Today I picked up 2 very nice blocks. One walnut and one Oak. Because I really liked the tea light block with the built in matchbox. What an easy little project and with Xmas coming up, I will be sending 6 lucky family members/ friends this gift. Cant wait to start this tomorrow. Thanks for the inspiration , CHEERS !

I build the Candle idea for all my relatives on this Christmas and they all loved it.. the only difference is that I also added another space for a tiny plant. It looked amazing!

But what beginner would have a table saw, a router table, or a drill press? These are nice ideas but if they were aimed at beginers, they should have been done with hand tools.

You could always cheat and reuse an old picture frame for the 'catch-all'. I've bought things from a £1 store and glued them together to make chunky frames then customized it to my choice.

Do it old school. Nobody needs a fancy woodshop, it's just nice to have. You can make rabbit joints with a simple mallet and chisel. To make a mallet find a 4x4 cut 4" piece. Find center and install a handle using a 2" dowel rod. It is rudimental but it will get you started. Practice makes perfect. Improvise adapt and overcome.

Look forward to some other suggestions. A small step stool, soap dish, mail sorter key hook...... For the card holder I would add a backing block, when you're down to a few cards in the wider slot they will tend to fall backwards. The wall ladder could do with a few additional miter cuts to square it to the floor and wall. For the ones I've seen most are really roughed up to simulate age.
@DIYMontreal

Great suggestions! The beauty with these is you can adapt them and make them your own by tweaking the design and style as you suggested.

Nice one! I really like the plywood pencil holder and ring. I made a match/candle holder last year but I used the side grain based on how my scraps worked out and after time it actually warped shut and you really can't get the matches out. Going on the end grain as you did should be good and sturdy!

I agree, love the look of the Baltic birch plywood. Maybe we should try a plywood candle holder? No risk of warping there.

DIY Montreal, I like your ideas for simple gifts, well done. I am surprised at the 2 negative comments below. I actually made the candle holder and some other wooden items in a driveway workshop for the kids in the street where I live. The items were prepped in my workshop using only hand tools and the kids assembled them in my front driveway, using only hand tools and an electric drill. They were given to their parents as Christmas presents. They also helped me construct a couple of toys that we use when we have our street parties. I am waiting for the comments to my post like.....Gifts you can make if you own hand tools, otherwise perhaps not.....or.....I then take it to my hand tool....Wait, I don't have any hand to:/ etc etc I think they just like to add negative comments so they can keep reading them over and over again. Once again, thanks for a great video, and yes, I have subscribed to your channel.

Quick question and sorry if it’s lame, but when you made the card holder you left, what seemed to be a lot of walnut (guessing walnut) hanging out both ends of the lighter wood. Why not keep it flush and only waste cutoff on one end? I only ask because I’ve seen a lot of this, mostly on tutorials for cutting boards and such. I do a lot of hobby woodworking on the side but I don’t do this type of woodworking so I’m curious as to why folks do this. The candle holder is definitely on my to do list.
@DIYMontreal
@DIYMontreal 5 жыл бұрын
I see your point and normally I would want to avoid wasting expensive wood like walnut. I just went with the lengths of wood I had on hand and it worked out that way. Only minor waste so I wasn’t too concerned.

Not sure why people have to make fun of someone for mispronouncing words. I guess it makes them feel better about them selves. Maybe people in your part of the country just pronounce words differently. Like the word "route." Some parts of the country pronounce it like "out" and some like "boot", except both with an "r". My brother always pronounces sword with the "sw" sound. He just said it that way for so long that it was hard for him to break the habit. So, you call it whatever you want to, the vid was good!
@DIYMontreal

Thank you, I very much agree! Like your brother I have a few words I pronounce a little “off” but am fully aware of it and just don’t take it personally! Thanks though, much appreciated.

First let me say congratz. I love your small projects. You have very good ideas for very little things. I like that alot. Ive been woodworking since I was 15, now Im 50, so its been a long time. Now due to my health I can't work anymore. So I thought maybe throw myself back into doing a little woodworking and selling things online or what ever. I dont have the means for big workshops, so I used our spareroom to make myself a little workshop. So now Im doing lots of little things. BUT I HAVE ONE HUGE PROBLEM.. I noticed that you live in Monteral, is that right? If it is, can you tell me where you purchase your hardwood for your projects I've been searching for woodshops like that for a long time and I cant find any. Anywhere around here. I used to have one a long time ago "I believe it was on Liege street or Guzeau, not sure, its been a long time, it was close to the Park Jarry But I cant find it anymore. So I dont think they exist anymore. So can you tell me where you get your hardwood as well as your Haqrdwear like T-Tracks , push clamps and things like that, I cant seem to find any. So can you help a guy out? Please let me know Thanks
