I once saw Fabio&Grooverider in early 1991 in Edinburgh on a Thursday night in a club with about 50/80 people no joke. I swear they played there asses off just to say this is us & we’re going to show you how it’s done. I missed my English exam the next morning as I was 15 on one 🕊️👈🙈. Both Grooverider & Fabio recognised I was a raver & had a knowledge of who they where & how good they both where it was like they played the 90 minute set just for me & my m8. I’d be getting the thumbs up when they’d drop something like vamp by outlander & Joey Beltrams energy Flash as this was when they both played acid house & early hardcore before the jungle scene took over about 18 months later. Wicked fun & great memories. Top show Ron. ✌️👍✌️

Love the openness with which the problems DnB had in the late 90's are discussed here. I started Djing Hardcore in 91 and followed the scene religiously until 98 when from one day to the next I packed it in and started playing Garage. Same reason. The music became a "mans game" more akin to the nerdyness seen in the video game scene than anything I'd experienced in music. The fun and soul had disappeared. All the girls (THE key ingredient in any scene / club) had buggered off. Garage was the breath of fresh air was was looking for. Big up Fabio and Ron!

How Fabio acquired his name was nuts hahaha. Great stories about the early rave movement. The Ford Capri for £60 though hahaha, those were the days though!! Big up Mendoza!! Big up Fabio and how he brought up the punitive legislative bills against the rave and House Music scene. We've been always fighting the system to play music and make a little change. Those illegal field raves need to be made into films. Thatcher's government wanted to close down anything they couldn't control or tax. The rebellious nature of our music was the essence of it all.

Ah man. Ron you just keep on pulling out the big guns. Great interview. I really think this particular episode pulls EVERYTHING together. Colin Dale is responsible for a lot and I love how Fabio gives props to his foundation, and articulates the very diverse nature of this incredible music scene and movement that Fabio created with Groove. Fabs is so bloody real with it all. So many sliding door moments. If Fabio hadn't met Colin Dale. If he hadn't of gotten his name on the radio wrong. I mean would DnB even exist? Deep eh. Big ups Ron. Stirling work sir! Respect.

Chris was a very kind person and a full on Junglist. Roast unfortunately never gets it’s flowers and could be as a friend once put it that as it was one of the out and out weekly Jungle raves it got overlooked as the media caught up with Jungle. Who knows! DM me on my instagram @djron_film re your writing, I’d love to hear more.

We have to big up Eastman and Susie G for allowing the promotion and play of what was termed intelligent Jungle/ Jungle Tekno / Jungle Jazz from the start. I totally understand what Fabio is talking about. That's how legal radio was able to hijack elements of the scene, but in some sense without the crossover to commercial would the music have proliferated. To be honest the poor man's drug "crack "was prevalent during the Jungle scene and it changed the vibe. Crack is a nasty drug and the social issues of Thatcher's Britain was spilling into the clubs. When something gets too popular you always get people trying to hijack it and sabotage it and that's also what happened to Jungle. It's only an opinion.

Kudos! This is probably the best Fabio interview I've seen. For historical clarity reasons, Rage started in '88 not '87 and yeah, when Fabio and Grooverider started their residency around '91 it definitely helped shape things crowd wise and deserves much props. Props equally have to go out to those events that came before '91 though, like RIP @ Clink St, Trip City/Ratpack, Fantastic Ibizia, Dungeons and Freedom 'that's what life's about', which was right smack bang in the hood. Places like Tottenham and Dalston.

Sick interview! Was telling my wife, who's in her mid thirties, that all this shit is so sick now, hearing all this, when in the 90's you literally had some mix tapes and word of mouth to ID tunes and had no idea about deejays/ producers aside from random interviews in DJ mag and all that. Seemed such a mystery to me back then haha! So great to hear about Speed. Such a heavy time for a new kind of riddim and a sick time for the music in general. Those meetings sound proper bizarre... 🤣🤣🤣 Big up, Ron!

Fabio is a legend in the game, one of the ones that's got the real swagger. His tweets are the best too.
