Күн бұрын

The most complete and in-depth video on how to build a farmhouse table. DIY PETE shows the entire process from start to finish. This farm table can be built out of everyday construction grade lumber for under $200.
*Please NOTE: While my table has held up well and had only a small amount of movement after 2 1/2 years, there are certainly things I would do differently with more experience under my belt. For beginners, I'd recommend using biscuits and glue for the top planks. Dowels or floating tenons/dominos are another option. Do make sure to let the wood properly dry.
Plans are based off Ana-White's build geared towards beginning DIY'ers. Pocket holes are a simple way to connect boards, but if you do have access to a biscuit joiner or are capable of more advanced joinery please go for it.

Kreg Jig - amzn.to/1X7Bd9H
Orbital Sander - amzn.to/1VUVNYy

*Supplies Needed
2 1/2 inch Kreg Screws - amzn.to/1VUVPzF

4.5 inch Torq Screws - Need about 20
2.5 inch Torq Screws - Need about 20

You’ll need to buy 4×4, 2×10, and 2×4 boards for this project. These boards can be found at your local lumber yard. Take your time to find quality boards that are straight and have little warp. First, I built the table top out of 2x10s. I used 5 2×10’s for the main part of the table and a 2×10 for each breadboard end. Ana’s plans call for four main boards, but I wanted a little larger area to spread out. I used a 12″ miter saw to make all of the cuts. I cut the 5 boards to 69 inches long.
Here is a look at the table top. A 2×10 board is actually 9 1/4 inches wide. The total dimensions of the top are 46 1/4 inches by 87 1/2 inches. Set the Kreg Jig at the 1 1/2 inch setting for the stock thickness. (My video says 2 1/2 inch setting but I meant to say 1 1/2 inch.)
You’ll attach each board using the 2.5 inch long Kreg Jig screws. It helps to clamp the boards to each other and use a little body weight to get the boards even with each other. Drill two pocket holes on the ends of each board as well. They will be used to connect the main boards to the breadboard.
I had to modify the width of the base a bit so that it fit the wider table top. I built the two ends out of 4×4’s. I used 6″ long torq screws (also known as star pattern screws or leg screws) to connect them (about 3 for each joint). The two vertical boards are cut at 10 degree angles (parallel to each other).
Connect the two ends together with the 4×4 horizontal beams on top and bottom. I didn’t have an extra set up hands to help me, so I used Jack Clamps to help hold everything up while I tied the boards together with 6″ torq screws.
Attach the base to the top using 4.5″ torq screws through the 4×4 beams. Use 2 inch torq screws to connect the 2×4 to the table top. (I counter sunk mine a bit).
Here is a look at the completed table prior to staining and sealing the piece. I also created matching benches to fit this table. The plans can be found by clicking here. I modified the width so they are a total of 69″ wide. Instead of using a 2×10 for the breadboards I use 2×8’s. Everything else was kept the same as Ana’s plans. The inside span of my table where the benches fit in is 73″ so that left 2 inches of wiggle room on each side of the bench so it can easily slide in and out.
The next step is to make the table unique to you. I decided to distress the farm table by using tools around the shop to make the table look worn. I used nails to create wormhole marks and a circular saw blade and hammer to put some character into the table.
I used a #00 Steel Wool and White Vinegar solution to patina the wood and give it an aged look. Put a good handful of steel wool in a jar and add white vinegar. Let the vinegar dilute the steel wool for at least 3 to 4 days. The mixture will get darker the longer you let it sit. I let mine sit for a full week. Once diluted, simply brush the mixture on your piece. Oxidation will occur as the mixture reacts with the tannins in the wood to give it variations in color.

Pete, as an 80 year plus wood worker you've rekindled the spirit of creation in me. A friend of mine who owns a great seafood restaurant asked me to build a similar table but 3'-42" high for his restaurant. The top will be of hard wood and stained as close as possible to a birch color, I'll have to dispel his thought of a $200.00 B/M because of it not being all construction lumber. Thanks very much for the great video. You've the best web site I've ever seen on projects. Keep up the good work.

Pete, I built this table for my daughter last year as her Christmas present, (she's a good daughter). I used original-growth Florida pine that was salvaged from a central Florida homestead. Her's is seven foot long. As I watched you distress your table, I chuckled because- after all that work; my daughter found an old nail hole where you can see all the way to the floor. She loves that it's there. This year for Christmas I'm making her a matching bench. I suspect for her birthday, she'll decide she wants two of them instead of one; "Woman's prerogative" to change their minds, and all that stuff. Thanks for making me a hero!

@@DIYPETE I stubled here and this clip is just pure gold. I did me a farm house dining table. Its about 9 foot by 4,5 foot. That way we can have two people at the end and best of it is that you can really have lots of food in the middle. Youre the one who inspired me and I salute you for that!

We just bought a home and we have both a formal dining room and a huge morning room. so instead of buying two tables (considering we don't formally entertain that much and might turn that into a office/sitting area), we figured to buy a longer table to put in the morning room to fit 10-12 people. But those typically cost a thousand plus. After watching this I might build the table and buy the chairs. Save money, good father/son project and take pride that it's one of a kind!

