I get what you say about very hard crowd to dj for. That was my last homecoming. My one huge homecoming, however, took a bit to get on the floor but once I did they stayed on hype. They love the mumble rap and EDM. Btw just a comment, your congratulations Dzeko remix is explicit. Other than that amazing setups, beats mine! My homecomings were 200 kids 500 kids and 300 kids
@DJLoStax
@DJLoStax 5 жыл бұрын
i feel you 100% on the diverse crowd. Did my first homecoming this year and it was the exact same way.. 25% wanted new hip hop %25 wanted country and the rest wanted pop or soundcloud artists i had never heard off. Going into it as a 10yr DJ i really thought i had it handled but i was mistaken. All ended well though. staff did tell me usually the kids dip out after an hour or so but i managed to keep them the whole time thanks to some bangers.

Yes you were correct on the dance crowd assessment. I have run across that too. Split crowds ,(Country/Hip Hop), are nearly impossible to please. I would love a lesson you gave on setting your system without speakers but more detailed. In other words, setting to avoid red lining. I still struggle a little with that. But you are still the best! Always great stuff! TJ the DJ in East Texas.

Hey Rick I wanted to share a song that you might have already played, but it has been a bigger crowd pleaser than the Cupid Shuffle. In fact I played the extended version,(6+) only to have the crowd wanting for me to play it again...back to back! Some guys start taking of their shirts and the girls just love this song too. The song is from the movie Magic Mike and it is called Pony by Ginuinne. I have now mashed it with Tell Me Something Good, by Rufus. With your huge bass speakers I can only imagine how it would sound from you. Anyway let me know what you think. It’s even a clean worded song! Thanks!

Everybody has their own preference but I think 100 Hz is a bit on the high side for a low, mid crossover point. If you run your crossover at something between 70-85 Hz you can get more power out of your subs and better sound in my opinion. Apologies for my crappy English and congrats for the awesome job you did!
@DJRickWeb
@DJRickWeb 5 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. I like 80 hz the most normally. I decided on 100 hz based on my tops really slacking to produce enough of the 80 to 100 hz range.

0 dB is good but id recommend running master @ negative 3 - 6 gives you more headroom for when your mixing music. Playing one track is good for testing head room but its when your mixing and playing 2 tracks together the master will creep up very easy, because the 2 songs are working together to push the volume louder. You know what your doing though mate, its just a tip. You are really going ahead in leaps and bounds mate maybe one day we can meet up, when I fly to the states again. Peace Out Bro

Redlining=clipping=distortion=crappy sound. As a FOH sound guy myself at a pretty large church that does live events many places we never go above 0dB. We can go to +12 before we hit distortion of any sort due to Allen&Heath's amazing preamps but we don't go that high.

Love these vlogs Rick, you come off as very knowledgeable and I just want to ask as for someone who is a beginner DJ like myself and has a small gig for a Christmas party coming up...do you still recommend the Mackie Thump 15s for beginners and small events? If so, will I be able to use just one at small events like that?
@DJRickWeb
@DJRickWeb 5 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. The new version of the thump isnt that great. Personally think the ev zlx is the best budget speaker right now. And for your one speaker for party. All comes down to size of room, amount of people, and required volume level

DJ Rick Web sounds good. I will take a look when I head to the store tomorrow. Room size is a typical restaurant private room for a crowd of about roughly 20-30 people..if that helps? I saw in one of your older videos that is how you started out for about a year (one speaker)

You shouldn't ever have to change the volume on your PRX's if they're connected to the DriveRack; set the levels to where the driverack tells you to set them and the pa2 will take care of the limiter for you. You could push +15dB through the input on the pa2 and it won't hold the limiter on your speakers cause the PA2 will do that for you

Hi Rickwebb, Just a question mate I use the same Yamaha mixers as you guys I connect my controller into ch1&2 my RCF speakers put out too much low end in a small environment so i control the lower end on external mixer so it doesn't interfere with my mixing on my controller. What I'm asking is what settings do you have the PAD/HPF buttons on. Pushed in or out..? Thank you.

For an aux feed in a live-controlled environment I would never use a HPF on those channels. I would use an RTA to see where your bass and mid levels are and adjust from there on a GEQ. You can get them relatively cheap and they will do an excellent job for what you want to do.

