Thank you Troy. My little Volvo suffers from 112* sun this last summer. The headliner above the drivers seat is falling down. I had the sunroof cracked open too. I have the visor pushed forward so I don't have to look at it. I'm going to fix it myself. I'm 68, and a grandmother of 7, but I'm going to try. I asked one of my sons to fix it for me and he said to look it up on KZbin and fix it. So here I am. Thanks again.

Thanks for the video. Looks good. Here is a tip for others. If you follow instructions on the can to keep spray nozzles a foot or so away from surface, it then "spiderweb's" and is way taker and won't be as quick to saturate cloth. End result is less bleed thru spots.

Instead of tape and drape, I used Press and Seal (find on the grocery aisle with plastic wrap, wax paper and such). The bonus to me of using that was the ability to cover dome lights that I didn't want to remove to reattach the headliner.

I too used the 3M Headliner Adhesive as well. However, you need to let it try at least 5 minutes or it will soak through the fabric. I used plastic kitchen wrap to protect the window and plastic trash bags to protect the upholstery underneath. I was able to use my fingers to smooth out the fabric pretty well but the spoon is a nice touch.

You've inspired me, I'm gonna try this to fix my '04 Explorer that's sagging in the same spot. Question though: Any particular reason you went with a "general purpose" spray adhesive (the Loctite) vice using a dedicated headliner adhesive, such as 3M's 38808 Headliner and Fabric Adhesive? I'm no expert, just wondering.

Since it's the foam, between the fabric and the core headliner, that is deteriorating, and not the original adhesive, what keeps the residual foam from deteriorating more--and coming loose again? I'm thinking that it might be a good idea to sand off all the remaining foam from the core headliner (especially at the edge) before applying the adhesive. Your video is a little over a year old now. Do you still have the car? If so, how has this fix held up? Thanks for the video!

18 months and still holding strong. No new areas coming loose either. I still drive with my windows down all the time. I’m sure in worse cases you would need to take more drastic measures. Hi Troy… I just saw your video and it’s November 3rd 2022.. I need to repair my headliner as well as the side door vinyl. The passenger door vinyl has suddenly become loose at the free edge part of the door. It is loose all the way to the window handles. The vehicle is a 2001 Beetle.. she has seen better days but i refuse to let her go. She still gets me around town and I just have had her so long that i can’t give up on her. She has some issues that i am working on but i want to try to repair the inside things myself. Do you think the same method will work for the door vinyl? My fabric is very loose also in my headliner but i’m gonna try what you suggest. Should i buy a different spray adhesive for the vinyl part on the door? Thank you for any suggestions.. Lisa ( you might not even see my comment because this is an older video but i’m giving it a shot anyway) I have nobody to help me fix it but myself so i’m doing this so my poor little beetle looks better.. i know i must sound nuts but that car has been with me over 20 years and i can’t imagine her ending up in a junk yard.. she isn’t worth anything to anyone but to me she is my car and a part of my life for so long.. she needs to be pretty inside !
@troysgarage
@troysgarage Жыл бұрын
The same adhesive spray will work for both. Just spray both surfaces and let it dry enough to get tacky to the touch, then press them together. They should grab and hold right away. The fumes can be a little strong so be in a well ventilated area and try not to directly breath the fumes. You don't sound nuts to me! The truck in this video was mine for 16 years and I personally put over 240,000 miles on it. I did finally sell it 2 months ago and the headliner fix was still holding strong! You got this! 🙌

I used the same exact stuff, next morning same exact headliner issue. Even after I read all the directions on the back of the can; I also read the “IMPORTANT” column 5th line down, “ not recommended for unsupported vinyl fabric or headliners” And i also used the permanent bond instruction procedure. Used a bristle brush to remove any loose or deteriorated/expired foam from the headliner. Any extra extra help recommendation’s?

For anyone who's interested, in really bad cases, you can go "brute force" and remove the fabric altogether. I say brute force because it requires removing the entire ceiling. The ceiling foam on my old Chrysler Town and Country minivan was dissolving so badly nothing would stick to it. I mean, it would stick, but then the foam-along with wads of glue-would just crumble into the now sagging fabric and make an awful mess when the wind blew in. So... • I took out the ceiling and set it on a couple of sawhorses. (Harder than it seems. There are all kinds of electrical and AC connections up there.) • Brushed / scraped away every bit of foam. This left a fibrous kind of texture. Fine by me. • Spray painted it a nice flat gray to make it as inconspicuous as possible. (I considered doing a kind of Sistine chapel type thing, but nixed the idea.) • Reinstalled it. Boom done. I had the van for a good decade after that, and not one single person ever realized it should have had a fabric ceiling. Worked great, and no more crumbling foam worries.

Agreed with the term brute force! That is a big job. Hopefully most people find my video and fix theirs before that task is ever needed! This fix I did lasted 6 years before the drivers side started doing the same thing. I used this same fix on that side then sold the truck. I still see the truck over a year later and the headliner is still holding! Catch it soon enough and this fix is “permanent”.

Instead of doing it in a one time attempt, you should instead start from the internal area where it isn't adhered and work your to the edge,stretching it out as you work your way to the edge, also don't over apply the spray, you'll saturate the fabric and can end up allowing the subtance to surface which will compromise the material texture and feel, you want it 30% under the material if that makes semse

Honestly it's starting to come loose again, but only in a few small spots. I think I didn't get enough of the sticky stuff across both surfaces. I have one spot on the drivers side basically same location that's starting to come off as well now. Might be time to revisit this and fix both again.

Great video. Only trouble is we have Selley's spray adhesive (Bunnings Hardware) in Australia (Not Loctite) which is particularly unreliable for this application according to a review I read.

Just bought my first car and it has major headliner sag in the front & back, the previous owner appeared to use the fabric screws or whatever have you but they didn't hold. Would this work for larger areas as well? I'm talking the width of the back winsheild pane and about a good 4-6 inches hanging lol sounds like it might be a lot of work but I'm willing if it works good

In that case you’ll want to take the entire head piece out and replace the fabric completely. Hit the fabric store and buy some light weight flannel in whatever pattern, color or design suits you and you’ll have a brand new headliner that will last the rest of the cars life. There are some good videos out there already of headliner replacement. Watch those and follow their advice. You’ll do great! 👍🏼

@@troysgarage Thanks :) I've been looking at those kind of videos and the idea of a fun headliner is really cool, seems like I'll want some help though I'm a pretty tiny person and my Mazda6 isn't big by any means but it just sounds easier with an extra person lol

Did the repair last or did it start to sag again? I’m having the same issue, my headliner is beginning to sag/fall. In the same area you repaired.

Just this spring it has begun to pull away again. The repair lasted for several years. I have one more spot on the drivers side doing the same thing. I’m going to hit both sides again and hope for several more years before it needs it again. 🙌🏼🕺🏼

Spraying both, let it "tack up" a little too before sticking them together. You have one shot at it, once it sticks it's on for good!
