The music industry is very similar to venture capitalism. The shitty deal is because labels will sign hundreds of artists that never make it and takes losses on them. So, the one artist that is successful ends up paying for the failures of the 500 artists that the label signed.

We've reached the point where a union would be do more harm than good. In the 90's only major labels created stars so a union could easily form between the Big 3. There are too many independent rappers today for a union to even work. You can't push independence and not signing to a major then implement a system that would require a label infrastructure. At that point you'd have somebody like Tech 9ine sign with Def Jam just for health insurance. Meanwhile Tech is one of the most successful indie artists ever.

Couldn't agree more with Vlad - blaming the label is like blaming Walmart bc you find out they markup their prices. People need to grow up & take responsibility before blaming everyone else. If a musician doesn't understand the importance of publishing it's their own fault. If it's a bad deal then go find a better one.

Almost how radio slowly died off. Back in the day a label can push a artist in front of your face every 2 secs and the artist would sell well.. now the ppl kindof gaing control over that. Look at Coi Laray... they tried so hard to make us like her getting her features nonstop.. radio play and ads and she didnt even sell 20k. If you go to an island of cannibals, you cannot act surprised when they start chewing you up. Vlad is saying these rappers should know that they’re signing bad deals, why are the rappers complaining??? They signed the best deal that they could find at that time.

This conservation between Vlad and DJ Akademiks is a good one to have. I can see both sides. With all of the information and access that is available artists can empower themselves and set -themselves up for success. Here are a few tips I would like to share. Before an artist, decides to sign to a major label or if an artist decides to be independent, they should consult with a Business Attorney, CPA, Insurance broker, and Financial Planner. If you want to look for creditable professionals check out these amazing organizations National Black Accountants Association, the National Black Lawyers Association, the Association of African American Financial Planners, the National African American Insurance Association, and the National Association of Real Estate Brokers. Building a financial team that you pick out, vet, and trust is essential. As black artists, we can take the lead and work with our community to grow our brand and businesses The next most important thing for an artist or business owner to do is trademark their stage name, copyright each and every song, and patent any product that is made by the artist. Every artist should have an EIN number and structure themselves as an LLC, C-Corp, or S-Corp depending on what is best based on their business attorney's legal advisement. When younger or new artists start, they need to get life insurance on themselves starting with $ 1 million, and acquire different types of additional insurance. Also, artists need to make sure they have health insurance. I know this a lot. Nobody will be responsible for you but you.

Dear @Alicia M you disappointed me. Concise is the first principle AND the PRINCIPAL of advice. I say that as a successful independent artist. You messed up your whole random rant of copy and paste once you said "Before you sign to a major..." Then you either proved to either not Black or Uncle Ruckus when you suggested linking with an association based on ethnicity rather than merit, when giving ARTISTS advice. You engaged in committing a multiverse of stereotypes for your second violation. And your third violation was wasting our time for the sake of your gloom shine muted by ignorance. You are a false prophet and I'm glad the next person called you out and I thank God that the previous comment paved the way for me to do the same with eloquence. Be yourself and no one else.
