the pedal push rod area and you can also hear it if from outside of the car. can't tell if its echoing from the engine bay or from underneath the car by the slave cylinder??? its blowing my mind.. please help me save 130 dollars! I have a trebled system without a bleeder valve

A little late to the party, but... Placing the rod into a drill makes it faster and easier to polish.

I don’t think replacement will help if you polished it. Another option is to polish the other side of there the contact point on the clutch fork.

They might think that it is an issue with the clutch release bearing or pressure plate. In that case they would be right but squeaking is usually just the slave cylinder and fork in my experience.
