I think on a normal club night, only the headliner should have an intro. I work at a nightclub running visuals for many artists (including for you before, Luke!), and it is very common to have a dark opening. Rarely do we see a headliner mix into the opener's set. If you're already doing a dark opening, why not a small intro? That said, I think excessive intros are annoying, and as you said, take away from the dancing. Additionally, in a festival setting, IMO only the last couple artists of the night should use special intros. Just my $0.02

I think intros are important. Don't start your set with just a kick drum. Of course, in smaller clubs you don't need anything epic. Just a simple riser. But on festival, go crazyyy, brother. Festival is all about the experience. I paid top dollar to get to the festival, so I want you to entertain me. Don't start with just kick.
@chionaify

I personally love "intros" where just kickdrums play and the song slowly gets complex. Especially in genres like Techno its epic!! It just gets me in the mood of dancing other than this "in your face" intros that a lot of Big Room DJs use.

lmao @ starting a set with a kick drum. That's why I can't take techno djs seriously
@thestever
@thestever 7 жыл бұрын
Totally agree with this. For a lot of DJs the kick drum is gonna be going steadily the entire time, so the intro is your one chance to do something a little different. Plus it makes it more badass when the kick actually comes in. I see it as pretty unimaginative when DJs just hit play and let 32 bars of a kick drum go. Of course this doesn't apply if you're mixing into someone else, but even then, I'd prefer to mix into them but pick a song that has a good breakdown in it and use that as an opportunity for a quick "hey guys i'm ___" intro.

Hey Luke, hope you'll see this comment, I have to say that: in the past years I've always voted for you in the DJ Mag top 100 djs but never for the n°1 spot and I regret it, I have always tought about you as a top skilled DJ and great producer but after I've started looking at your vlogs I understood that you're the realest DJ out there, an amazing humble man, extremely talented. This year you're my number one and I'll vote for you, I already know that you're not particularly interested about you're position in the list, but as a great fan I can nothing less but voting for you, not after I saw all the hard work and passion you put in everything. I think 1, maybe 2 minute intros are great if a DJ has a specific style that people recognize, for example the intro Avicii did at ultra 2016 was really something special and it made sense because it was the melody of one of his new tracks "Without You", it was like a little teaser of what's coming

really cool video Luke! I personally have intros in almost all of my sets when I feel like i need to introduce me and need to prepare the crowd that a Scratch & performance DJ is now coming up. So I Scratch a Siren Sound or something like that, drop a vocal shot and start with the first track. But if I play a club where I already notice that they not too much focused on the DJ, mainly commercial clubs, i just mix in, play 4-5 tracks and make my first routine then to show what I can do. Most important thing is to not kill the vibe in the room, that's why I come to the club always an hour earlier before my set time. keep up the great work dude!

Hey laid-back Luke, tanks for the nice vlog, big fan of yours like that your doing the blogs. Could you do a Vlog about the role of the warm up dj. last Saturday i was working on a techno festival in Zaandam dockyard. after setting al the stuff up i was checking the warm up dj preform. the room was still pretty empty and instead of playing some tech house they where playing more abstract kind of sounds. it was not really dance music but more like a building up energizing kind of music. starting slow and going faster the as the room was filling up. this really sooted the setting and kept me interesting because it kept my atantion. it felt like i was cueing up for a attraction in a amusement park and i was really interested /hyped in what the artist was going to bring up next. some times warm up dj play way to hard and to loud and start by playing "big tunes" in the first hours while there is almost no one to watch them perform. could you do a blog about the warm up dj and how difficult it could be to be a good warm up dj. could you tell us about your experiences warming up [of courseway back]. kind regards Roy Renero

I think that intros are best played at festivals where there needs to be a clear transition from where one DJ set ends and another begins. In smaller shows, I dont think that intros are necessary and the aim should be on keeping people dancing without a break in the music.

Hey Luke! I am a Club and mobile DJ which have some interesting differences. I never use an intro at the club. I commonly don't use one for my mobile DJ events because at a wedding the bride and groom are the main event not the DJ! But when it come to middle and high school dances I use an intro to get everyone on the dance floor, in these cases I use an interactive track which has a dance or a call and response then I lead the crowd through it.

