You can also thread a small wire through each part solder the joints and pull lamp cord through and then drill your hole all the way through and route a groove for the wire. Both wires are hot with AC current.

What do you use to keep your copper pipe from tarnishing?

I’ve left it bare to allow for tarnishing as I like the aged look, otherwise spray it with a coat of polyurethane.

Can I keep the cardboard in the socket and spray paint the outside? I'm worried about getting it back in afterward

Sure you can do it that way. Maybe just add a little painter's tape on the cardboard to avoid too much paint on it.

Could it be potentially dangerous in any way? Do you have to ground anything? Nice looking lamp by the way!

No there should be no danger as long as you connected the wires to the socket correctly and have them covered with the cardboard insulator.

Yes exactly, I just cut off the end with wire cutters
