I just used this method to fix my sagging garage door panel with the Lowes 1 1/4" x 1 1/4" x 8 foot Zinc-Plated Steel Perforated-Slotted Angle and it worked perfect. $29.79 each (20) with military discount. I did have to drill one hole in one end since the holes did not match the hinge holes. Otherwise a one hour job and easy. Thanks for the video.

This is exactly what has happened to my garage door. Had no clue how to fix the thing. New door costs right at $1000 with all hardware...couldn't buy just one panel. That was a pick it up and DIY deal....2 different stores. Went to Craigslist and found 2 doors, all hardware, and 1 opener with remote for $250. Yes, I bought it. Now I need to look at a few how to install a garage door to try to get this thing done correctly so it's not one big catastrophe waiting to happen again. What a mess. Thanks for all the help on this video and folks commenting. Jesus bless.

I did something similar a few years ago. My double door was developing a stress crack at the center where the traveler pulls on it. My repair was more preventative. I bought a length of angle iron (less than yours)a few steel plates and similarly applied series of bolts and nuts. It added easily a dozen times the strength to that area.

As we see at the end of the video, the door slams to a stop as the lifter comes to the top of its travel. This flexes the door and probably damaged the top of the door through continual flexing--as the door slams to a stop. Just like bending a copper wire back and forth causes it to split, the door with continued flexing as it slams at the top caused the metal at the top center of the door to fail. The Lifter has upper and lower limit adjustments in the power unit. The upper limit needs to be set to stop the door as it rises so that it doesn't slam at its upper limit! This failure of the door likely could have been avoided with a proper adjustment of the power unit! Watch the end of the video carefully to see the flexing of the door, and note the noise, at the end of the lifter's travel.

@gts_esonasty8459 10 ай бұрын
@@RuJoe720definitely happens, have been doing garage doors for 8 years. Before attaching a opener you need to put a strut across the top section. The pulling and pushing of the opener will bend a door like this in half. That bend in the section that he says “caused the problem” is actually a whole different problem caused from the opener. There are a lot of things wrong with the install on this door that caused that opener to rip apart the door.

So mine is like this all the way down and ripped apart in other places really bad way worse than this i’ve had to fully brace my garage door with thin aluminum behind where this is torn apart. My garage door is 16 foot wide and I’ve had to race it on every single panel basically sandwiching it and then I got slotted angle iron and braced the entire garage door from left to right doubling up on everything. It was quite expensive to do over $1000. Cheaper than buying a brand new garage door though because that’s what I was told by multiple companies it would not be able to be fixed because mine was buckling from the top to the bottom if I open the garage door, it would cave-in. But I was able to do this cheaper than having a new one and having it installed. It took me two years to complete because of how much it cost and the availability of the materials that I needed garage doors are made so cheap and not very structurally sound. I completely over engineered mine. I had to go this direction because with how I work I could not have a new garage door delivered at my house because I would just do the work myself somebody would probably steal it from my house. I had the ability to have it shipped to Home Depot but it was a six month wait time.

One thing to really be mindful of when working either these things, garage doors are a PINCH AND CRUSH HAZARD. I had two bent panels, and, yesterday, trying to pop them back into place, got my hand caught between the panels. The spring loaded tension made it impossible to pull my hand out and I had to use a pry bar to open it back up. Luckily I still have my hand, but even if you’re not working with the springs, garage doors are still dangerous. One thing I’d like to try before reinforcing the panel is bending it back into shape. I was thinking of taking off the bent panels, sandwiching it between two pieces of 1/2 inch plywood and rolling a heavy weight on them. Do y’all think this would work?

There should have been a u-bar or strut across the top panel. The reason your center metal snapped was because something jammed on the way down or up. Also the opener arm is set way too high. It should have been set towards the center of the panel. These are called pan doors, this is a common issue.

The main problem with that door is that it did not have a single horizontal strut. That is what caused it to buckle and why it caused the J arm to pull away from its mounting. Each panel should have its own strut, preferably as near as possible where one panel meets the next panel.
@DIYwithMichaelBorders

Thanks for watching & sharing, not sure how lithe installers missed that. 😎👍
@brandoncummings1037

Each panel does not need its own strut unless you live in a wind-coded area or it's an especially heavy door. But in this situation with an 8-foot non-insulated door that perf angle should work just fine for a while although I still prefer a strut because it's more secure. You are correct about the top panel needing a strut though. Whenever you have an operator you are supposed to have some form of reinforcement for that top panel. Somewhere down the road, depending on the usage of that door, the top panel at least will need to be replaced though. Especially with that center stile having detached as well as having a stress crack alongside the top of the panel. Very much a temporary fix. (Edit): spelling

Great video!!! I have the same situation but what caused the problem??? Why did the door start bending like that??
@Fetidaf
@Fetidaf 2 жыл бұрын
You have an operator? If so it’s probably not installed correctly or there’s something messed up either with operator itself or where it connects to the door… or the limits (what tells the operator to stop when it’s closed or open) are off

So by adding that angle iron across the top, that was enought to bend back/ straighten out the bend in the op of the actual garage door?

Any thoughts as to what caused it to hang up?(1:30 in video) My door hits the center carrier bearing on the way down and then stops 6-8 inches from floor and opens till the trolley slams into the opener. If I disconnect and operate by hand it smooth and doesn't hit anywhere

I am having a problem with a buckling garage door nowhere as near bad as the one depicted in this vid everything is intact but I can see a slight bend on the top panel and a rod. All of which look like they can be straightened out. Sent pics to a garage door guy and was told the panel may be bad. I dont think so the door is about 11 months old with a very slight bend. Wish I could find an honest garage guy in N E Ohio.

I have a problem, but it’s not exactly like what happened in this video. Everytime I go to try and open the garage, The metal bar that is connected from the garage wall and the garage opener machine, keeps bending and not allowing me to open the garage door. What should I do?

Thanks for watching & reaching out to us. Do you see any loose hardware that secures that bar to the it’s respective mounts? Both on wall & below motor? You will want to ensure any & all hardware is properly secured. Your door & securing arm may also need to be realigned.

Good morning, just poured our morning coffee and we are sitting down to answer any and all questions from the DIY community. You can definitely entertain that option. A few friendly reconstruction movements of door panel may be all you need to get the door realigned to a point where it can operate properly and efficiently. Most important thing is to work carefully as you bend panel back into place. The last thing you want to do is damage something else in the process. Keep us posted Jay. What type of screws would you recommend for drilling into the fiberglass garage door?
@DIYwithMichaelBorders
@DIYwithMichaelBorders 10 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching, we recommend stainless steel nuts, bolts, and washers. As far as size, that will depend on your exact setup. However 3/4” bolts usually do the trick. Thanks for watching and sharing this. We are hanging out watching college football all day answering any and all questions for the DIY community. A few things can cause this. 1. Unit not initially installed properly 2. Door recently painted and then dried in the closed position…which causes massive strain on unit as it attempts to open door when weather strips are dried to frame. 3. Loose chain 4. Unit not lubricated on a yearly bases. Please let us know if you have any questions. A special thanks to you for taking the time out of your Saturday to share this comment, it means the world to us.

Something like this happened in the house we are renting. I figured that I needed a mending plate where the roller arm attaches, but there is no way that I am attaching slotted angle iron all of the way across. I just wish that I could find replacement parts. The support brace that connects the door to the roller arm is bent and twisted, but I couldn't find a replacement, so I hammered it back using two pieces of angle iron. There must be a place to buy that top piece, but nobody at the local hardware stores knew where to find the parts.