Nicky Romero was right after you but I couldn't even tell till about 10 mins into it LOL. super clean transition.

Been in the crowd for some pretty unique intro's. Axwell used to produce intro's which would incorporate the name of the city in which he was playing which would build some tension and energy and you've had some great Super You & Me intros as well! That being said, I am more partial to when DJs simply open with a different record each time they play; this makes the start of the set less predictable and more exciting to see what they choose!

As a nightclub Lighting Designer the intro is a moment to reset, do a quick check with the new dj if everything is alright and see if they have any songs in which they want me to do something special (mainly co2 or loads of beams for some epic pictures). I'm also the main technical guy if anything goes wrong with the media players or other devices so introducing myself often means the dj will more quickly step away from the decks to let me fix the problem.

I fell that in a club, the intro can happen, but it has to be short. Because it's a party and honestly it about dancing. Delivering a dope experience for those on the dance floor is my first priority. As far as festivals, I feel that intros can happen, but I think they can get very long and drawn out. Sometimes if you watch the live steams of these festivals, you can watch the excitement of the crowd leave very quickly because the intro is so long and they are really ready to get to the dancing, singing & jumping. Just my opinion though...Great Vlog Luke. I'll see you the next time you come to Create in LA! 😎🚀🔥

Sometimes I feel like an intro is warranted but I also think you hit the nail on the head with the ego show as I've witnesssed it first hand. Especially in vegas where it's the djs name in letters behind them while the screen already has their content playing and then an intro on top of that. I mean c'mon... To each their own. I'd like to know what you think about djs using emcees? I know you're not a big fan of the mic but I've noticed more djs adding this element to their shows recently. Thoughts?

Hey Luke! For me its different, I think a intro can be good for big festivals, to suit the theme of the festival, but in a club it can get pretty boring I think. In a club you want the music to flow constantly and a Dj Intro will ruin that flow. And if a Dj decides to use a intro it should be 0:30 seconds or less, and not longer than that, in my experience it really irritates me and takes away my exitement if a intro is too long, and like you already said a intro sounds really ego ^^ I myself would use a intro tho, but not too much and not a long one, cause I dont want to sound like Im a god haha! Btw I love watching the vlogs! They are really entertaining and I learn a lot of your tips and opinions! I will defenitly send one of my demo''s to your demo submission soon! I agree with you. And considering your level of DJ skills no other DJ should have a long intro ,-) Especially if it takes too long and influences the mood in a negative way. If you're far away from the stage it is nice to know who's playing though. But there are other ways to achieve that. Like a cool background where people can see your logo. Or a well timed name drop inside the mix. LAID ! BACK ! LUKE.....BANG.....and then the drop from your own 'Paradise' .))))

I sometimes use short intros for my bigger shows or my mixtapes to kind of catch peoples attention. I usually play well known older songs and transform them into a build up for my first track. At the moment i am using the choir sample from Gangsta's Paradise by Coolio with the hook vocals on top. After that i usually loop the last bit of the vocals and pitch it up untill the drop comes.

I totally agree with what you're saying Luke and have the same thoughts sometimes, but on the other side I do think it is important for the crowd to know who is playing and an intro is good for that. People will go nutts if they hear that typical sound of their favorite DJ, so that's a good tool to use. Just not too long...

Just like choosing the right song at the right time, A DJ should know when a intro is good and will improve the quality of a show. I think its great to use intros under these situations. 1) You produced a fire track and cant wait to release it/use it for your own unique intro, 2) If you are the headliner, 3) If the audience is there to see YOU, 4) Festivals(SHOWS-MAN-SHIP!).

1) If you can mix into the previous DJ - no intro 2) If you need to drastically change style and introduce the crowd to something new - do a little 1-2min ambient intro with a rhythm section buildup 3) If you have no time to properly set up and can only press play on one deck - intro from an acapella 4) If you have a rad way to drop right into the action - no intro, do the rad thing! 5) If you didn't prepare an intro, there is no intro for you, you have no rad drop, and you have no good acapella to intro from - start the track from beat 1 stacked with a filter and echo/reverb effect, slowly reduce FX and keep the bass cut off until the drop on the 1:00min mark. You can even just freestyle some samples and/or scratches into the stacked FX, but remember to build up the energy within 1 minute and then just drop it nicely