Great setups as always, but I have one question. Why did you take the big SRX815 speakers to the smaller setup and the smaller PRX712 speakers to the big setup?
@DJRickWeb

Because I was able to tap into the sound system at the big gig if I needed more volume. Which we ended up not needing. The combined output of the prx and the avantes was more than enough. Also the coverage needed for the bigger gig was wider than what just 2 sec 815ps could cover. So going with 4 lesser speakers gave us about the same spl as the srxs but with better coverage.

Hey so I went in to my local guitar center to try out the PRX815’s and they were pretty quiet. I had everything cranked on it and it wasn’t very loud, could it have been in monitor mode? Cause I’ve gotten Eons louder than that
@DJRickWeb
@DJRickWeb 5 жыл бұрын
Could have been the monitor mode. The source if it's that stupid all in one built in thing guitar centers have. Lots of times those dont push enough signal to the speaker. Could also be that someone messed with the internal dsp and lowered it.

Okay, I was just really confused. I also used one of the QSC 18’s cause they didn’t have any JBL subs for some reason In that room. I don’t remember what it was called but it was around $1400 and I cranked it and it shook the damn building lmao. Also this is a stupid ass question, but do you think the bass output on the PRX 15 is more than the EON 15?

Overkill in terms of sound processing. It adds a lot of unnecessary but helpful features. Like independent speaker controls and eq. Time delays, feedback suppression on mics, compressors. Etc. Stuff you would find in more of a touring style event

Is it wrong to use QSC Subs and JBL Tops? Cause I’ve heard and felt QSC KW181 and hooooly shit. They rock your shit. Is there any JBL subs similar to the QSC 181’s? Cause that sub nearly gave me a heart attack. I’m thinking about buying a top and a sub and just financing them for 48 months. But idk what I wanna do yet
@DJRickWeb

JBL prx 818p is the exact same level. The JBL will sound deeper where as the qsc will sound punchy. QSC is honestly very dated. It's been around for 9 years now. JBL is only 2 years old and has a really advanced dsp system and better efficiency (less power draw from the outlet)

I agree, practice. It is harder to get amped when its just you, practicing compared to the energy a crowd feeds you. Remember, they are looking to be led. Start simple with "get your hands up" or "put your hands up". Show them to wave them side to side. They will follow you "somebody, anybody, EVERYBODY SCREAM!!" Or " ladies, let me hear you!!" Just make sure you have a popular song going at the time, this way they are already into the groove. I was in a Buffalo Wild Wings watching Mich vs Mich St and in a break due to weather at the game, the place was a bit quiet so I started yelling GO GREEN ( state chant) and the crowd ( Mich St fans) yelled back GO WHITE. I did this 4 times. People are looking to unleash their party self. Give them the reason. Peace.

DJ Rick Web You should go check out the Obsidian lighting console website and check the M-Touch! It’s a killer console at a great price and it gives you a surface to program off of! The M-Touch will also give you ease of programming with your lights without it having to be time consuming. Once you learn the Onyx lighting software for the M-Touch it will be a second nature to you! I really think it would be a great console and would fit what you do event wise really well! The Onys series of consoles are extremely reliable products! I personally have 2 M-Touches in my inventory and I’m gonna add to my inventory from Onyx. The MX2 console so I have a all in one package console and don’t have a laptop.

