Grime ambassador Dizzee Rascal recalled the inspirations that went into his debut album Boy In Da Corner and the lessons learnt along the way in this public conversation as part of the 2016 Red Bull Music Academy UK Tour.
When Dylan Mills released his debut album as Dizzee Rascal in 2003 he put London's newest sound, grime, on the global map. Fashioned from his experiences as an amateur pirate radio DJ and MC as well as his fascination with Three 6 Mafia, drum & bass and heavy metal, Boy in da Corner captured the raw energy and determination of a teenager who had found salvation in music.

A critical and commercial success, the album earned Mills three top 30 hits and the Mercury Prize at age 19. It also put him on the road to becoming the first legitimate pop star to emerge from the grime scene, with more albums, worldwide tours and a performance at the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics.

I think people forget that his second album was grime as well. Not just his first album. But his first album is an original classic nevertheless.

Pretty Solid interview that surprisingly went into more depth than I thought it would. Being from Los Angeles & Fellow Nigerian Dizzee was the First UK Artist I can recall Hearing back in 2006. Happy for the Longevity & Progression He has made in his Career. Definitely my Favorite Artist from the United Kingdom

I wanted to hear what his rhythm influences were. I'm a rocker but his lines are so rhythmically tight while the bass lines are often loose.

These questions were lazy AF. Pretty sure I've heard each one of them in some other interview. And Dizzee doesn't want to talk about Boy in da Corner for the rest of his life!! That must be so aggravating. Interviewers: Put some effort into your questions! Please!

And it's mad disrespectful to say directly to Dizzee: I want you to do THIS-rather than what you've been doing. I get that Dizzee's work after Boy in da Corner hasn't been too hot, but goddamn!!