In my opinion as DJ and Producer an Intro is something Special which also creates emotions. It's not just the Break & Drop thing you play the hour after the Intro. It's kind of magical and combines different intense sounds you usually hear in Movie Soundtracks. If I see a famous DJ going on a Festival stage without an Intro I am somehow a little bit disappointed, because this is your very own Introduction of yourself to the music lovers industry of which you should be proud of. It's also a symbol for passion and commitment into your work. In a Club it depends if you are the ONLY Headliner this evening or you play along other great DJ's: 1. As single Headliner for this Event you should use an Intro to let the crowd feel that you are the Headliner (Simple Marketing Relevance), so they will remember you. 2. If you play along other great or famous DJ's this evening just take over and mix. Then nobody wants to hear your fcking Intro because they already know they came to party with amazing DJ's and they just want to dance. RESULT: Festivals YES, Clubs DEPENDS.

The intro's are extremely important. It gives the crowd time to relax for a minute, grab a drink and get ready to start jumping all over again! Not only that, every DJ has a different way of entering the stage so sometimes only by hearing the intro you can know which DJ is on next. I'm talking about festivals but I agree that it does not make sense to lube the crowd up for 3 minutes straight in a club enviornment where 60-90% of the crowd is just there to drink and hang out with people, not only to listen to the DJ. A great example of an intro would be Malaa with his original Illicit Intro that he had on Ultra 2017.

intros create a perfect atmosphere to be ready for a top dj or a dj wich is the main event on a festival, when i saw hardwell playing last year in spain and the intro come out i started crying like a baby because hardwell introduced me into the world of electronic music with his UMF 2013 video set ( i couldnt go to a linkin park concert wich was my favorite band and i thought it would be the same with hardwell), then when i started to hear the hardwell´s intro i realised that I was going to fulfill my dream

Its a blend of sometimes/maybe. I think its all about the atmosphere of the event. If an intro makes sense to the event, the theme, etc. -- ala Sensation - then go for for it. That said, when its in a club or an event where it doesn't flow well, leave it at the hotel or at home. There's been times I've used an intro to set a mood - not specific for me, but a riser or effects laden track to switch the mood up from what's going on. I think ultimately its about flow over all else. If you're doing it to say hello at every city, I get the sense there's too much ego going on. If it flows though, and it keeps the crowd motivated on the dance floor our spellbound to the night's construct and theme why not? Joachim actually did this years ago at Exchange LA with Space Invaders 3D. The intro brought the crowd into the night. He didn't do it for the ego, but for the experience.

Intro's suck at a club. But I think it's perfect for a festival. It gives you that feeling that something big is going to happen. I always get goosebumps when the lights go out and you hear that epic orchestra version of a song.

DJ Intro's are cool for special acts or festivals where you've got the right light. this can make it very epic. But I think when the DJ is special the people are already excited anyway. So, I remember a LBL Set at Amnesia where he just start with the beats of "That's My Jam" - but for me it was such a big opener!

Ulysse M That's actually what I'm trying to say in a way Intros can make a good set stand out from the rest It gives that sense of originality

I actually had this discussion with you on Twitter a while ago. I Think that basically in festivals and some specific parties like ssnsation or the super You&Me example you gave it makes sense. Other than that, in clubs, there is no need to it and it kinda is overkill

Depends on the length for me. Alan Walker's intro to his concert is about a minute, but it leads straight into Blazar's remix of his song Faded, which is such an awesome and upbeat track, that it makes it all worth it!

I think that for those shows like the ones we have here in Athens were there is only one big name in the Lineup and the rest are local then it is really cool to have a Intro. I remember when i went to Hardwell and he had this Huge intro and i was going crazy from excitement . Of course in Athens we don't have many big names coming here throughout the year and when somebody is announced we all we wait and tick day by day the day on the calendar till the show. However if there is a party of many DJs on the same level and they play a intro it annoys me kinda. I Hope that you will book a Show in Athens some point soon , i can't wait to listen to a real Dj and not a DJ who DJs Because of their Producing.

At clubs i wouldn't prefer it! But if a dj has a intro at a festival it can sometimes be great. Often it adds suspension and at least I get goosebumps and gets excited for what's to come!