Hi Pete, let me start out by thanking you and others like you who take the time out of your day to make videos for those of us who lack the skill that you possess. About a year ago after watching this video, I promised my fiancee that I would build her a farmhouse table. As the time continued to pass, the possibility of her ever receiving that table become a running joke in the family (although I was very serious). It took me a long time but after watching this video about 100 times I was inspired enough to just jump in and do the best that I could. This is my first time building anything with wood outside of a birdhouse but I can definitely say that I am now hooked. This table is about 8x4 and it's about a foot taller than a standard table as she wanted it "pub height". I have learned a lot and will definitely make some changes on future builds but she is in love with it, and I have you to thank! Pics below :)

Yes, I',m combing through all of these farmhouse table build videos looking for how people address the issue of wood movement, especially with the use of a breadboard end. I don't seem to find any good solutions. Have you had any troubles?
@noytheya
@noytheya 7 жыл бұрын
Well, since he won't answer the question I will. I made pretty much the same table a year ago. The breadboards have grown about 1/4" on either end (or the table width has shrunk). I think it was just expansion of the breadboard ends. It doesnt look bad or really all that noticeable. The rest of the tabletop has held together well. Since I need to be able to disassemble my table periodically, I modified the frame by turning the 2x4 braces 90 degrees and then kregged 2 2x4s to the bottom of the tabletop up, inside and against the frame 2x4s. So its a frame consisting of 2, 2x4s lengthwise on either side of the table that fits inside the table frame (hope that makes sense). Then I drilled 4 holes (one in each corner and ran a bolt through the frame and tabletop 2x4s to keep the top secure. This worked well. The only thing I would change is how the top is made. Although I really like the look of the lumber nested together, its impossible to get them perfectly flush so bits of leftover food and whatnot ends up being lodged between the tabletop boards. I would either joint the edges of the boards and laminate them together or fill the gaps with epoxy if I did it over again.

Your breadboards didn't grow. Wood expands and contract with seasonal moisture changes most notably across the grain. The width of you table shrank. This is mostly due to the fact of using lumber that had a moisture content of about 19% (what kiln dried 2x material is typically dried to.) When making furniture from hardwood, the usual moisture content is between 8-10% or less to help it be more stable. However, when it comes to tables, they are still going to expand and contract across their width quite significantly if you live somewhere with seasons. Breadboards are not there to prevent this or to just look nice. They serve the purpose of keeping the panel top from cupping. To do this, they need to be installed properly with mortise and tenon and elongated peg holes. I'd assume that you have also probably had some twisting in your table from all the screws locking in wood movement .

As long as I drew enough money to keep the rent paid lights on and netflix working, I wasn't going to do anything. Just like most. But I gave up my check after hanging out with a friend that builds his own furniture for resale and learned how to myself. As a fellow DIY'er like many of you, there are things you learn along the journey. While I've had very little shifting and no cracking/warping in the dry climate where I live, many people will, and there are certainly things I'd do much differently. Biscuits, dowels, or floating tenons would definitely be used in the next video taped build I do to update this which was done 2 1/2 years ago. The pocket hole technique is very basic and geared towards beginners and getting people started without a huge investment. However, if you have at least a biscuit joiner or more advanced skills please use them by all means. I appreciate all your feedback!

Thank you so much for this great video! We're buying a new home and I want a rustic farmhouse look in my home. I didn't want a dining room table that was formal so this is exactly what I wanted. I checked on prices to buy and they are pretty high so my Dad and I discussed building one together. I'm not handy at all but he is so I feel that this is a good project for us to work on together. I will be showing him this video. Thanks again!

What a beautiful table, and GREAT how-to video! We have plans to make an outdoor farm table, and I will follow the instructions for the top, but make the legs out of rusty steel welded together. This is a very helpful video. I need to build a table top and I will be reusing my existing old kitchen table base and legs painting them black. I really like the simplicity of using construction grade dimensional lumber for the top and the finish will make it look like it is 100 years old. Thanks for posing this one. Its just what I was looking for.

I'm not a great fan of pocket hole construction, but this is a well executed project. Your explanations of materials, tools and process are among the best I've ever viewed. Excellent work and a beautiful result. I've found that if you do your staining and finish before assembly it makes it easier to get to all areas instead of crawling around on the floor or trying to reach difficult places.

Mark Hazlewood Hi Mark, thank you very much for the feedback and kind words. I really appreciate it. The goal is to inspire and teach the average DIY'er / newbie who doesn't have many tools and so the pocket jig is a good option, and as they progress other techniques are certainly great for them to give a shot. Thank you for sharing your tips as well. I hope all your projects are going well and THANK YOU so much for the awesome comment Mark. Words like yours are what inspire me to keep on making new videos :) Cheers from Montana - Pete

DIY PETE Mark Hazlewood Awesome tutorial! Very well explained. Could you give more details about the other techniques you talk about? I want to build a long home office desk (about 11ft long) and wondered what kind of support frame I should put below to keep the top flat. I don't want to add too much skirt all around because it not convenient for desk chairs with armrests. Thanks.

I actually built two of these tables about a year ago. A 6 and an 8 seat version. I used through wedged pegged mortise and tenons on all the frame/leg joinery, pegged functioning breadboards, just glue and biscuits on the table top, and tabletop buttons to attach it to the frame. They're holding up great. I love the look of this table, just not his execution.

Thanks Miles! Sounds like a couple great tables you built. I'd certainly go with a different technique these days and the mortise and tenons method would be top notch. Cheers

Hey Pete, great video and table...perfect combination of simplicity and character. Could you comfortably sit people at the ends of this table in a chair or would the base get in the way? If not could you set back the base or would that compromise the integrity/strength if the base was inward of the breadboards? Finally, is there a rule of thumb of how far back a base should be to be out of the way for end chairs? Thanks!
