We've reached the point where a union would be do more harm than good. In the 90's only major labels created stars so a union could easily form between the Big 3. There are too many independent rappers today for a union to even work. You can't push independence and not signing to a major then implement a system that would require a label infrastructure. At that point you'd have somebody like Tech 9ine sign with Def Jam just for health insurance. Meanwhile Tech is one of the most successful indie artists ever.

This conservation between Vlad and DJ Akademiks is a good one to have. I can see both sides. With all of the information and access that is available artists can empower themselves and set -themselves up for success. Here are a few tips I would like to share. Before an artist, decides to sign to a major label or if an artist decides to be independent, they should consult with a Business Attorney, CPA, Insurance broker, and Financial Planner. If you want to look for creditable professionals check out these amazing organizations National Black Accountants Association, the National Black Lawyers Association, the Association of African American Financial Planners, the National African American Insurance Association, and the National Association of Real Estate Brokers. Building a financial team that you pick out, vet, and trust is essential. As black artists, we can take the lead and work with our community to grow our brand and businesses The next most important thing for an artist or business owner to do is trademark their stage name, copyright each and every song, and patent any product that is made by the artist. Every artist should have an EIN number and structure themselves as an LLC, C-Corp, or S-Corp depending on what is best based on their business attorney's legal advisement. When younger or new artists start, they need to get life insurance on themselves starting with $ 1 million, and acquire different types of additional insurance. Also, artists need to make sure they have health insurance. I know this a lot. Nobody will be responsible for you but you.

You guys noticed glad talks a lot more with the people he is actually friends with. TK Kirkland, Busey, DJ Akademiks column Adam 22. It’s less of an interview and more of a conversation between the two because they are actually friends off the camera and talk regularly.