Anyone who knows anything about sound realizes that your "sound check" portion was smoke and mirrors. A real "sound check" aligns the phasing of your top cabinets and then you align the phasing of the subs. That is done AFTER you EQ the system for the room. No where in any video do you do that. And Lord knows, with the bullshit videos you put up (cable washing and the misinformation HOSA cable video), that if you did a real sound check and you REALLY used the driverack properly, you would put that up. No - do not come back with "I have presets that I use" because that is garbage. How did you arrive at those presets for EVERY venue? If that were possible, you'd be the smartest sound guy on the planet. The same set up in different venues requires different EQ. The room has its own characteristics - not just the equipment. Turning your rig on, using fancy phrases like "I use 0db" and then "I set the cabinets to the limit so I never go above the limit" may impress the uneducated subscribers, but to those of us with 1/2 a clue, you sir, know nothing. Yes, your driverack has a compressor, but until ALL levels are set properly (No 0db is not it - AND YOU DO NOT ADDRESS THE COMPRESSOR - YOU AVOIDED IT). And this coming from a guy who tells people that you do not need subs. I hate to keep busting your balls, but you are nothing more than a young man with expensive stuff. Other than their comedic value, your "technical" videos have no worth. Now if you're into smoke and mirrors, kids jumping around, basic beat mixing, and screaming into a mic that you cannot understand, then your videos are awesome - keep up the great work!
@DJRickWeb
@DJRickWeb 5 жыл бұрын
Just because I dont talk about it in the video doesnt mean I dont do it. Your I dont do phase aligning bs is incorrect. I followed 2 different concert sound engineers for 3 years and have learned the steps to "sound check" tune a rig properly. Phase aligning, compressors limiters and EQ are all done for each room. There are no presets. My simple explanation on gain structure was ment for people that dont have a driverack. And still out of all this your just a person with a key board, If you wanna walk shit send in some stuff that proofs you have any knowledge to back your bs. I dont doubt you do. Just your driving to talk shit on someone actually took the time to learn sound and not just plug in speakers and red line like 80 percent the DJs out there. Thanks man
@DJRickWeb
@DJRickWeb 5 жыл бұрын
Also you got to realize I know who watches my videos. Un like you, 90 percent of the people are beginners or basic DJs that dont even know what the frequency rang is. If I dive head first into polarities, crossovers, phase cancelation, phase alignment, ringing out monitors, compressors, limiters, eq, etc they be lost super quick. Which is why I dumb it down to simple gain structure. Start with the basics. I am making videos detailed audio videos in the future but they will take time to make them thuro and understandable.

I suggest you read this through sir. Before I proceed: I am stupid. I am a total fucking moron. As compared to many others. I was simply pointing out that your "sound check" was a waste of bandwidth. PSYCH-101: When a person gets defensive and they attempt to bolster their position by trying to lessen another's position, that is narcissism. That is also an elementary debate tactic. "DJ Rick Webb" - I have ZERO to prove to you. Not a goal of mine to prove myself to you. I e-mailed you and offered help for FREE. You would have had ALL the proof you need. Instead - You blew me off. All I want(ed) to do was help....... Moving ahead. What I am talking about is not VOODOO. LMAO What I was/am saying is Sound-101 But you held up a db meter like that means something. That too is smoke and mirrors. How about a Spectrum Analyzer? Lots of videos out there about EQ'ing for the room Lots of videos out there about white noise Lots of videos out there about aligning cabinets (not physically as you so eloquently wrote in one of your previous videos - LMAO) What I speak about, money cannot buy - experience. I have experience and you have money. Videos may give you credibility to the uneducated, but it is not a substitute for experience. You think that a person has to have a KZbin channel to know what they saying? ***NEWS FLASH*** - there was life before the internet. I have been doing this for 38 years, ran sound for national acts, 1248 weddings, and I am a moron. YOU, the master himself "DJ Rick Webb" in OTHER videos use the phrase "I have presets that I use on the driverack". You post videos of EVERYTHING. Common Sense. Had you done -1- sound check, you'd have a video. You are too big a narcissist not to have. I have FAR better things to do with my life than to exchange banter with you on the internet. I will never be on your channel again. I have enjoyed your professionalism.
@DJRickWeb
@DJRickWeb 5 жыл бұрын
You have been very professional yourself if you wanna go that route just saying. And no I dont have a video using my rta mic EQ the room etc. Because no one wants to watch that bs. I havent been in the game as long as you correct. But I have still got 6 years to my name. Training along side sound techs. Doing installs in many different churches, auditoriums, etc. It comes off very offensive to me when someone wants to be little a person like myself that dedicated his time to learning this stuff. Your very professional saying "busting my balls" on every little tiny thing. What you want me to explain in my videos would take hours. A sound check isnt a quick 5 minutes like my videos show. No it takes at least an hour to do it properly. Which is what actually happens. Again if you dont know someone personally, know what they learned, what they actually do. Dont assume and be-little them behind a keyboard. You just come off as unprofessional. No I did not accept your phone call invite because I dont know you. I am not going to call up anyone that ever messages me on the internet that's just asking for trouble whether it's good intentions or not. Lastly I did not call you an idiot. I did say that I didnt doubt that you are knowledgeable. I was just saying you cant trust people online it's the 21st century. And if you cant trust them on face value you need other evidence to back who they are. Me I have social media, KZbin you can see who I am. Again thanks for your very professional original statement and response.
